TUESDAY 5/13 MORNING UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's a rundown of the news that hit the main listing this morning:
-In addition to breaking down his concussion symptoms on Monday, Eddie Alvarez also gave some reaction to Michael Chandler, who said he should be asking himself whether or not he wants to continue fighting after pulling out with this issue. Alvarez said Chandler's just angry because he's now fighting for a “s****y belt” with no meaning. Sounds accurate. Full comment and analysis in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-UFC President Dana White heaped praise on UFC Champ Anthony Pettis over the weekend, and thinks he'll be the UFC's next breakout star. I think it's very possible if he can stay healthy, and it will start with the Gilbert Melendez fight which is unfortunately arbitrarily delayed due to TUF 20. See White's comment with further thoughts in the main listing.
-With Will Brooks tapped to fight Michael Chandler at Bellator 120 on Saturday, Nate Jolly was left without an opponent. Bellator announced this morning that Marcin Held is stepping in for that fight now in catchweight on the Spike TV prelims. More information in the main listing now.
-If our readers are any indication of Bellator's pay-per-view audience this weekend, it might not be good. We asked readers in our morning poll if they'd be watching Saturday's pay-per-view card, and 73% said no, they would not pay for that event.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

UFC champ Jon Jones enjoys crowd's favor again
Perhaps it's because he found success so quickly in the UFC, perhaps it's because he's beaten some legendary fan favorites, perhaps it's because he's admittedly a little arrogant while also being young, rich and black. Maybe it's a little bit of all of these things.
But, for whatever combination of reasons, UFC champion Jon Jones seems to get an inordinate amount of hate from fans. Saturday night at UFC 172, Jones got plenty of cheers from the Baltimore crowd, however, and it felt good.
"It was just great to have the crowd on my side again," said Jones at the UFC 172 post fight press conference (full video below).
Jones paid homage to retired Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis as he headed to the Octagon with a little hot-dogging and the arena crowd ate it up. So did Lewis, who is in attendance along with Jones' NFL-player brothers, Arthur (a former Raven) and Chandler.
"It has been a long time since I've had cheers. I figured it would be that way so I said let me really embrace this, let me really give this audience some entertainment. So it was just great. I was living it up. I figured Ray Lewis would be there, a lot of Ravens would be there, so I was just playing it up, and practiced that dance all day, and aced it, I hear. I haven't seen it yet. Ray was happy and, yeah, I'm happy," Jones said.
Jon Jones getting his Ray Lewis on:
Apparently the people of Baltimore didn't begrudge Arthur for taking a big new contract with the Colts and leaving the Ravens. "The people of Baltimore...they still respect [Arthur] a lot. Arthur gets a great reception here… It's great to see that the love is still there. And obviously it trickled into my world, too - I got a lot of respect, and a lot of cheers, which made me feel amazing. I really do appreciate it. I mean the boos I've learned to live with, but it's so rewarding to get some love and respect for once," Jones said.
Do you think Jones will continue to get the reception he deserves from fans moving forward? Well, other than if he fights Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden, of course.

Chuck Liddell 'can't stand' Chael Sonnen's trash talk
It never took much for former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell to get amped enough to fight. The retired legend is the epitome of a game fighter and let his fists and shins do his talking.
Perhaps that's why the "IceMan" says he "can't stand" the way fighters like Chael Sonnen use over the top trash talk to promote fights. Liddell likes Sonnen personally but can't get past his pro-wrestling type of antics.
“Chael’s a nice guy. I’ve met him and hung out with him. I like him, and he’s a nice guy. I can’t stand the way he promotes fights," Liddell recently told MMA Junkie.
“I understand what he’s doing; he wasn’t the most exciting fighter, so he made himself exciting by promoting the fight really well, and he got himself a couple of title shots for it. It works, but that whole crazy WWE-type stuff, that over-the-top stuff when you’re fighting a guy, doesn’t make sense to me, and I don’t like it.
“But it is what it is. Some of the fans like it, and it gets people to watch fights, that’s fine...Some of the things he said, as far as I’m concerned, are over the line.
"Unless you’re known as an actor or being a WWE guy, you can get away with some of that stuff because everybody knows it’s fake.”
According to "The Pit" fighter, promoting fights comes a distant second or third to fighting itself and being a man or woman with respect for yourself. For example, Liddell cited the recently aired fight on the set of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil between former champion and Sonnen as an example of "The American Gangster" going too far.
“I’m sure [Sonnen] didn’t mean to start it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he crossed the line and Wanderlei took a swing at him,” Liddell said.
“Everyone has a line, and especially fighters.”
Do you prefer fighters like Liddell who like to let their actions speak for them or the wild-talking of someone like Sonnen? Let us know in the comments section.

Bellator 119: Quick results for Spike TV event headlined by featherweight tourney final
![]() |
Bellator 119 came to Spike TV tonight, their final card before their first pay-per-view event next weekend. In the night's main event, Daniel Weichel submitted Desmond Green to become the season ten featherweight tournament winner, putting him fourth in line for a title fight in the division; John Alessio beat Eric Wisely by decision; Marius Zaromskis beat Vaughn Anderson, and in the opening bout, Raphael Butler vs. Nick Rossborough went to a majority draw in perhaps the worst fight Bellator's ever put on television, and one which should have been a DQ to boot.

Jon Jones invites Chuck Liddell to super fight
Retired former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell is understandably supporting his long-time training partner Glover Teixeira as the Brazilian challenges Jon Jones this Saturday at UFC 172 for the 205 pound world title. "The IceMan" recently went further than that support of Teixeira, however, when he said that he feels in his prime he would have "walked through" Jon Jones' punches and knocked "Bones" out.
Ever the instigator (and we love ya for it, Chael), UFC fighter and UFC Tonight co-host Chael Sonnen asked Jones what he thought of Liddell's comments Wednesday. “You’ve got to expect Chuck to take his boy’s back or have his boy’s back, and that’s what he’s doing,” Jones began.
“He’s coming out saying a lot of other stuff like he would walk through my punches if he ever fought me and he would have beat me in his prime and all this other stuff.
“I’m not going to sit here and insult Chuck. He’s a very, very loved person by the masses, so I’m just going to keep my mouth shut. But I mean, it’s like, come on, Chuck, just knock it off. Keep your mouth shut.”
Jones seemed to take Liddell's trash talk in stride but struck a serious note when he welcomed Liddell to come out of retirement and back up his words in a superfight against the champ.
“At the end of the day, if Chuck wants to come out retirement, I welcome him to a superfight,” Jones said.
Would you pay to watch Liddell come out of retirement and fight Jon Jones? And, who would you pick in their respective primes - Liddell or Jones?

We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's a rundown of the news that hit the main listing this morning:
-Jon Jones' coach Mike Winkeljohn talked about Daniel Cormier as a potential title challenger, and though he concedes that Cormier is a tough fighter who could have some success against the Champ, he also believes there's a lot more to beating Jones than a little bit of success in a fight. As he said, just getting to Jones doesn't win you the fight. His full quote with more analysis on Jones' abilities as Champ in the main listing.
-Bellator 118 ratings came in, and last week's show drew an average of 701,000 viewers to Spike. The main event bout between Joe Warren and Rafael Silva peaked just over a million viewers. More on that in the main listing.
-Edson Barboza is hopping right back into the cage this July after his loss to Donald Cerrone last month, as he'll take on Evan Dunham on the same card Cerrone is headlining in New Jersey. Get more information on both fighters at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser!

Conor McGregor: 'I'm a man possessed'
Yesterday you read what Cole Miller had to say about his just-announced July 19th UFC main event in Dublin against Conor McGregor. The Irish sensation had plenty to say himself on UFC Tonight when interviewed by Kenny Florian.
"I stay ready," said McGregor, when asked if he'll be fully healed from his ACL injury and surgery.
"Me coming back from this injury is a man possessed. I'm going go in there and I'm going to break him in the very first exchange."
McGregor was fired up about facing Miller, who has called out and bashed the UFC newcomer after his own bouts. "[Miller] opened his mouth, he was under the influence of post-fight adrenaline. It has the same effect as alcohol. It makes you brave. He spoke with bravery, but guess what happened? It wore off. Now he's faced with the reality that he's going to face me July 19," he said.
As for all the advantages that Cole says he will have over Conor come fight night, the bombastic featherweight was dismissive.
"It does not matter," said McGregor.
"He does not have a reach advantage. He's slow, he's scared, I'm fast, I'm fearless. It's no contest. The first exchange I'm going to break him. I see it in his voice. I see it in his body language. He's petrified. I'm coming to get him. Not just him. Forget him. I've been listening to everyone calling me out and saying this and that while I'm forced to sit on the sideline. Now I'm back."
Per usual, McGregor didn't limit the scope of his trash talk to just one future opponent. The proud Dubliner is looking past Cole Miller to other featehrweight contenders as well as champion Jose Aldo.
"I'm going to stop Cole. Whoever's next. Cub [Swanson], I'll break Cub," he said.
"I'll embarrass Chad [Mendes]. I'll annihilate Jose [Aldo]. I'm coming to takeover the division. It's my division."
Do you think Miller's size and Jiu Jitsu will prevail, or will McGregor's speed and unpredictable strikes take the day? Let us know in the comments section.Follow Elias on Twitter @EliasCepeda & @YahooCagewriter

****part one**** This is Joey…
After the Bike Run that took us into California &back, we arrived to Stoney's and I grabbed this photo with him. Little did I know that in less than an hour of the shutter snap, this impressive young man would make me cry.
Randy introduced Joey to the room & he was welcomed w/loud cheers & clapping. His smile didn't leave his face as he began his story which he managed to make humorous throughout. He served our country in the #USMC in both #Iraq & #Afghanistan as an EOD Technician. He and his partner were called in one morning at 7 am to dismantle an IED. It was business as usual-got their job done, & were chatting about personal stuff after. He leaned against a wall and then his whole life changed. He lost both his legs in that IED explosion; his partner was not so lucky. His partner escaped seemingly unscathed, only to pass later on from severe brain trauma. ****to be continued look for part 2****

[VIDEOS] Free Fabricio Werdum Fights Saturday
For our money, two fights stand out as the biggest wins of UFC heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum's career. Tonight, Werdum squares up against Travis Browne for the right to challenge Cain Velasquez for his UFC heavyweight title.
Werdum has had a long path towards UFC title contention. Five and a half years ago, he was quickly dispatched with via KO by an unknown rookie named Junior Dos Santos.
Werdum vs. Fedor
Of course, Dos Santos turned out to be a world-class champion himself. Werdum has had to slowly and steadily work his way back up into the heavyweight's elite class. After losing to JDS, Werdum was released by the UFC and went to Strikeforce. There, three fights after the loss, Werdum faced one of the best of all time - Fedor Emelianenko - as a big underdog in 2010.
It took Werdum under one round to submit "The Last Emperor," and make the realize that he himself was one of the best heavyweights in the world. Check out the full fight video above.
Werdum vs. Nelson
In 2012, Werdum was back in the UFC and faced a stiff challenge in Roy Nelson. Nelson was skilled enough in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu not to fall victim to Werdum's submissions and also powerful enough of a striker on his feet to seem like an up-hill battle for Werdum.
Instead, the Brazilian went out and showed much-improved Muay Thai kickboxing skills and dominated Nelson from bell to bell, earning a unanimous decision win.

Tecia Torres prepares for golden UFC opportunity
There’s only so much Tecia Torres knows and only so much she can prepare, but she’s doing everything she can think of. The undefeated 115 pound MMA contender is set to leave her Florida home in late spring or early summer to take part in the next Ultimate Fighter reality show competition.
“Honestly I wish we had a little bit more details but all I know is that the date we leave is supposed to be in late spring or early summer,” Torres tells Cagewriter.
“Right now, there’s only a little bit more time left so I don’t have that much time to prep. What I’m doing right now before I leave is pay my bills and take care of personal stuff.”
This season of TUF will have the series’ biggest prize in the show’s history – a UFC belt. To start the promotion’s new 115 pound women’s division, the UFC brought over most of Invicta FC’s top 115 pounders and put them on the show.
Unlike past seasons of TUF, this season isn’t filled with prospects, but with elite fighters in a weight class who are just a couple steps away from a title. So, the opportunity is big for the 24 year old Torres.
Given that she doesn’t even know when she’ll be called and plucked from her normal life, team and society in general to move for a couple months to the TUF House, Torres is just trying to train as much as possible and leave her personal affairs in order.
“When I go in there, my coaches will definitely be in my heart and mind. Everybody is a potential opponent on the show so I’ve got to be ready for fifteen different styles,” she says.
“I’m upping my game in all aspects – striking, Jiu Jitsu, wrestling - so I can be ready for every single thing. All my coaches and teammates who have been on TUF or Fight Master before have given me advice. My coaches have looked at tape of a lot of the girls on the show. We haven’t gone into detail about game plans, we are just working on the basics. From what I hear the biggest issue is the mental aspect of being on the show. Weight cutting won’t be an issue for me. But not having access to the world and your people is a mental challenge.”
Not only will Torres live with potential opponents while filming TUF, she’s already fought a number of the other cast. “The Tiny Tornado” can’t speak for how the other women will approach the awkward situation, but she claims to not have any particular axes to grind.
“I don’t know if the other girls will be weird, and not talk to anybody,” she says.”
“I’ve never been in a situation like this before. I have been to summer camp when I was young. It will probably be a little different from that because we’re grown women and fighting for one prize, though [laughs].
"I don’t have beef with anybody. Carla Esparza has kind of called me out already because I beat her best friend Felice Herrig. So, if there’s beef in the house, it will be them towards me. I’m not going to be the one to do that but if they want to, I’ll be there. I’m sure it will make for good television.”
The entirety of the situation may still be too surreal for Torres for her to get caught up in hypothetical TUF House beefs. The undefeated contender may seem on the rise in the sport, but – like season 1 winner Forrest Griffin before her - she was actually on her way out of the sport before getting a call from UFC president Dana White.
“I loved fighting and wanted to do it but it wasn’t something I necessarily thought of as a career path to make money,” Torres reveals.
“I thought I could do this for awhile and go back to kickboxing if I needed to. I didn’t think of it as a career until Invicta signed me. But even then, I was coming to a point where I was going to probably have to stop fighting full-time. Invicta treats the girls well but it wasn’t enough to make a living off of. I’m 24 now and I told my mom that if, by 25, it doesn’t happen for me in MMA, I would realistically go back to work. I went to college and studied criminal justice. I always thought I was going to be a cop until I decided that I didn’t want to harm or kill anyone.”
Torres’ only chance to continue to fight full-time, then, was if the UFC decided to pluck Invicta’s top fighters and sign them to the promotion. Torres heard rumors but didn’t get her hopes up.
“Honestly, all we heard about it were rumors. All of the sudden there were rumors that the UFC was going to sign us, then the rumor was that they weren’t going to do it. I thought, ‘if it happens, great. If not, I’ll start another career.’ I would still have fought, I just would not have been as active. Then, Dana called,” she remembers.
“I got a call and it was from a Nevada number. My boyfriends said, ‘that’s Dana White,’ but I thought that was crazy. It was also like 10pm. But then I answer it and the voice says, ‘Hi, this is Dana White.’ I thought, ‘No [expletive] way. But he said, ‘yeah it’s me.’ He told me that he just wanted to welcome me to the UFC and season 20 of TUF. He told me that the show winner would be the champion and some other quick details. It was just about 10 minutes.”
Torres’ whirlwind then began and she is now suddenly closer to goals she and many other women didn’t think were attainable just a few months ago. More than that, Torres may have the additional pressure of being seen as a favorite in the TUF 20 tournament, since she’s managed to beat several other top fighters in her brief pro career.
The American Top Team fighter brushes that notion aside, however. “Some people ask me that – if I think I’m a favorite. I don’t think of myself in that way at all,” she says.
“I definitely know that people are calling me a favorite. But, in reality, I don’t have that much pro experience. Most of the other girls have a lot more experience than me. In my head, I’m the underdog. I don’t want to be in any other mindset. I’m going into this 0-0.”

UFC champ Renan Barao unhappy with contract
Renan Barao hasn't lost a fight since 2005, is 32-1 and may be the most dominant bantamweight the UFC has ever had. Yet, he says he still made a pittance compared to his last opponent, Urijah Faber.
The two rematched in February with Barao coming out on top for the second time. The Brazilian, who has been bantamweight champion since mid-2012, is stepping up to fight again at the end of May to replace the postponed Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida middleweight fight.
The champ hopes to be able to successfully defend his belt against Faber teammate T.J. Dillashaw on May 24 at UFC 173, but he also recently told Brazilian outlet UOL that he hopes to get a new contract after the fight as well.
"I'm very happy being a UFC champion. But I would like to improve my contract," Barao said.
"Actually, an example: I know that Faber is a much older guy in the UFC, but he's not even the champion and has a much better purse than mine.
"It is what it is, we're working for it to improve. I hope that after this fight i can have a much better contract. I hope it improves every day. This depends on the contract, but I hope they remember that I saved an event."
Despite never holding a UFC belt, Faber was once recognized as featherweight world champion when he held the WEC strap, and is one of the UFC's biggest stars. As such, he makes more than relative newcomer Barao.
Understandably, that is little consolation to the champ Barao, especially as he heads into a fight that he didn't particularly want but says he took to help out the UFC.
"I prefer to rest a little more, but the UFC needed me, so I'm here to save the event," he said.
"Unfortunately, Weidman got injured, so they called me and I accepted. It's always good to fight in these big events, I was pretty happy."
Do you think it is fair for Faber to make more than the champion, a man who has twice beaten him? Let us know in the comments section.

Daron Cruickshank Nails Sick Head Kick To Finish Erik Koch At FN 40
A very even match up going into this one, but after the two fighters exchange strikes, Cruickshank landed that sick head kick and then a flurry of elbows that could have been stopped way earlier than it did. Cruickshank looks very impressive coming out of this fight. Daron Cruickshank has 8 knockouts, 1 submissions and […]

We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's a rundown of the news that hit the main listing this morning:
-The UFC has booked their second fight for their next Fox event, which comes to San Jose on July 26. In lightweight action the current #3 ranked 155 lb. fighter Josh Thomson will take on the new #10 (by way of Nate Diaz and T.J. Grant's removal) in Michael Johnson. Get more information on both fighters with analysis on the booking in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-Miesha Tate is nearing the end of her fight contract with the UFC, and is looking for a raise in her next contract. She believes her stock has gone up in the UFC, and hopes to get a raise with her next contract. She also commented on the possibility of a rematch with Sarah Kaufman, so head to the main listing now to see her quotes with commentary.
-Our UK Contributor, Tom Strong, brought us a story out of the Cage Warriors promotion today. After seven fighters missed weight for last week's CWFC 68 event in Liverpool, the organization is taking the drastic step to fine fighters 60% of their fight purse moving forward if they miss weight. 40% will go to their opponents, with the other 20% getting donated to charity. More information from Tom, with quotes from Cage Warriors officials, in the main listing.
-Our morning poll today is seeking predictions for tomorrow's UFC Fight Night 40 main event between Matt Brown and Erick Silva. 82% of the total vote is coming in for a TKO finish, with 57% of the total vote taking Brown to finish the fight.

Former champ Andrei Arlovski returns to UFC
Six years after leaving the UFC, former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski is back with MMA's top promotion. UFC president Dana White announced Arlovski's return via twitter Thursday.
Welcome back Andrei Arlovski!
— Dana White (@danawhite) April 24, 2014
Arlovski, 35, held the UFC heavyweight belt in 2005, before losing it to Tim Sylvia. After losing two straight to Sylvia, Arlovski strung together three consecutive wins in the UFC but couldn't come to terms on a new contract and left the promotion.
Since leaving the UFC, Arlovski has fought fourteen times for seven different promotions, going 8-5 with 1 no contest. MMA Junkie reports that the UFC is trying to match Arlovski up with Brendan Schaub for a UFC 174 scrap.
We will keep you posted with updates and details as this story develops. Are you excited to see "The Pitbull" back in the big show?

Ronda Rousey: Bethe Correia interesting opponent
Bethe Correia won a unanimous decision over Jessamyn Duke at UFC 172 and then promptly - though symbollically - called out the rest of the Four Horsewomen. The leader of the pro-wrestling inspired MMA stable, UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, recently guest co-hosted an episode of The Fighter and the Kid podcast along with Brendan Schaub.
During the episode, Rousey addressed the undefeated Correia and cited her as a viable future possible title contender. First, though, Rousey teammate Shayna Baszler may get her hands on the Brazilian.
“Shayna called this girl out, and I think Shayna is going to be fighting her next,” Rousey said.
"Rowdy" Ronda defends her belt next against Alexis Davis in July but thinks its possible that she could fight Correia soon after.
“This chick is undefeated,” Rousey said.
“She’s fighting Shayna, so Shayna’s UFC debut is either going to be a huge win for Shayna or this girl is going to be still undefeated, and I’m going to have a huge title fight because this girl is going to have fought both of my girls and is coming after me.
“That’s a storyline. That’s Shayna’s storyline right now. And either she beats [Correia] and moves on and has a bigger name, or it moves on to be my storyline.”
Not that Rousey believes Correira will get past Baszler, however.
“I think Shayna can [expletive] handle it and will shove this [expletive] in this girl’s face, but there’s no lose in this situation,” Rousey said.
“It’s a huge win for Shayna, or it’s a huge setup for a fight [between Correia and Rousey].
In closing, Rousey managed to squeeze in another shot at her two-time foe, Miesha Tate. “If Miesha Tate can get a title shot and she hadn’t even won a single match in the UFC, this chick who’s undefeated and beat two of my friends could be a very interesting fight for me," she said.
Did you see Correia's last bout? If so, do you think she has what it takes to compete with Rousey?

Anthony Johnson dominates Phil Davis at UFC 172
Anthony Johnson is one of the best-205 pounders in the world. After over two years in exile from the UFC, the former welterweight made a triumphant return to the promotion Saturday night, defeating top-ranked Phil Davis by unanimous decision in the UFC 172 co-main event.
Scores were 30-27 all around in favor of Johnson. For three rounds, Johnson used superior striking to tag Davis and excellent takedown defense to keep the fight standing.
Johnson stuffed all eight of the former NCAA Division I wrestling national champion's takedown attempts while landing one of his own. On the feet, Johnson kept his hands low the entire fight but used excellent head movement and footwork to dodge, weave and cut angles while landing punch, after knee after kick to the legs, body and head of Davis.
In his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Johnson thanked the man who cut him from the UFC roster two years ago, UFC president Dana White. Johnson failed to make weight before his 2012 fight with Vitor Belfort and ended up losing via first-round submission.
"Mr. Dana White. Thank you for what you did... he's the man who changed me - made me turn into a beast."
The win is Johnson's seventh straight since the loss to Belfort. Davis' loss is only the second of his career and snapped a three-fight win streak for the wrestler.
Who should be next for Johnson after his leap into the UFC light heavyweight division's elite? Let us know what you think in the comments section.

Erick Silva confident heading into enemy territory
Erick Silva is recognized as one of the very best young welterweights in the UFC but has had mixed results in his past six fights, going 3-3. So, when he got the offer to face the surging Matt Brown, who has ridden a six-fight win streak to the top of the rankings, the Brazilian didn’t hesitate to accept.
“I accepted right away,” Silva tells Cagewriter.
“After my last fight [a KO win over Takenori Sato in February], it was one of the first times when I just kept training. I was already motivated to fight again when my manager called and told me about the offer to fight Brown.”
Brown was originally scheduled to fight former champion Carlos Condit in March before an injured back forced him out of the contest. Now, in his return bout, he’ll take on Silva. “The Immortal” has admitted that someone like Silva – who is as good as anyone in the world, but also doesn’t have name recognition yet – wasn’t his top choice to fight next.
Brown isn’t in the habit of turning down fights, either, however, and so he too was happy to get back into the Octagon. Silva doesn’t act as if he’s insulted by Brown’s words.
The black belt likes the matchup for himself and believes he and Brown’s similar styles will make for an exciting fight. “It’s ok that he’s disappointed to fight me,” Silva says.
“Every fighter expects to fight someone with a better ranking. It’s normal that he was disappointed but I’m really happy that he accepted it because it will be a great fight. We are both aggressive fighters and no matter the result, the audience will have a great time.”
“Indio” hopes to have a great time himself, of course. Should Silva managed to stop Brown’s momentum, he will deserve a top ten ranking.
Silva admits that beating Brown would be a boon to his career and ranking, but also clarifies that he fights for himself, not for titles. “Of course, this is an idea in my head because if I beat a higher-ranked guy, it puts me in great position to for the title. But, I’m really calm right now,” he says.
“My main focus is the fight with Matt Brown. It doesn’t matter if I fight for a belt or not, I just have to win.”
Winning may be especially hard for Silva because he’ll be fighting on Brown’s home court, so to speak, in Ohio. Silva himself has fought for the UFC in his native Brazil against visitors so he understands the ins and outs of home field advantage.
That said, he knows that he’ll feel right at home inside the cage once the door closes, no matter what city or country he’s in. “I’m cool with that,” Silva says of fighting near Brown’s home.
“The audience can influence things and I know people will be cheering for Matt Brown. But, when the door is closed, there will only be two fighters in there and everybody else doesn’t matter. “
