Extraordinary day: Thiago Silva cut, Anthony Johnson suspended, Wanderlei Silva retires
This must be what it feels like these days to cover the NFL.
Two cases of domestic violence, an athlete holding a gun, allegations of drug use and an unhappy fighter ripping his organization highlighted the news that happened Friday in the UFC.
Iconic light heavyweight Wanderlei Silva, one of the most popular fighters in mixed martial arts history, announced his retirement in a sometimes rambling video he posted on YouTube in which he blasted the UFC for the way it treated fighters and for underpaying them.
Earlier in the day, the company announced in a terse statement it posted on its website that it had indefinitely suspended light heavyweight Anthony Johnson, who is No. 5 in its ratings, after the mother of two of his children obtained a temporary protective order against him. She told police he'd knocked out two of her teeth in 2012.
The UFC noted in its statement it had hired "a third-party law firm" to investigate the allegations against Johnson, which he denies.
Also on Friday, the UFC dropped light heavyweight fighter Thiago Silva (no relation to Wanderlei Silva) after his ex-wife posted a video of him holding a gun while she said he is high on drugs.
Thiago Silva was arrested in February in Florida and charged with two counts of attempted murder, among other charges. Charges were later reduced to two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Thiago Silva had been accused of putting a gun in his ex-wife's mouth.
He barricaded himself in his home and the SWAT team surrounded it. He was tazed by a police officer and was taken into custody without incident.
Charges were later dropped because prosecutors learned his ex-wife had moved out of the country and wasn't cooperating.
Incredibly, Thiago Silva was reinstated on Sept. 5. UFC president Dana White defended the move by saying that Silva had gone through the legal process and had come out "untainted."
But when Silva's wife released a video Friday apparently taken while the couple was still married that showed him holding a gun while she said he was high on drugs, the UFC swiftly released him. His ex-wife, Thaysa Kamiji, told MMA Fighting that she's moved to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates with her new husband, MMA trainer Pablo Popovitch.
The last bombshell dropped late in the day when Wanderlei Silva, who has been battling the Nevada Athletic Commission for avoiding a drug test, announced his retirement in an extraordinary and frequently emotional video.
Wanderlei Silva said he had lost his desire to fight because of the actions of UFC management. He blasted them over their treatment of former bantamweight champion Renan Barao, saying they'd made him fight too often, and didn't allow his body time to recover from fighting and having to cut weight. Wanderlei Silva said the reason Barao couldn't make weight for his rematch with T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 177 on Aug. 30 is because he'd trained almost non-stop for six months.
"He lost the belt and then had to fight the rematch right away," Wanderlei Silva said of Barao on his video, in which he was speaking Portuguese with English subtitles. "After that, his body couldn't handle it and he passed out while cutting weight."
Wanderlei Silva said the UFC tried to force him to fight when he told them he was injured and not prepared. He then blasted company officials for what he said was a lack of respect and for failing to pay fighters fairly.
"I feel that I don't have a dignified stage where the athletes are respected," he said. " ... The few fighters who have a name are forced to fight all year long, because they want to make 50 events a year."
Later he said athletes aren't paid well, "only crumbs."
"They use us to make rivers of money because this event is making a lot of money," Wanderlei Silva said.
He failed to address his drug test issue with the Nevada commission. On May 23, a collector was sent by the commission to his gym to take a sample since he'd attended a news conference that day to promote a planned July 5 fight against Chael Sonnen.
Wanderlei Silva declined to be tested and the Nevada commission viewed it as a failed test. But Silva fought the suspension and his attorney filed a motion to dismiss the complaint. Ross Goodman, Silva’s attorney, contends that the commission doesn't have jurisdiction because he wasn’t licensed at the time.

Todd Duffee will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon later this year, taking on Anthony Hamilton at UFC 181. Officials announced the heavyweight bout for the December 6 event from Las Vegas. UFC's Joe Lauzon on opponent: 'He is always prepared'
UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon may have an experience advantage over his opponent this Friday, Michael Chiesa, but "J-Lau" thinks highly of "The Maverick." Lauzon says that he's better at everything Chiesa is, but knows he's facing a tough test in the tall and rangy Ultimate Fighter winner.
"He is always prepared for his fights," Lauzon tells Cagewriter.
"He doesn't always get credit for his wins but you can tell that he prepares very well. He's also a south paw, long, and has good Jiu Jitsu. He takes advantage of his long arms by using the jab really good. He's also good at taking the back at weird angles."
Lauzon is always confident but even he can't predict exactly how the fight with Chiesa will go. "It's going to be a really exciting fight," he says.
"A lot of the things he's good at, I feel that I'm better at. He uses his boxing to set up his Jiu Jitsu well, and I'm pretty good at that. He has good Jiu Jitsu and I think I have great Jiu Jitsu. I don't quite know how the fight is going to go. I could see us going out there hard and one guy clipping the other one right away. You never know."
Lauzon isn't concerned about his over eight-month lay off since last fighting in December, 2013. The Boston-area fighter says he's had the best training camp of his career.
"I've had a couple other longer lay-offs than this," he says.
"I'm not super crazy about an eight to nine month lay off but based on my sparring, I feel really good about it. Most people like to stay a bit more active but I don't mind taking a little more time than most between camps because I train real hard. I take a lot of chances in training camp and so I get a lot of wear and tear, pulling this and pulling that. So, I didn't mind the time off."
At the end of the day, Lauzon can't wait to get back into the cage after a trying 2014. "He's going to be tough to deal with," he admits.
"But I'm ready to go."

[VIDEO] Ronda Rousey and Gilbert Melendez spar
UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is all healed up from a broken hand and got back to training recently with a Jiu Jitsu sparring session against No. 1 UFC lightweight contender Gilbert Melendez. Check out the video above for a beautiful display of good-natured but speedy grappling between Rousey and Melendez.
Melendez definitely has a size and strength advantage, but Rousey uses her speed and aggressiveness in scrambles to threaten with back control and arm bars. The former Judo Olympian seems able to get into position for an arm bar from anywhere, and it's pretty cool to watch.
Check it out and let us know what other pro-fighter sparring sessions you'd enjoy getting a sneak peek at, if you could.

9/12 MORNING UPDATE: Overeem to get another UFC fight; White doesn't think racism at play with Jon Jones; GSP will get title bout if and when he returns; TUF 20's Torres, Esparza spar over PED accusations; TUF 20 poll results

9/12 MORNING UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site this morning:
-Despite (T)KO losses in three of his last four fights, Alistair Overeem is going to get another fight in the UFC. That's according to UFC President Dana White, who says Overeem remains a top ten heavyweight. Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for further thoughts on Overeem's status in the division.
-White also commented this week on the recent idea posited by Joe Rogan that racism may be behind some of the fan backlash against UFC Champ Jon Jones. White disagrees, and doesn't think that race issues play any part. See his comments, with further thoughts on the situation, on the mobile site now.
-In another subject White touched on this week, Georges St-Pierre's theoretical return will bring him a title fight if he wants it. White said if and when the now former Welterweight Champ decides he wants to come back, he can have any fight he wants from them. More of White's comments on St-Pierre with additional thoughts on the mobile site.
-TUF 20 competitor Tecia Torres has gotten some veiled accusations of PED use thrown her way this week after looking less than herself in Wednesday's debut episode, and she fired back at those suggesting such things, including fellow cast member Carla Esparza. That led to Esparza sending a harsh reply, essentially making further allegations without claiming them as her own. See the commnts from both women with further analysis on the mobile site.
-Speaking of TUF 20, our morning poll today asked readers whether or not they're watching or planning to watch this season given the disappointing debut ratings. Perhaps surprisingly, 55% said they watched Wednesday and won't miss an episode. Now, obviously our reader base is more in line with the more than casual fan, and it seems to be that audience the UFC hasn't grabbed for this season.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

WSOF champ Marlon Moraes adds new team into training
World Series of Fighting (WSOF) bantamweight champ Marlon Moraes is and has always been proud to represent his Renzo Gracie lineage. To prepare for his catchweight (140lbs) bout against Cody Bollinger tomorrow on NBC Sports Network (at 9pm EST), however, the Brazilian added training with a new team into his New York and New Jersey work up North with Gracie, Ricardo Almeida and former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar.
"This is the first camp that I've been going to Florida and ATT (American Top Team) a little bit," Moraes tells Cagewriter.
"It was good there. There are good training partners. I get new training and get to work with different styles and different guys. Then, I get to come back up here North in New Jersey and train with Frankie, and my coaches Mark Henry and Ricardo Almeida. I love working with them. This is the best I've ever been."
Moraes has complete confidence in his preparation and abilities but still thinks highly of his opponent Bollinger. "He's a great fighter," he says.
"He's good everywhere. I've got to be ready for anything. I am. I can't wait."

Mark Hunt ponders 'the end,' and one last title
Few people appear more comfortable with fighting than UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt. The kickboxer looks as calm talking to reporters as he does entering the Octagon on fight night.
He fights with apparent fearless reckless abandon and past defeats have not made him gun-shy. He even turned down a fortune to sit at home and do nothing after the UFC purchased Pride, opting instead to fight for his money.
Given all that, it may be surprising to hear Hunt say that he never imagined that he'd be a fighter. "I feel blessed by God. This is what I'm supposed to be doing in life. I never wanted to be a fighter," Hunt said in a recent and excellent interview with Dave Meltzer.
"This is what God said I'm going to do, and I'm happy with that. The end is the same, if I win, lose or draw."
Hunt may have been feeling particularly philosophical after landing in Tokyo this past Tuesday for his UFC Fight Night headline bout against Roy Nelson on Saturday. Soon after landing, the city was rocked by an earth quake.
Hunt says he's been to Japan over eighty times in his career but an ominous welcome like that could rattle just about anyone. Hunt's view on death is a calm one, and it informs his attitude towards winning and losing in competition.
"We just landed and it was the earthquake, damn," he said.
"When God says it's time for one of us to go, we're done."
It would be a mistake to take Hunt's zen attitude for fatalism, however. Hunt simply recognizes that, despite all efforts, he may lose on fight nights and one day he'll die.
While he's here, however, the "Super Samoan" still has some big goals he wants to accomplish and is willing to work towards. Namely - a UFC world title.
"It's good for me to be doing what I'm doing at my age. I love doing what I'm doing. But when I'm finished, I'm not going to come back. I won't need the money. The only reason I'm still fighting is because I believe I'm still the best fighter in the world," Hunt explained.
"I want to beat Roy on Saturday night, and then I want to fight a top-five guy. Then I want to challenge for the title once, whoever that may be against. That's all I'm interested in. I want one chance for that title shot."

Miesha Tate Interview For UFC Fight Night Japan By The Shoot

Gilbert Melendez on UFC champ Anthony Pettis: 'We ain't friends'
Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis were given shots to promote themselves and their upcoming UFC lightweight title fight while filming season 20 of the MMA reality show competition, The Ultimate Fighter, but "El Nino" says that both men chose to keep a lid on the drama. Fans shouldn't expect any Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate-esque TUF antics between Melendez and the champ.
“I hope people aren’t too disappointed, but there’s not much interaction between us,” Melendez recently told MMA Junkie Radio.
“We’re kind of guys who don’t talk too much [expletive] and like to fight more. I don’t really want to build a relationship with him. I think he feels the same."
According to UFC president Dana White, Melendez and Pettis are set to fight Dec. 6 for Pettis' lightweight strap. While Melendez said he didn't go out of his way to antagonize Pettis, he also didn't make an effort to be polite to him, since they will soon lock up.
“We’ve had a little bit of words, but other than that, we just keep it separate. Because we ain’t friends," Melendez explained.
"I don’t want to like him, and he doesn’t want to like me, and we’re going to want to beat each other up. Ain’t no joke about that. I just don’t high-five and hug people like other people.”
Melendez went on to say that, while he didn't try to get in Pettis' face during TUF 20 taping, his teammate, friend and assistant coach on the show, Nate Diaz, was another matter. “He’s such a cholo, bro,” Melendez said of Diaz.
“He don’t smile one bit. He don’t say 'hi' to nobody. I like having him around. He has a great intimidation factor. He’s all business. He’s always ready to go.
“Most people just give him his space. They don’t want to call his bluff. [Diaz would tell Melendez of fighting Pettis], ‘Whenever you want, Gil, you let me know.’ I’m like, ‘Nah, Nate, it’s cool.'”
Do you think Melendez vs. Pettis will be fireworks in the cage, come fight night, even though they may not have bought into the reality show drama? Let us know in the comments section!

UFC's Cung Le visits, donates to Vietnam orphanage
The days leading up to a fight are of crucial importance to an athlete. It's in these final days that the requisite selfishness of a training camp must reach it's peak so that the competitor has the focus they need to battle on fight night.
UFC middleweight Cung Le has, at least in part, eschewed the usual solitary selfishness just days before he takes on Michael Bisping in Macau in the main event of UFC Fight Night Saturday. As a child, Le and his family fled Saigon and before hitting China to ready for his fight, the San Shou expert stopped in his native Vietnam to visit an orphanage.
Le was so moved by the experience that he says he decided to give most of his sponsorship money for the Bisping fight to the orphanage to help provide for the children there. “I knew how crazy it was, but when I showed up there, it was very emotional,” Le said in a recent MMA Junkie interview.
“[The orphanage only takes kids that were abandoned, and a lot of the kids, they have issues. Whether it’s with nerve damage or with brain swelling. It was something amazing for me to see.
“I spent my day off going to this orphanage that was part of a temple...Basically, instead of taking the money from [my sponsors], I spent the money and bought a ton of rice and toys and candy, and gave the abbot there the rest of the money.”
It's heart-warming to see a fighter think of others in the midst of an important and stressful time for themselves. Check out the video below of an emotional Le talking about his own sudden escape from Vietnam as a child.

Dana White and Nate Diaz meet, discuss business
Dana White and estranged lightweight hold-out Nate Diaz have gotten together and begun to hash things out, recently. According to the UFC president, he and Diaz are on good terms, personally, but are still far apart in terms of what they each think the fighter deserves to be paid.
"I took everybody out for the TUF 20 finale. It was a very, very, very rough night. A lot of damage was done that night. But Nate and I got together that night and talked, and we're going to get together when I get back into the country," White said.
"Nate and I got to spend some quality time together. You know, we were out having fun, we talked business for a little while. We got together in a room, and where he is and where we are, we're not even close...He's just got something in his head and we've got something else in our head."
Do you think White and Diaz are likely to come to terms and have the former title challenger fight again in the UFC? Let us know in the comments section.

9/5 AFTERNOON UPDATE: Oliveira off UFC Fight Night 50 due to illness; Souza-Mousasi predictions roundtable; UFC re-signs T. Silva; Rockhold-Bisping headlines in Australia on UFC Fight Pass

9/5 AFTERNOON UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site this afternoon:
-Charles Oliveira is out of tonight's UFC Fight Night 50 event as he fell ill once again today, forcing doctors not to clear him for the event. More thoughts on his removal on our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-Our new roundtable today features predictions for tonight's Jacare Souza vs. Gegard Mousasi rematch. Excerpt from Dan Moore: “That all means Souza has to consistently take Mousasi down, and I'm not convinced he's going to succeed enough over five-rounds. Mousasi's effective jab, movement, combinations, and kickboxing prowess will provide him with enough defensive weapons to stop the takedowns. However, if it does go to the mat, then Souza takes the advantage. Mousasi is no slouch on the ground and Souza is vastly improved standing so the advantages I mention are fractional.” Full roundtable on the mobile site.
-In an inexplicable move, the UFC has re-signed Thiago Silva after domestic assault charges were dropped this week in Florida. The charges were dropped because the alleged victim, his estranged wife, is believed to have left the country – likely to get as far away from him as possible. The UFC is bringing him back despite a lot of clear evidence of wrong-doing on his part, including severely threatening text messages and his standoff with police. More thoughts on the move on the mobile site.
-In another move that just doesn't make a lot of sense, the Luke Rockhold vs. Michael Bisping fight will happen, but it's going to happen on UFC Fight Pass from Australia on Nov. 8. More thoughts on the specifics regarding that booking on the mobile site.

After all, the grappling promotion has already featured UFC vets like Dean Lister, Chael Sonnen and Josh Barnett (the latter […]

Bellator champ Emanuel Newton: 'I was born to fight'
Emanuel Newton isn't shy about admitting it. After knocking out star Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal with a spinning back fist in their early 2013 bout, he still felt he had something to prove, not just to fans but himself.
That's why, when he won a unanimous decision over Lawal in their rematch, later in the year, "The Hardcore Kid," felt validated.
"That's why I’m glad I won a decision in the rematch," Newton tells Cagewriter.
"Sure, it would have been good to knock him out again, but at the same time, I knew I had to prove something. Not just to the fans, but to myself. I wanted to prove that I could knock him out quick, or go all five rounds, and that either way I'm beating him."
The victories over Lawal were also doubtless extra sweet for Newton because of all of the trash talk from "King Mo." The Bellator light heavyweight champ says that the anger from Lawal barely registered with him, however.
"Honestly, I didn't pay attention to it," he says.
"There was maybe only one time, after we did a call together, where I got off the phone and thought to myself, 'man, Mo is a douche.' (laughs) But other than that, you learn to ignore the stupid stuff. Talk is talk, but once we get in the cage and they close the gate, it's just you, the ref and the other guy, and we're going to fight, no matter what was said."
This Friday, Newton defends his title against Joey Beltran. Beltran is a UFC veteran and tough as nails, but not exactly on a roll.
There's also no personal history or animosity to speak of between he and Newton. So, is it hard for the champ to get motivated for a fight like this?
After all, Newton's recent fights have all been grudge matches or chances at redemption (like his last fight, against Atilla Vegh, where he won a rematch of a 2012 bout he lost). Beltran has won only three out of his last eleven fights.
"No, man," Newton maintains when asked if it's been harder for him to get up for the fight with Beltran.
"Joey’s tough. Also, this camp has been completely and totally different. I realize that in the past I overtrained and burned myself out...now, I train smarter and just do what my body needs to do, not do things for the sake of doing them."
After years of fighting all over, Newton has finally established himself in the upper echelons of MMA. Simply put, the 30 year-old is on a roll. He hasn't lost a fight that he wouldn't go on to avenge since 2009, and has won five straight bouts.
At this point, one has to wonder how he'd do against the likes of UFC light heavyweights. Newton is confident in himself, though isn't concerned with reaching a particular place in the rankings.
"I’m just here to fight," he says.
"As far as the rankings go, people may not know me know but they'll come to know me if I keep on winning. I'll keep getting better. I was born and bred to fight. People can rank me where they want."
