Anthony Pettis: 'I don't see Gilbert Melendez as a big threat'

Even though UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (17-2)' life has changed since becoming a world title-holder, he knows he won't have the full champ experience until he defends his belt. “I’ve got to get back in there and get a defense under my belt,” he recently told Thomas Gerbasi.

“I definitely got some cool experiences – the Wheaties boxThe Ultimate Fighter show, sponsors like Reebok and some big companies out there, so I definitely experienced that end of it, but the actual fighting side is what I’m going for, so I think once I get some fights under my belt, I’ll get the full experience of being champ.”

Pettis' chance to do just that will come Dec. 6 at UFC 181 when he defends his title against Gilbert Melendez (22-3). And, though he admits that "El Nino" is a "tough" opponent, the champion says he doesn't feel threatened in the least.

“He’s one of those guys that just goes out there and likes to fight," Pettis said.

"You saw him in the Diego Sanchez fight throwing bombs, the Ben Henderson fight went five rounds - but that’s the thing for me, I don’t really see him as a big threat. He doesn’t really knock anybody out, he doesn’t submit anybody; he kinda goes out there and keeps the same pace the whole fight, so I’ve got to break that down and make sure he doesn’t go five rounds with me.”

Pettis may be arrogant to think he'll be the first man to ever stop Melendez. Then again, the whole world was shocked when he submitted Benson Henderson in less than one round, as well.

Pettis knows that he needs to make a splash to remind everyone who he is, after more than a year out of action. In less than two months, Pettis will have his chance to let everyone know that he is still, "Showtime."

“I gotta go out there and remind everybody of who I am,” he said.

Who are you picking to walk away with the UFC lightweight title in Vegas, at UFC 181? Let us know in the comments section!

WSOF champ Jessica Aguilar: 'I want to keep dominating'

Despite defending her World Series of Fighting (WSOF) title on Nov. 15 against a hungry, young challenger who is on an eleven fight win streak and coming off a dominant decision win, Jessica Aguilar (18-4) is confident that she’ll come out on top.  “I’m going to be ready for anything,” she tells Cagewriter.

“I’ve got these last [couple] weeks to go, and I want them to go quick so I can get in there and have fun.”

Aguilar’s confidence against such a big challenge has to come from the fact that she herself is also coming off of a dominant win, and that she hasn’t lost a single fight in over four years.  That, and a great training camp have the champ raring to get her 115 pound title defense against Kalindra Faria (15-3-1) in Tampa

“Oh, for sure. I’ve had a great experience this camp with everything,” she says.

“I’ve got a great team and great coaches, so I can’t complain. Training is the hard part, though. The fight is just like another sparring session. “

That “sparring session” will take place near the American Top Team fighter Aguilar’s home, in Florida, and she admits that home turf will indeed be an advantage for her against her Brazilian opponent. “I’ve traveled half way across the world to fight people, so I’ve been on both sides,” she says.

“But it will definitely be nice for me. I’d say it’s an advantage. I’m here in my home town, closer to my team, and it’s just much easier when you don’t have to travel.”

Aguilar’s next fight is a huge one, and she’s ecstatic to be getting her third one in for the year, after not being as active as she would have liked in the past. However, despite being the number one ranked female 115 pound MMA fighter in the world, all this is happening while a bunch of her peers are getting more attention by fighting in the UFC on a current season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

Aguilar signed with the WSOF shortly before the UFC came calling to the straw weight MMA fighter women of the world, offering them slots on TUF, with the winner becoming the first UFC champ in that weight class.  Aguilar says she is happy to be with the WSOF, because they believed and invested in her.

We ask the underappreciated champ if she perhaps can imagine, in her wildest dreams, a situation where she continues to successfully defend her WSOF belt through her current contract, and then the fans demanded that the UFC sign her and book for a champ vs. champ title unification fight against their title-holder. Of course, we’ve seen this happen before.

Nick Diaz got multiple title shots upon his return to the UFC, after winning titles elsewhere. Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is also about to get his second UFC title fight.

Aguilar can’t deny that fantasy has its appeal, but she insists that she’s focused on her WSOF belt. “You know, I want to reach the highest of all highs,” she begins.

“I want to keep dominating this division, keep winning and improving myself, and getting better. I just want to fight the best. I’m really happy to be fighting in the WSOF. They’ve treated me well and gave me a great opportunity. They believed in me. So, right now, I will do that.

“But, that would be cool. I want to reach the highest levels and want to keep competing against the best. So, that would be awesome, if that came true.”

Holly Holm reportedly is injured, forced to withdraw from Dec. 6 UFC debut

The wait for the UFC debut of long-time women's boxing champion Holly Holm is going to be a bit longer.

Holm, who was slated to make her Octagon debut on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas against Raquel Pennington at UFC 181 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, suffered an undisclosed injury and withdrew from the bout. The injury was first reported by a Portuegese-language MMA site and later confirmed by MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani.

Holm was 32-2-3 as a boxer and was a two-division champion. She is one of the most high-profile boxers ever to transition to mixed martial arts.

She is seen as a potential 2015 challenger to UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

But it now appears that Holm won't make her Octagon debut until 2015.

12/16 NIGHT UPDATE: Class-action lawsuit filed against the UFC with Le, Fitch, and Quarry named as plaintiffs; Moore's "Top Fights To Make After UFC On Fox 13"; Lawler wants return to come in May or later

12/16 NIGHTTIME UPDATE

If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site today:

-The shoe dropped on a class action lawsuit against the UFC today, as it was officially filed in San Jose with Cung Le, Jon Fitch, and Nate Quarry named as the first three plaintiffs. We have several different things up on our mobile site from today's press conference announcing the suit, including the entire complaint itself, the UFC's brief response, a brief overview, and more. Head to MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser to catch up on this afternoon's bombshell press conference.

-Dan Moore plays matchmaker after Saturday's UFC on Fox 13 event today in his latest “Top Fights To Make” column. Excerpt on Rafael dos Anjos: “He will get blown away by the current champion, but he certainly deserves the chance to be in line while Khabib Nurmagomedov is injured. As I mentioned last week, someone needs to step in to keep Pettis active. Dos Anjos is deserving of a shot, and I don't think anyone will dispute his credentials. Dana White has already announced his intentions, so expect to see it by spring next year, unless Nurmagomedov makes a rapid recovery.” Get the full column on the mobile site now.

-Also up on the mobile site tonight, newly crowned Champ Robbie Lawler says he'd like to delay his return until Memorial Day weekend at the earliest if that's possible. However, he says he'll be ready whenever the UFC wants him to be if it has to be earlier than that.

We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

Jose Aldo says UFC fighters deserve better pay

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo's confidence seems to extend outside of the Octagon, and into the business world of MMA. "Scarface" seems just as quick with a criticism of UFC brass (well, at least since president Dana White began to inexplicably bash his dominant and entertaining champ) as he is with one of his nasty leg kicks.

With a title defense this Saturday in his home of Brazil against Chad Mendes (14-1), Aldo recently once more spoke up about what he views as he and other UFC fighters' relatively meager pay to take part in one of the world's most extreme sports. When Brazilian outlet Globo asked Aldo (24-1) - by far, the UFC's longest reigning champion - in a recent interview if he deserved higher pay from the UFC, he said, 'yes,' but also that he isn't the only one.

"Not only me, but also other athletes deserve it," he said.

"We [fighters] give a lot to the company, and I think it is not as valued as it should... Nowadays the company is very large and athletes are very devalued."

Aldo says that, while the UFC pays fighters well when things are going well, the promotion is fickle and not particularly loyal once things go a bit rougher. "If you're fighting well, you are valued by the company," he explained.

"But you're fired if you lose three straight fights."

Fighting for purses makes for an unpredictable, and difficult-to-budget, life. Aldo says that fighters like himself have no problem laying it on the line in the sport they love, but he wishes that the labor got a bigger share of the UFC's all-time high riches.

"We do not earn a monthly salary, so we have to keep fighting," Aldo said.

"We try to always give the maximum in training to get in there and fight, thus raising millions for the company. We also want to have part of these millions."

Do you think that exciting, dominant UFC champs like Aldo should get a higher percentage of the UFC's revenue? Or, do you think the increasing wages, over the years, are about right, given how new the UFC is, and all their expenses?

Let us know in the comments section.

12/23 NIGHT UPDATE: Cruz insists he'll be back strong from latest ACL injury; CM Punk says not trying his hand at UFC would be true failure; Hallman, Vasquez latest to file lawsuit against UFC; UFC Fight Night 59 injury change

12/23 NIGHTTIME UPDATE

If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site today:

-Dominick Cruz refuses to be down about his latest injury setback, and insists he is not only going to return, but he's going to do so as a stronger fighter. He says it's not an “if” but a “when” as far as his return is concerned, and he thinks this one's going to be fairly quick and easy as compared to the last layoff. Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for Cruz's comments with further analysis.

-CM Punk isn't all that concerned with critics of his move to the UFC despite any real fighting experience. 12/24 UPDATE: Roundtable on Rampage's UFC return; Hyden's good, bad, and ugly from UFC Fight Night 58; Dillashaw open to Barao matchup, would prefer Mighty Mouse or Aldo; Machida-Rockhold poll results

Rampage_Jackson_wide_9.jpg

12/24 UPDATE

If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site today:

-In a new roundtable this afternoon, the crew reacted to Rampage Jackson's return to the UFC. Excerpt from Dan Moore: “Rafael Cavalcante, Fabio Maldonado, and Patrick Cummins are all in the top 15, and that tells me all I need to know about the state of the division. He should easily slide back into the top 10, and while he's no threat to the top 7 or 8, he's a got a good fight or two left in him. I'd like to see him fight Jimi Manuwa in his first fight back, that would be entertaining, and one that could go either way.” Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for the full roundtable.

-Frank Hyden today took a look at the good, bad, and ugly from UFC Fight Night 58, with additional thoughts on Rampage Jackson's signing and Dominick Cruz's latest injury. Excerpt on Lyoto Machida vs. C.B. Dollaway: “Machida crushed Dollaway with a hard body kick about a minute in. I was surprised that Machida jumped on it like that, he usually sits back and waits and waits and waits. It was an awesome and brutal finish as he just destroyed Dollaway's insides. You could tell that Dollaway was in a tremendous amount of pain. Great win for Machida, and a fantastic way to end the evening.” Get the full column now on the mobile site.

-T.J. Dillashaw is open to another fight with Renan Barao given the injuries to Dominick Cruz and Raphael Assuncao, but he'd prefer fights with UFC Champions Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Jose Aldo. Catch his comments with further analysis on the likelihood of those fights happening next on the mobile site now.

-In a new poll this morning, we asked readers for their initial thoughts on who would win the potential fight between Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold. 68% believe Machida's the better fighter and will win if they're matched up.

11/15 NIGHT UPDATE: CSAC not pursuing action against Palhares; Jones, Cormier say they'd handle brawl same way if it happened again; Bellator 133 adds two new fights; more

Here's what's on the site tonight:

-The California State Athletic Commission won't be pursuing any further action against Rousimar Palhares after he held another submission a bit too long on Saturday against Jon Fitch at WSOF 16. However, the commission's executive director, Andy Foster, was far from happy with Palhares, and said Palhares' history leaves him open to further scrutiny in these incidences. Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for more of Foster's comments, with further analysis.

-Now that they don't have the Nevada commission asking them about it, both Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier say they'd handle their August brawl the same way were it to happen again. See their comments from Saturday's UFC on Fox 13 broadcast with further thoughts on the mobile site.

-Bellator 133 has added two new fights in Pat Curran vs. Daniel Weichel and Julia Budd vs. Talita Nogueira. More on those fights and fighters on the mobile site.

-Yancy Medeiros and Heather Jo Clark are out up to six months after injuries suffered in victory at The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale on Friday night. Get the full list of suspensions on the mobile site.

-Frank Mir is returning at UFC 184 in February, over a year after his last appearance in the Octagon. He said this past week that he considered retirement after the loss to Alistair Overeem, but didn't want to make any quick decisions during the year. Catch his comments with further analysis on the mobile site.

Bethe Correia says Miesha Tate needs a better mouth piece

UFC bantamweight contender Bethe Correia (9-0) has been doing all she can with her fighting and her trash talk to get the attention her record deserves, and work her way up to a title shot. That's why she believes two-time world title challenger Miesha Tate (15-5) recently singled her out for a future fight.

"I don’t know why she put herself into this story," Correia told media members in Brazil, this week, according to a translation from Guilherme Cruz.

"I think she saw all the attention I was receiving. Tate had two chances against Ronda and lost both twice. She saw that I’m closer to a title shot, so she wants to use that attention."

Even if that is the case, the Brazilian slugger believes that the wrestling-based Tate made a mistake in not just calling Correia out, but in specifically saying she wants a stand-up striking battle with her. "Tate does have good grappling, but she challenged me to a stand-up war," the undefeated fighter explained.

"I hope she doesn’t run away...I won’t run away from the ground because I train a lot of jiu-jitsu and judo, and I believe in my skills, but I love to put my hand on someone’s face, especially when someone challenges me. Tell her to find a better mouthpiece. I hope she comes here to brawl."

Correia said she's happy to take on "Takedown" Tate next. When they do meet, "Pitbull" says she'll beat Tate so convincingly that the whole world will know that she's ready for current champ Ronda Rousey (10-0), next.

"I don’t run from a challenge. The whole world knows who I am," she said.

"Tate’s looking for trouble, and she found it. I will fight her if that’s what the UFC wants, and I will beat her in a way that the whole world knows that Rousey has to be next."

Champ Cain Velasquez says he was willing to fight with an injury at UFC 180

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez said that even before a ruptured MCL forced him to pull out of his planned title defense Saturday in Mexico City against Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC 180, he was struggling with another knee injury.

But he so desperately wanted to continue, he told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, that he was willing to fight with a torn meniscus. It was only when he ruptured his MCL that he pulled out of the bout.

"I felt it was pretty loose. In training, I felt like my body would switch one way but my leg would kind of stay in one direction. So I kind of felt like it wasn't stable. It just sucked, you know what I mean? Going through practice everyday, and just limiting [myself], not really doing the stuff that I could do as far as rolling. I tried to roll, some days I could, some days I couldn't, and I just said, 'Hey, I'm going to just baby it until I get two weeks out, and once I get two weeks out, I'm going to try to do everything. Kick, be on the ground, it doesn't matter, but I'm going to do what I can to make the fight.

"And when I finally realized that I can't do it, it's just not working for me, it just sucked. It felt like something was destined, you know what I mean. Like, this is where I'm destined to be, I'm destined to fight on this card, and it just didn't turn out that way. So it was just kind of devastating to me."

Velasquez hasn't fought since defeating Junior dos Santos at UFC 166 on Oct. 19, 2013, in Houston. He is not sure when he'll be able to return.

He said he believes he'll be fine once he finishes rehabilitation, and said he had no thought of quitting.

"When I train, I train well. I think if something's wrong with me, I just kind of work through it. That's my mentality. If something hurts or something is injured, I think my pain tolerance is pretty high to where, it's pretty bad where I might need surgery, but I'll just kind of work through it. So, you know, again it's part of the sport. We all go through it. I might've gone through it more than most, but I'm going to keep doing it."

Velasquez also seemed to give an edge to Werdum, who will now fight Mark Hunt for the interim title. He'll meet the winner when he's healthy.

"I think Mark Hunt just has that knockout power, and that's pretty much it. I think Werdum, with his length, also if it goes to wrestling, if it goes on the ground, Werdum has it. I think on the feet, with the power that Hunt has, I think he has a good chance of winning it there. But I think that's pretty much it."

Velasquez will be in Mexico City to watch Saturday's bout, but it's a big blow to the UFC to not have him compete. It is one of a series of major injuries that has sidelined the biggest stars during all or most of 2014. In addition to Velasquez, stars such as Anderson Silva, Anthony Pettis, Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendez and Junior dos Santos haven't fought yet in 2014.

Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping bicker on camera

UFC middleweights Luke Rockhold (12-2) and Michael Bisping (25-6) will face off Nov. 8 in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Sydney, and the two rivals sat down with Ultimate Insider host Jon Anik recently to promote the bout (video above). They did a good job.

Hard core fans may remember that Rockhold's beef with Bisping goes back a couple years to when the almost always classless "Count" broke the fighter's gym code of keeping what happens in training, secret, when he insinuated that he badly beat Rockhold up in a sparring session. Rockhold has lobbied for a fight with Bisping to get back at the British star, and will get his wish next month in Australia.

In the above interview with Anik, Bisping mocked Rockhold's sensitivity to his insulting remarks, two years ago. "You're so sensitive about it," Bisping said.

"I made an off-the-cuff remark."

At that point, Rockhold retorted by clarifying, "A tasteless remark."

"My hands were on my knees for two rounds straight and you couldn't do a damn thing in the best shape of your life, as I'm switching my stance," Rockhold continued.

"It's a sparring session. That's all it is. Why did you even talk about it?"

At present, Rockhold is a huge favorite over Bisping. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion has lost only once (to Vitor Belfort) since 2007, whereas Bisping is 3-3 in his last six bouts.

"I will stop Michael Bisping and there's a number of ways it's going to be done," Rockhold concluded.

"I'm not really looking to take him down. Definitely not a submission, that's not punishment enough for this guy."

Check out Bisping's last fight - a nasty TKO win over Cung Le - below, and then let us know if you think he can pull off the upset over Rockhold, in the comments section!

Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site tonight:

-In a new roundtable today, the crew looks at whom Robbie Lawler should face in his first UFC title defense. Excerpt from Rich Hansen: “If Rory MacDonald wins the title, and if Georges St-Pierre is ever going to return to the UFC, and if St-Pierre will never fight MacDonald, and if you understand the concept of making money... then Robbie Lawler's next fight needs to be this March, in Montreal, versus Georges St-Pierre.” Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for the full roundtable.

-In a brand new MMATorch Livecast tonight, Rich Hansen and I were joined by UFC heavyweight Josh Barnett for a half hour interview, and after that we broke down UFC 181 and much more. Head to the mobile site to listen to this week's two hour episode of our weekly podcast.

-Joe Rogan absolutely eviscerated his supposed friend Brendan Schaub on Schaub's own podcast today. The conversation came after Schaub's loss to Travis Browne last weekend, and Rogan did not hold back. Catch some comments from the broadcast, with further analysis on Rogan's approach and overall message on the mobile site now.

-Anderson Silva opened up on his thoughts regarding homosexual competitors in MMA, expressing a refreshing and much needed outlook on why he believes there are many closeted competitors, with many others afraid to speak up.

Champ Rockhold calls Larkin attack 'pretty amateur,' eyes early 2013 for return

Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold today told MMAjunkie.com that he never signed a bout agreement to fight Lorenz Larkin and never intended to fight at the promotion's final event.

When officials announced the Jan. 12 event in early November, Rockhold said he informed them a wrist injury lingered and that he was unable to fight.

That's why he's particularly irritated by a series of verbal attacks from Lorenz Larkin regarding his willingness to compete.
