Alistair Overeem wants to get back into UFC cage soon
Alistair Overeem may have just gotten knocked out, but he wants to fight again as soon as possible. Overeem was knocked out by Ben Rothwell Sep. 5 but maintains that he was somehow not badly hurt enough to warrant taking time off.
"[I’d like to fight] as soon as possible, because I was not out," he said in a recent interview.
"I was not sleeping. I was just dazed, and Ben capitalized. So I guess if it’s up to me, not too far away."
Whether or not his eyes closed, the loss was the third TKO or KO in Overeem's last four fights, and the ninth TKO or KO loss of the big man's career. Overeem has taken a great deal of punishment over the course of his long MMA and kickboxing career.
He's also losing much more than he's winning, of late. It would seem that the Dutchman should at least consider a break in action, if not more, at this point.
Of course, the heart of a fighter doesn't give out easily, and it often overrides the mind. As such, the 34 year-old veteran of over fifty pro MMA fights and many more kickboxing ones, wants to fight on and do so again this year
At least he's showing some uncharacteristic public humility after his last loss. "Don’t underestimate Ben," he said of his last opponent, Rothwell.
"This guy’s 280 pounds, he can take a punch and he hits like a truck. It is the UFC, everybody is there to win."

Excerpt: “Eddie Alvarez is making his long awaited UFC debut after finally getting his release from Bellator. -The UFC 178 contests are now live. If you'd like to take part in the prediction and betting games for the event, head to the mobile site now.

-Vitor Belfort thinks Chris Weidman's injury is suspect, and says it was the only way the Champ could hold onto the title past Christmas. Catch Belfort's comments with further analysis on the mobile site.
-Tim Kennedy isn't happy with the Nevada Athletic Commission due to a lack of random drug testing into UFC 178. He's been consistently campaigning for it, and is less than pleased with the response he's gotten thus far. See his comments with additional thoughts on the mobile site.

Coach says UFC's Conor McGregor could be three-division champ
Rising UFC featherweight Conor McGregor and his team are confident heading into their UFC 178 fight against Dustin Poirier this Saturday. McGregor's coach John Kavanagh is looking way past this fight, however, and toward all-time greatness for the "Notorious" one.
“It’s hard to put in words why I think he will be remembered as the greatest of all time," Kavanagh recently told SevereMMA. "I do think that he will definitely be a two-weight world champion, that’s a given, and I think with a certain set of circumstances he will be the first and only three-weight division UFC champion. That would be at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight."
Whoah.
All right. Three fights in, McGregor certainly appears to be the hottest prospect in the featherweight division, but he's also in one of MMA's most talent-rich classes, which is ruled by longtime king Jose Aldo.
So, to take for granted that the Irishman will become the 145-pound champ is a stretch. Of course, that's why everyone is in the game, and they have to possess that type of confidence to train and get in the cage.
But for Kavanagh, winning the featherweight belt will be just the beginning for McGregor. Dan Henderson, BJ Penn and Randy Couture have all won world titles at two different weight classes.
Can McGregor become the first to win titles in three? “It’s not hard for me to imagine that scenario," Kavanagh said.
"I think two people have already done it in two weight classes and even then they did in a time that was a little different – the skill set was a little bit lower."

Jacare Souza ends great night of UFC fights with brilliant performance
Jacare Souza stated his case for a shot at the UFC middleweight championship in brilliant fashion on Friday at the Foxwoods Resort in Ledyard, Conn., dominating one of the best 185-pounders the UFC has to offer.
Gegard Mousasi stopped Souza with an upkick in a 2008 match between the men in Japan, but the rematch at UFC Fight Night 50 was no contest. Souza was masterful, keeping Mousasi on his back much of the night before finishing him with a guillotine choke with 30 seconds left in the third round.
Souza is the most logical contender to face the winner of the Dec. 6 title match between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort, though UFC president Dana White would not commit to it.
There is little more that Souza could do, however, to prove his worthiness. Mousasi has great hands, but Souza's striking was sharper and more consistent. He used his strikes to back Mousasi against the cage and then take him to the mat.
When they went to the ground, Mousasi couldn't get up. He defended submission attempts well over the first couple of rounds, but Souza was relentless and kept moving looking for the finish.
He went for the arm numerous times, but Mousasi was able to fight off the Kimura attempts. But Souza was not deterred. He used his strikes to back Mousasi against the cage, took him down and then snapped on the guillotine when Mousasi went into a seated position.
Souza, who has won seven in a row, hoped he erased all doubts with the effort.
"If anyone doubts that, they're completely wrong," Souza said of his title hopes. "[Former light heavyweight champion] Lyoto [Machida] fought this guy for five rounds and couldn't finish him."
It was a night of great finishes. Joe Lauzon opened the main card with a great back-and-forth match with Michael Chiesa. The bout was named Fight of the Night, Lauzon's UFC record 13th fight night bonus.
Lauzon kneed Chiesa in the head, opening a massive, gaping wound above Chiesa's right eye. Chiesa complained when the doctor suggested to referee Herb Dean that the fight be stopped, but it would have been dangerous for the fight to go on and Dean was correct.
Both main card heavyweight bouts ended quickly. Former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem was knocked out for the third time in his last four fights when he was pounded out at 2:19 in the first by Ben Rothwell. Rothwell landed an overhand right above the ear, which dropped Overeem. Rothwell pounced and finished him.
"The right hand I hit him with didn’t knock him out, but I jumped all over him the second he wobbled," Rothwell said.
Derrick Lewis called out Matt Mitrione, and he got his wish, but that proved to be a mistake when a short right hand by Mitrione ended the fight after just 41 seconds.

He’s Back! Dominick Cruz Dominates At UFC 178
Dominick Cruz made a statement to the rest of the UFC’s bantamweight division Saturday night at UFC 178, returning from almost three years away due to injury to run through Takeya Mizugaki. “The Dominator” needed just 61 seconds to finish Mizugaki, earning his 20th career win. Earlier this year, Cruz was stripped of the UFC […]

Alexander Shlemenko: 'Losing to Tito Ortiz shook me'
Dealing with adversity, with loss, is often what defines a champion. Long streaks of dominance are fine and preferable, but they don't tell someone what kind of fighter they are.
Heading into his light heavyweight fight against UFC hall of famer Tito Ortiz, Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko had won thirteen straight fights. So, it is little wonder that he felt so confident heading into the fight.
After being dispatched via choke by Ortiz in under three minutes, however, the Russian admits to being "shaken up." Shlemenko's dominant streak of wins had just come crashing down, but he responded to the fall like a true champion - by getting back in the gym immediately.
"I started training again the next day, after the fight [with Ortiz]," he tells Cagewriter through a translator, two days before returning to the cage in Phoenix against Brandon Halsey.
"I was so upset and not just because I lost, but because of the way I lost. I didn’t even get punched once. I didn’t get scratched in the fight...the loss really shook me up. It shook me to the point where, after the fight, I feel like a new fighter. So, that and because I had to help a student of mine get ready to fight, it was easy psychologically and physically for me to get back into training hard."
Shlemenko also says he made a great deal of changes in his training, from stand up striking to wrestling and submission work. However, the biggest change in his training was his attitude towards it.
"Yes, I made some significant changes," he reveals.
"First and foremost, however, I changed my attitude towards training. During my preparation for Tito, I felt way too relaxed. I have changed my mental approach to training, in addition to learning a lot of new techniques."
Shlemenko may need all that in order to win his next bout on Friday. According to the champion, his opponent Halsey brings a strong grappling game and a sharp mind into the fight.
"He's a strong, big guy with a lot of weight. Obvisouly he's a great wrestler and against Brett Cooper he showed that he's also a thinking fighter," he says.
"He thinks about strategy before his fights and he utilizes that strategy well in the fight."
In Halsey, Shlemenko will fight an undefeated contender who doubtless has the confidence of a professional who has never tasted defeat. "Storm" has the confidence of a champion recently wounded, however, and the lessons learned from recent defeat may make him all the more dangerous.
He doesn't know what will happen on fight night, but he has visualized one thing over and over, in the weeks leading up to Friday - Winning. "It is difficult to visualize what may happen in a fight," he admits.
"But the one thing I can visualize is that, at the end of the day, my hand will be raised again and I will keep my belt."

Injuries, lay-off forced UFC's Dominick Cruz to redefine himself
Dominick Cruz was justifiably proud of being one of the best fighters in the world, pound for pound. The former WEC and UFC bantamweight champion worked hard to develop into a champion, after all.
However, the fighter says that the quest to become and then remain champion became all-consuming not just in terms of his time and effort, but also in terms of his identity and self-worth. Three years away from competition because of injuries, revealed this to "The Dominator."
"For a long time, I felt like my identity was to fight," Cruz said in a recent interview.
"My identity was to be a world champion. That almost defined me. Then, over the course of these last three years, I really found that had nothing to do with me. All that was was just something that I did, and I'm happy that I've had to go through this, because I've had to learn a new piece of myself. I had to find a new piece of myself, take away what I thought defined me completely out of my life, and I had to redefine myself."
Cruz, who returns to the Octagon this Saturday at UFC 178 against Takeya Mizugaki, said that he began to use MMA fighting as a crutch, and in order to avoid dealing with himself. He loved and still does love martial arts and competing, but has become a more well-rounded person during his time away from fighting.
"I feel that I fell somewhat under that category where I was using fighting to kind of run from my own self to an extent, to kind of numb the things that I thought about myself," Cruz explained.
"When I had fighting taken away, I was forced to look at myself in the mirror and say, 'What are you without fighting? What are you without being a champion? What are you without being able to train every single day to numb whatever you're trying to run from?'
"What I found out is that what I needed was to do that, to look at myself in the mirror and to recreate myself, find a new person inside me,. And I've done that. I've been able to become an analyst over this time, learn more about fighting. I was able to help coach and help my teammates become better athletes. I was able to get involved in some charity stuff and help others with their lives. I was able to build my relationship with god closer. There were so many things I've been able to switch my hats on and really focus on something other than beating people up for a living, and it's just really changed me. Now I can add that to the fact that I also get to fight, I get to re-live my passion all over again."

-Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier received their punishment today from the Nevada Athletic Commission regarding their brawl at the UFC 178 media day in Las Vegas last month. Each fighter was fined 10% of the purse they'll receive at UFC 182 when they fight in Las Vegas, amounting to $50,000 for Jones and $9,000 for Cormier. -John Moraga vs. Jussier Formiga is set for UFC on Fox 13, as is a bout between Anthony Birchak and Ian Entwistle. More on those fighters on the mobile site now.
-In our morning poll today, we asked readers whether they were more or less excited for UFC 181 with the main event change caused by Chris Weidman's injury. A majority are at the same level of excitement or higher, with only 34% saying they're less interested in the event now.

Despite shedding 20 pounds in 24 hours, Mark Hunt delivers massive KO
It's not all that surprising when a fight with fighters weighing a combined 524 pounds ends in a devastating one-punch knockout.
What is surprising, though, is that one of them was able to score a massive knockout after having a pretty incredible battle with the scale.
A UFC source who asked not to be identified told Yahoo Sports a day before the weigh-in at UFC Fight Night 52 at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo that Mark Hunt had to cut 19 pounds to make the heavyweight limit of 265. Hunt, who was 284 the day before the weigh in, worked the weight off and weighed 264 officially.
He then went out and performed like a star, catching Roy Nelson with a perfectly placed right uppercut that knocked "Big Country" cold. Nelson went down face first as referee Leon Roberts immediately stopped the fight while Hunt simply walked away.
Hunt denied at the post-fight news conference that he weighed 284 the day before the weigh-in, but Yahoo Sports spoke to multiple sources in the UFC both before and after the fight, all of whom confirmed that Hunt indeed was 20 pounds over.
Hunt didn't admit to having dropped that much at the post-fight news conference, but he did say he was struggling with his weight.
"Uh, no. I don’t know where they got those rumors from. I didn’t have to cut 19 pounds. I think I had to cut eight or nine."
Cutting large amounts of weight the week of a weigh-in is a common (albeit dangerous) occurrence in mixed martial arts, but it is unusual to see it in the UFC heavyweight division.
It was an astounding performance by Hunt given his weight loss and it capped a solid night of fights.
UFC president Dana White was typically excited by the Hunt-Nelson fight, but said he didn't know what would be next for Hunt.
"I need to talk to [matchmaker] Joe Silva and see what he thinks," White said of Hunt's next opponent. "They both really look good when they're fighting guys outside of the top 10. But those guys in the top 10 give them both a lot of trouble. Stipe [Miocic] is a great athlete and he gave Roy a lot of trouble with his movement. Look at what happened in the JDS [Junior dos Santos] fight with Hunt. Those guys are good, but they have had trouble with the top, top guys.
"But when you hit that hard, anything can happen. As Hunt showed, all it takes is one shot with guys that hit as hard as they do."

EODR Ep. 16 Reignbow God X Native Minds
Is TUF 20 fighter Rose Namajunas the next Ronda Rousey?
UFC superstar and bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey isn't close to being done, but she's already picked out her successor. Twenty two year-old Rose "Thug" Namajunas (2-1) is a contender on this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and, according to the "Rowdy" one, she's also "The Next Ronda Rousey."
The young submission artist is competing on TUF 20 to become the UFC's first ever 115 pound champ and Rousey thinks she's got what it takes to do that, and be a mainstream star. "I called it from the very beginning. As soon as I saw her, I saw this girl is special," Rousey recently told media members.
"She’s got an amazing skill set, she’s an exciting fighter. She takes risks, she’s gorgeous, and she’s charismatic."
Namajunas, who also dates former UFC heavyweight Pat Barry, lost her last fight, via decision to Tecia Torres. However, she burst onto the pro scene with two dramatic submission wins.
"I really think she has all the tools that are needed in order to be the next really influential champion," Rousey concluded.
Only time will tell if Namajunas will become a champion. We know one thing for sure - she's already fun to watch, in and out of the cage.
Watch her sucker punch a sleeping Barry while singing along to the Lion King as well as some of her nasty submission skills below, if you don't believe us.

Extraordinary day: Thiago Silva cut, Anthony Johnson suspended, Wanderlei Silva retires
This must be what it feels like these days to cover the NFL.
Two cases of domestic violence, an athlete holding a gun, allegations of drug use and an unhappy fighter ripping his organization highlighted the news that happened Friday in the UFC.
Iconic light heavyweight Wanderlei Silva, one of the most popular fighters in mixed martial arts history, announced his retirement in a sometimes rambling video he posted on YouTube in which he blasted the UFC for the way it treated fighters and for underpaying them.
Earlier in the day, the company announced in a terse statement it posted on its website that it had indefinitely suspended light heavyweight Anthony Johnson, who is No. 5 in its ratings, after the mother of two of his children obtained a temporary protective order against him. She told police he'd knocked out two of her teeth in 2012.
The UFC noted in its statement it had hired "a third-party law firm" to investigate the allegations against Johnson, which he denies.
Also on Friday, the UFC dropped light heavyweight fighter Thiago Silva (no relation to Wanderlei Silva) after his ex-wife posted a video of him holding a gun while she said he is high on drugs.
Thiago Silva was arrested in February in Florida and charged with two counts of attempted murder, among other charges. Charges were later reduced to two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Thiago Silva had been accused of putting a gun in his ex-wife's mouth.
He barricaded himself in his home and the SWAT team surrounded it. He was tazed by a police officer and was taken into custody without incident.
Charges were later dropped because prosecutors learned his ex-wife had moved out of the country and wasn't cooperating.
Incredibly, Thiago Silva was reinstated on Sept. 5. UFC president Dana White defended the move by saying that Silva had gone through the legal process and had come out "untainted."
But when Silva's wife released a video Friday apparently taken while the couple was still married that showed him holding a gun while she said he was high on drugs, the UFC swiftly released him. His ex-wife, Thaysa Kamiji, told MMA Fighting that she's moved to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates with her new husband, MMA trainer Pablo Popovitch.
The last bombshell dropped late in the day when Wanderlei Silva, who has been battling the Nevada Athletic Commission for avoiding a drug test, announced his retirement in an extraordinary and frequently emotional video.
Wanderlei Silva said he had lost his desire to fight because of the actions of UFC management. He blasted them over their treatment of former bantamweight champion Renan Barao, saying they'd made him fight too often, and didn't allow his body time to recover from fighting and having to cut weight. Wanderlei Silva said the reason Barao couldn't make weight for his rematch with T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 177 on Aug. 30 is because he'd trained almost non-stop for six months.
"He lost the belt and then had to fight the rematch right away," Wanderlei Silva said of Barao on his video, in which he was speaking Portuguese with English subtitles. "After that, his body couldn't handle it and he passed out while cutting weight."
Wanderlei Silva said the UFC tried to force him to fight when he told them he was injured and not prepared. He then blasted company officials for what he said was a lack of respect and for failing to pay fighters fairly.
"I feel that I don't have a dignified stage where the athletes are respected," he said. " ... The few fighters who have a name are forced to fight all year long, because they want to make 50 events a year."
Later he said athletes aren't paid well, "only crumbs."
"They use us to make rivers of money because this event is making a lot of money," Wanderlei Silva said.
He failed to address his drug test issue with the Nevada commission. On May 23, a collector was sent by the commission to his gym to take a sample since he'd attended a news conference that day to promote a planned July 5 fight against Chael Sonnen.
Wanderlei Silva declined to be tested and the Nevada commission viewed it as a failed test. But Silva fought the suspension and his attorney filed a motion to dismiss the complaint. Ross Goodman, Silva’s attorney, contends that the commission doesn't have jurisdiction because he wasn’t licensed at the time.

UFC's Joe Lauzon on opponent: 'He is always prepared'
UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon may have an experience advantage over his opponent this Friday, Michael Chiesa, but "J-Lau" thinks highly of "The Maverick." Lauzon says that he's better at everything Chiesa is, but knows he's facing a tough test in the tall and rangy Ultimate Fighter winner.
"He is always prepared for his fights," Lauzon tells Cagewriter.
"He doesn't always get credit for his wins but you can tell that he prepares very well. He's also a south paw, long, and has good Jiu Jitsu. He takes advantage of his long arms by using the jab really good. He's also good at taking the back at weird angles."
Lauzon is always confident but even he can't predict exactly how the fight with Chiesa will go. "It's going to be a really exciting fight," he says.
"A lot of the things he's good at, I feel that I'm better at. He uses his boxing to set up his Jiu Jitsu well, and I'm pretty good at that. He has good Jiu Jitsu and I think I have great Jiu Jitsu. I don't quite know how the fight is going to go. I could see us going out there hard and one guy clipping the other one right away. You never know."
Lauzon isn't concerned about his over eight-month lay off since last fighting in December, 2013. The Boston-area fighter says he's had the best training camp of his career.
"I've had a couple other longer lay-offs than this," he says.
"I'm not super crazy about an eight to nine month lay off but based on my sparring, I feel really good about it. Most people like to stay a bit more active but I don't mind taking a little more time than most between camps because I train real hard. I take a lot of chances in training camp and so I get a lot of wear and tear, pulling this and pulling that. So, I didn't mind the time off."
At the end of the day, Lauzon can't wait to get back into the cage after a trying 2014. "He's going to be tough to deal with," he admits.
"But I'm ready to go."

[VIDEO] Ronda Rousey and Gilbert Melendez spar
UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is all healed up from a broken hand and got back to training recently with a Jiu Jitsu sparring session against No. 1 UFC lightweight contender Gilbert Melendez. Check out the video above for a beautiful display of good-natured but speedy grappling between Rousey and Melendez.
Melendez definitely has a size and strength advantage, but Rousey uses her speed and aggressiveness in scrambles to threaten with back control and arm bars. The former Judo Olympian seems able to get into position for an arm bar from anywhere, and it's pretty cool to watch.
Check it out and let us know what other pro-fighter sparring sessions you'd enjoy getting a sneak peek at, if you could.

9/12 MORNING UPDATE: Overeem to get another UFC fight; White doesn't think racism at play with Jon Jones; GSP will get title bout if and when he returns; TUF 20's Torres, Esparza spar over PED accusations; TUF 20 poll results

9/12 MORNING UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site this morning:
-Despite (T)KO losses in three of his last four fights, Alistair Overeem is going to get another fight in the UFC. That's according to UFC President Dana White, who says Overeem remains a top ten heavyweight. Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for further thoughts on Overeem's status in the division.
-White also commented this week on the recent idea posited by Joe Rogan that racism may be behind some of the fan backlash against UFC Champ Jon Jones. White disagrees, and doesn't think that race issues play any part. See his comments, with further thoughts on the situation, on the mobile site now.
-In another subject White touched on this week, Georges St-Pierre's theoretical return will bring him a title fight if he wants it. White said if and when the now former Welterweight Champ decides he wants to come back, he can have any fight he wants from them. More of White's comments on St-Pierre with additional thoughts on the mobile site.
-TUF 20 competitor Tecia Torres has gotten some veiled accusations of PED use thrown her way this week after looking less than herself in Wednesday's debut episode, and she fired back at those suggesting such things, including fellow cast member Carla Esparza. That led to Esparza sending a harsh reply, essentially making further allegations without claiming them as her own. See the commnts from both women with further analysis on the mobile site.
-Speaking of TUF 20, our morning poll today asked readers whether or not they're watching or planning to watch this season given the disappointing debut ratings. Perhaps surprisingly, 55% said they watched Wednesday and won't miss an episode. Now, obviously our reader base is more in line with the more than casual fan, and it seems to be that audience the UFC hasn't grabbed for this season.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

Quebec commission declines to hear Alessio Sakara's UFC 154 appeal request

On Friday, Quebec's La Regie des alcools des courses et des jeux (the baord that governs combat sports in the province) declined to hear Sakara's protest that referee Dan Miragliotta mishandled the bout, which took place Nov. 17 at Montreal's Bell Centre.
French-language outlet LaPress.ca was the first to report the board's decision.
