Charles Oliveira confirmed that he did not receive any payment from the UFC for failing to weigh-in and compete recently at UFC Fight Night 50. After missing weight Thursday, a planned bout with Nik Lentz that was set to air on FOX Sports 1, was scrapped the day of the card. Oliveira (18-4) fell ill […]

The UFC's director of public relations, Dave Sholler, was put in a tough spot recently when he hosted a media day that included a stare-down between light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. As most of you know by now, Jones decided to head butt (lightly) Cormier, Cormier responded by shoving Jones, and then all heck broke loose as Jones knocked Sholler down and fired back with punches at Cormier.
The stage fell apart, Jones and Cormier hit the ground, crowds of people tried to break them up and the UFC got a dangerous but potent promotional gift of hype for the now-postponed title bout. Typically, UFC president Dana stands between fighters as they stare each other down at media events and weigh-ins but the boss man wasn't around that particular time and left Sholler in charge.
This week, White spoke up and said that he would have handled things a lot differently, had he been there, simply because he's had so much experience in similar situations."As soon as Jones went up and their bodies touched, I would have separated them," White told UFC.com.
"Sometimes you'll see me put a hand in, or sometimes you'll see me do something else. I would have separated them. It was the head butt - Jones headbutted Cormier - that's what upset him and made him push him back. I would have got my arm in there before that contact was even made. I would have seen the contact coming and I would have stopped it. Then I would have been right in the middle."
White didn't see anything too crazy in the brawl, and understands how things can naturally escalate quickly between men contracted to hurt one another. "One little thing can trigger two guys, who are the baddest dudes on the planet, who are face to face," he explained.
"That's what they do, period. People can try to sugar coat it or try to spin any way that they want, that's the reality. That's who they are, that's what they're paid to do and that's what you show up to watch. These guys, that's who they are to the core. And when you get two guys like that and you don't handle the situation the right way to defuse it, that's what happens. The difference is that Sholler has never been in that position before...These guys are fighters, man, they're ready to go. And that's what makes the weigh-ins so amazing and why I love it so much. Those staredowns, there's nothing [expletive] like it."
Though White said he would have likely seen the trouble coming a little sooner than Sholler, he didn't go so far as to say he would have been able to do much to stop Jones and Cormier, once they started fighting. "Would I have stopped that whole thing from going down, who the [expletive] knows?" he said.
"I wasn't here."

Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen recently pulled back the curtain on his ridiculous but effective pro-wrestling act of the past four or so years, admitting that he intentionally tried to be a villain (or, "heel" in 'wrasslin' parlance), and revealing why he did. "I got hit with a PED charge and a criminal charge in the same month," said Sonnen on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast of his rough 2010 after losing to Anderson Silva a first time.
"The whole 'silly me' defense is a pretty good one. When you go, 'Listen, I didn't know. I didn't know the rules.' That works. That's a good, solid defense. One time. I needed it twice in the same month. So I just knew I was beat. As far as a PR standpoint goes, this is a disaster. Anybody in politics will tell you that when there's a problem you steer into it, so I came out of that mess and I just came out and said, 'Yeah, I'm a gangster. This is the life. This is what gangsters do.'
"People just started going into it. I just kept going with it, too. 'This is nothing. These are just the things I was caught for. You should hear what I got away with.' I started going really hard into it. Yea, it was a lot of fun and it did turn it around."
Sonnen went on to say that he relished the villain role because there was less competition than in the hero role. "For me, I prefer to be the heel," he said.
"I just have always preferred to incite them and make them angry. I had death threats in Brazil, but if you're a heel, this is a major win. What's stronger than that? It's always fun for me. One thing I picked up on was that nobody else wanted that. If you're up there competing for popularity, well, everybody wants to be liked. Everyone wants to be patted on the back. Now you're competing with everybody.
"If you go to the other end of the pool, you can have the water all to yourself. I became the biggest heel in MMA and possibly in sports kind of by just swimming down there and saying, 'Well, I want to be down here.' If I could do it over again, I'd definitely chose the same route. I might have laid it on a bit thicker at times but I would never go back."
Are you glad Sonnen decided to let his fight persona reflect his real-world crimes and offenses? Let us know in the comments section.

Kamal Shalorus (9-3) was born and raised with wrestling all around him. Growing up near the wrestling hot-bed of Azerbaijan, Shalorus had both the intense Iranian and Russian wrestling cultures pushing in on him as a young man.
The wrestling passion of the region became his, and he used it to lift himself up, professionally. He would go on to represent Britain’s wrestling team at the 2004 summer games, and later become a top MMA fighter.
Kamal’s parents had no problem accepting his career as a wrestler, but fighting in a cage with less rules seemed more foreign to them, at first. “Wrestling, they knew, so they were very supportive,” he tells Cagewriter.
“But MMA, well, my mom was a lot more nervous about that (laughs). But now they see what it is and understand it a bit more.”
It took Shalorus some time himself to begin to fully understand MMA. He first got into the sport as a training partner for MMA fighters to better their wrestling, but soon realize that he was good enough to step into a second career as well.
“The transition was definitely challenging, especially the striking, but I enjoyed it and it ultimately came natural to me,” he says.
Indeed, Shalorus would go on to build an excellent record and fight in the WEC and UFC. In short time, the wrestler had gone from a training partner to an elite fighter himself.
Three straight losses in the UFC snapped the 37 year-old’s undefeated streak in MMA, however, and he had to find a new fighting home. He did so in Singapore-based top Asian promotion ONE FC.
Now, Shalorus is on a two-fight win streak and heads into a lightweight title shot against champion Shinya Aoki (35-6) Friday in Dubai at ONEFC 19. Combat sports have taken Kamal all over the world, since he left his home in Iran as a teenager, alone, two decades ago.
This week, it has taken him from his adopted home of Texas all the way to the U.A.E. for perhaps one last chance at gold. Nearing 40, Shalorus is confident in his skills, but eager to capitalize on a title shot.
“Fighting for a title means a lot,” he admits.
“I don’t know how long I’ll be able to do this, if I’m honest. Right now, I feel fantastic, and I go against the young guys and do well, but you never know when you’ll have to stop. We’ll see, later. So, I couldn’t be more motivated or excited for this fight than I am.”
The sense of urgency makes the opportunity against Aoki, a star in Japan and long top-ranked, even more special for Kamal. If the pressure is intense, the wrestler takes solace in the skills he’s been honing since he was a child.
“For sure Aoki has had difficulty against top wrestlers,” he says.
“He uses his Judo well and has great Jiu Jitsu on the ground, but I think I can test him.”

UFC lightweight Bobby Green was set to face Donald Cerrone before the UFC signed Eddie Alvarez and decided to replace the Bellator champ for Green. Turns out, Green would have especially liked to have gotten his hands on "Cowboy" Cerrone.
According to allegations Green made during an interview Monday with MMA Fighting, Cerrone made racist comments about Green, a well as groped and bullied UFC fans at a UFC Expo. "[Cerrone] just said some racist stuff," Green began.
"He said stuff like, random racist stuff like ‘we gotta check him, we gotta check him, you know how black people like to steal.' I'm like ‘what the,' and I'm getting hot in front of thousands of people, all these people are here for the signing and they're going 'ohhhh' and 'ooooh' and 'ahhh.'
"His boy [Isaac] Vallie-Flagg [said] ‘he had a little bit to drink,' he's like ‘let it go,' I'm like ‘man, I'm not tripping' and I'm laughing it off like 'hahaha. It's cool.' But inside, the real dude inside of me, we don't let that kind of [expletive] go, you know? I want to get his ass. But at the same time I'm like 'play it cool, don't make waves.'"
The UFC newcomer decided to lay low despite Cerrone's alleged comments in order to not escalate the situation. Later, during an autograph-signing session, Green says he saw Cerrone grope female fans and bully their partners.
"He was groping every woman in his line to do his signing," Green claimed.
"He's groping these women. They've got husbands, they've got fiancees, they've got boyfriends, I'm like, that's messed up man, just because this guy's a nerd and he can't do anything to you, you're going to do this to him. Girlfriend's cute, Donald Cerrone, picks her up, grabs her ass, starts grabbing on there and stuff and he's like 'I'm Donald Cerrone.' I'm like, 'you're going to piss somebody off, you get the wrong person they're going to get pissed.' He's like, 'what are they going to do to me, I'll knock them out.' I'm like what the? This guy's full of himself."
Green is no longer a UFC rookie, having won four straight bouts in the Octagon and eight straight, overall. So, he feels free to say what he thinks of the Greg Jackson/Mike Winkeljohn fighter, based on his alleged behavior at the UFC Expo.
"I liked the guy, I was a fan of him at the time. So I'm actually excited to meet the guy. I'm cool with him, I shake his hand, you know, and he's just been rude as hell," Green concluded.
"He is just the most obnoxious asshole I've ever met."
