5/21 MORNING UPDATE: Hyden's Good, Bad, and Ugly for Bellator 120; Cormier not thrilled about Henderson booking due to respect and admiration; Caceres on wanting Urijah Faber bout
![]() |
WEDNESDAY 5/21 MORNING UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what hit the site this morning:
-Frank Hyden's weekly piece hit the site this morning, as he broke down the Good, Bad, and Ugly out of last weekend's Bellator 120 event. One of the biggest issues Frank had was with the timing on the card, which was absolutely god-awful. It was kind of par for the course for Bellator, but exposed further on pay-per-view. Excerpt: “It was ridiculous to see Bellator wasting time with empty cage shots and extended interviews that were out of place. You can't have this on a pay-per-view, where you're asking people to pay money for the show. This is just so horribly bad in so many ways. It makes Bellator look low-rent, like they have no idea how to time a show properly.” Get the full rundown in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-Daniel Cormier said this week that he'd have rather not fought Dan Henderson at UFC 173 because of the level of respect and admiration he has for his fellow former wrestler. However, he thinks the fight will ultimately bring the best out of him on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Get more of his thoughts with commentary on the situation in the main listing now.
-Alex “Bruce Leroy” Caceres made a gutsy call in requesting a fight with Urijah Faber this summer, as the UFC is obliging him with that booking at UFC 175. However, as Caceres says, it's exactly the type of fights he should want, because if he's “any type of fighter,” he should want to fight the best. I give him a ton of credit for the move, though I don't know that I see it working out for him. Catch more of Caceres' comments with further analysis in the main listing.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

5/20 AFTERNOON UPDATE: Roundtable on who Eddie Alvarez should fight next; Faber on tensions with Ludwig; Yahya out of Bedford fight; UFC 173 contests; new episode of "UFC Embedded"
![]() |
TUESDAY 5/20 AFTERNOON UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what hit the site this afternoon:
-Our new roundtable this afternoon takes a look at which fight Eddie Alvarez should take to close out his Bellator run, given he's now got an option between the contractually obligated bout with Michael Chandler, or a fight with new Interim Champion Will Brooks. There seems to be an agreement that a fight with Brooks might be the smarter route, and it depends on what he decides is best for him. Excerpt from Rich Hansen: “If I were in Bjorn Rebney's position, I'd release Alvarez from his contract today and let him sign wherever he wanted to sign, unimpeded, effective immediately, with the only condition being a full gag order. The damage Alvarez would do to Bellator's last shreds of credibility would be huge were he to defeat Brooks, or to a lesser extent Chandler. Just not worth it. Clearly Rebney wants to stick it to Alvarez, but barring that, he should be satisfied with the status quo and a gag order that keeps Alvarez from disparaging Bellator for the next few years.” Get the full roundtable in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-Urijah Faber discussed some tension with the exiting Duane Ludwig, and why it wasn't working for them at Team Alpha Male entirely. He said there were some things they didn't see eye to eye on from the business end of things, but he gave Ludwig credit for his coaching skills. See his full quote with some other analysis in the main listing now.
-An injury to Rani Yahya has brought a change to next month's UFC Fight Night 44 card in San Antonio, Texas, as Cody Gibson is in against Johnny Bedford. Get info on the new fight booking in the main listing.
-Dan Moore's got information up now for the UFC 173 prediction and betting contests, so head to the main listing now to see how you can take part in the games.
-Finally, the second episode of “UFC Embedded” is now online, taking a behind the scenes look at Daniel Cormier, Dan Henderson, and Dana White in advance of Saturday's UFC 173 event.

TORCH APP TODAY - 5/9 NIGHT UPDATE: Penick's UFC Fight Night 40 preview; Bellator 119 report; pay-per-view buy estimates for UFC 172
![]() |
FRIDAY 5/9 NIGHTTIME UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's a rundown of the news that hit the main listing this morning:
-My UFC Fight Night 40 preview hit the main listing tonight, with my quick thoughts on the main card fights, along with my picks on the entire card. Excerpt: “While Erick Silva hits really hard, I honestly think he's in a lot of trouble if he gets into a toe to toe firefight with Brown. While Brown isn't the most technical striker, he has a knack for finding his target, and he's damn near impossible to knock out. However, the glaring weakness in his game has been submission defense, and if Silva can work him to the ground - which in itself is not a guarantee anymore with Brown working on his takedown defense - he has a serious edge there. Unfortunately for the young Brazilian, he seems far too eager to get into those firefights, and I think it costs him here tomorrow. Brown via TKO in the first round.

-Rich Hansen's Bellator 119 report is up on the main listing now, with a round by round rundown of what may have been Bellator's worst televised event to date. Read up in the entertaining report to see why at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-We got pay-per-view buy estimates this week for UFC 172, as it was reported that the show – headlined by the Jon Jones-Glover Teixeira bout - drew 350,000 buys. That's right in line with Ronda Rousey's last fight, the UFC's first four events of 2014 are well below pace from the first four of 2014, and the UFC's best pay-per-view of the year is well below the third best boxing pay-per-view, removing the Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao outliers. More on that with analysis in the main listing.

Phil Davis goes full third person, blasts Jon Jones
Dana White recently bashed Phil Davis for supposedly not wanting to be a champion bad enough. How did White know that Davis didn't want to reach the top?
Well, not for lack of any effort or apparent improvement in his fights. Rather, White dismissed Davis simply because he said the former national champion collegiate wrestler doesn't talk enough trash.
"[Phil Davis is] one of the best light heavyweights in the world, but he doesn’t come off to me like…dude, I got guys breathing down my [expletive] neck wanting fights. I want this fight, I want a title fight, I want this I want that," White said.
"Phil Davis is kind of like, eh. I’ll hang out around No. 4 here and meh. He’s not that guy that comes across like I [expletive] want it. Like I want to be the champ, I want to be the best in the world. He’s sort of, eh."
Well, Davis corrected that problem this week during the UFC 172 media call. Davis fights Anthony Johnson in the co-main event this Saturday on pay per view and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defends his belt against Glover Teixeira in the main event.
Davis took aim at Jones, interrupting him often and criticizing the champ during the call. Before he did, however, Davis replied to White's strange criticism. We knew something was about to go down when Davis began referring himself in the third person.
"That’s not necessarily Phil. It’s really just a miscommunication. So I’m just going to make sure I’m going to do what I’ve got to do Saturday, then I’ll call out whoever the champion is after Saturday night, simple as that," Davis said.
Of course, Phil didn't wait until Saturday to unload on the champ. Take, for example, his description of Jones' controversial last win against Davis' training partner Alexander Gustafsson.
"Here’s what happened. Jon Jones came out doing his regular deal and Alex - because Alex and I, we train together and we went over some things to do - I said, listen man, what you really need to do is you need to strong arm him like an American and hit him with a backhand pimp slap. I’m telling you right now, Alexander threw seven different kinds of smoke at this dude, Jon Jones didn’t know up from down when he was fighting Alex. He didn’t know what hit him. He didn’t know why he hit him, why he was hitting so hard.
"I honestly still don’t really understand really how [Alex] lost, but I will say this: Jon Jones came back the last two rounds, fourth and fifth rounds, came back like a champion. Did he do enough to win? Absolutely not," Davis said.
"But, I’m going to tell you this, seven different kinds of smoke. Jon Jones was one fire, seven different kinds of smoke he had."
You can listen to all of Davis' verbal explosion on the full call audio below. For his part, Jones tried to take the above-the-fray approach.
"I think if anything Phil’s embarrassing himself with all the antics," the champ said.
"But it’s what he decided to do today. You know, I’m a champion. I’m a champion, and I fight the top dogs and my whole career has been in the fast lane. I am not going to sit here and belittle myself by entertaining Phil. At first I thought it was funny, but it’s just silly. And I’m fighting Glover, and he’s fighting Anthony Johnson. I really need to stay focused on Glover, and Glover’s a great challenge to me.
"I just think when you talk like that, and you be so goofy, it puts a lot of pressure on you. I mean, what if he goes out there and gets caught with one of those high kicks from Anthony Johnson and gets knocked out? It’s going to be really embarrassing to talk so much trash to me and then get knocked out by Anthony Johnson. So I’m going to keep my mouth shut and stay focused for what I’m here for, and that’s Glover."

Ricardo Lamas takes lessons with him into next fight
The UFC announced yesterday that former featherweight title challenger Ricardo Lamas will jump back into the Octagon against Hacran Dias on the June 28 UFC Fight night card in San Antonio. The fight will be Lamas’ first since losing a decision to champion Jose Aldo at UFC 169 last February.
That bout saw Lamas take Aldo’s big shots and keep coming forward, ultimately ending the fight with momentum, but also with time having run out on his championship hopes, at least for the time being. The Chicago-area native kept his normal post-fight routine after the loss to Aldo and was back in the gym just a couple days afterwards.
“I was back in the gym the Tuesday after the fight,” Lamas tells Cagewriter.
“Basically, there was no time off. I got back in there – which is what I normally do, regardless of whether I win or lose.”
Lamas was frustrated with his performance against Aldo, and wanted to get right back into the cage and the featherweight mix – which has led to his showdown with Dias in June.
“We asked for a couple guys that the UFC just straight out said ‘no’ to. They said they wanted to match me with someone who is on the same path. I don’t know what that means. Dias actually wasn’t on my radar before that but he was the only guy available,” Lamas admits.
“I didn’t want to wait around until the end of summer for ‘Korean Zombie,’ or someone like that so I just decided to get in there as soon as possible because I also want to try and get on that Mexico card in November.”
Lamas feels that he fought to cautiously against Aldo and is eager to never make that mistake again. “I didn’t fight like myself,” he says.
“I was very tentative…I think I overanalyzed things a bit. I also think I expected him to come out more aggressively in the beginning so when he didn’t, I thought too much. I think it was a combination of all those things.”
Frustrations aside, Lamas says that the positive is that he learned a lot in his five round battle for the title with Aldo. “I don’t look at a loss as a loss,” he says.
“I look at it as a learning experience. Basically, I learned not to fight like that ever again.”

TUESDAY 5/13 MORNING UPDATE
-In addition to breaking down his concussion symptoms on Monday, Eddie Alvarez also gave some reaction to Michael Chandler, who said he should be asking himself whether or not he wants to continue fighting after pulling out with this issue. Alvarez said Chandler's just angry because he's now fighting for a “s****y belt” with no meaning. Sounds accurate. Full comment and analysis in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-UFC President Dana White heaped praise on UFC Champ Anthony Pettis over the weekend, and thinks he'll be the UFC's next breakout star. I think it's very possible if he can stay healthy, and it will start with the Gilbert Melendez fight which is unfortunately arbitrarily delayed due to TUF 20. See White's comment with further thoughts in the main listing.
-With Will Brooks tapped to fight Michael Chandler at Bellator 120 on Saturday, Nate Jolly was left without an opponent. Bellator announced this morning that Marcin Held is stepping in for that fight now in catchweight on the Spike TV prelims. More information in the main listing now.
-If our readers are any indication of Bellator's pay-per-view audience this weekend, it might not be good. We asked readers in our morning poll if they'd be watching Saturday's pay-per-view card, and 73% said no, they would not pay for that event.

TORCH APP TODAY - 5/15 MORNING UPDATE: Rampage thinks King Mo bout worth price of Bellator PPV alone; Belfort not concerned about licensing process going forward; Pettis responds to Aldo; Chandler-Brooks poll results
![]() |
THURSDAY 5/15 MORNING UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site this morning:
-Rampage Jackson fights on Saturday night in the new main event for Bellator's first pay-per-view offering, and he thinks his fight with “King Mo” Lawal is worth the pay-per-view price itself. I think it would have been two or three years ago certainly, but no one's paid for a Rampage fight on pay-per-view in over two years, and Lawal's lost a lot of luster in his time with Bellator. See Rampage's quote with more analysis in the main listing in your phone or tablet browser.
-Vitor Belfort says he's going to be contacting the various state athletic commissions to work on getting licensed so he can fight wherever the UFC runs, and he doesn't seem concerned about the process. His wife/manager is also trying to shut down any further comment or conversation about his randomly administered drug test in February, but that will have to come into play when he applies for a license in Nevada. There's a lot more yet to come on this front, but get Belfort's comments with further analysis in the main listing now.
-Anthony Pettis has heard Jose Aldo's comments time and again that he's ducking the Featherweight Champ, and he warns him that everyone who has said that about him has eventually gotten finished in the first round. That's a matchup which simply has to happen sometime in the future. Catch Pettis' quote, with some thoughts on when it could finally go down, in the main listing.
-In our morning poll, instead of a full prediction on Saturday's Interim Bellator Lightweight Title fight between Michael Chandler and Will Brooks, we asked readers whether they actually thought Brooks could pull it off. Only 6% think he can, while 47% see it as highly unlikely, and the remaining 47% see no way Chandler loses. Get your own vote in now!

Michael Chandler Falls Short, As Will Brooks Wins Bellator Title
Behind effective wrestling, timely striking and numerous rear-naked choke attempts, Will Brooks put an end to the Michael Chandler-Eddie Alvarez trilogy conclusion for now with a decision victory at Bellator 120 Saturday night. Brooks, who agreed to the fight last week after Alvarez suffered a head injury in training, is now the interim champion. He […]
