Jon Jones Breaks His Silence (Full Interview)

Cagewriter's most popular posts in 2014
MMA produced more than its share of interesting stories in 2014 and we covered it all here at Cagewriter. Here are the 20 most-clicked posts of 2014:
1. Ronda Rousey gets put on the spot after quick win (July 6)
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most-trafficked Cagewriter post of 2014 revolved around the UFC's queen bee. Moments after defending her bantamweight title at UFC 175 with a 16-second KO of Alexis Davis, Rousey was asked by UFC commentator Joe Rogan if she would be willing to fight again in three weeks' time to fill a main-event void. Ever the company woman, Rousey said she'd do whatever the UFC needed. But the question clearly incensed UFC president Dana White, as he got into a heated conversation with Rogan afterward in the Octagon. Later, White explained that his issue was with the UFC's production team that fed Rogan the question and not Rogan himself. In the end, Rousey got a nice little break from action and will return from her hiatus on Feb. 28, 2015, to defend her title against Cat Zingano.
2. Leslie Smith gets her ear torn half off by punch (Nov. 15)
Chalk this one up to morbid curiosity. Smith was in a slugfest with Jessica Eye at UFC 180 when Eye caught Smith with a right that gruesomely split Smith's left ear open. The wound would eventually lead to a doctor stoppage, as blood continued to stream down Smith's face.

3. Cung Le tests positive for HGH, receives ban from UFC (Sept. 30)
When a fighter posts a picture like the one Le posted on Instagram (shown at right), he's leaving himself open for criticism – and potentially added drug tests. After seeing the photo of Le, opponent Michael Bisping requested that the UFC do both blood and urine testing for their fight. The resulting positive tests (excess level of Human Growth Hormone) led to: a nine-month suspension; an additional three-month suspension arbitrarily added on by 'UFC Senior Management' after the initial suspension; the UFC rescinding its suspension of Le after it was reported that Le's tests had been botched; Le demanding an apology from the UFC; and, perhaps as a byproduct of the incident, Le joining a class-action lawsuit against the UFC for alleged 'illegal market monopolization.' Le is still under contract with the UFC.
4. MMA fighter taps out instead of beating on opponent (May 21)
Meet Good Guy MMA Fighter Mike Pantangco. The amateur lost in extraordinary fashion in May. Pantangco appeared to be teeing off on Jeremy Rasner during their Prison City Fight League bout when he kneeled down and tapped out, signaling his submission and forcing the referee to step in and hand the win to his opponent. When asked why he did it, Pantangco said, "We don't get paid, and I know that the only thing [that'd happen] is him to go to the hospital or get hurt. I just [felt] terrible so I'm just going to give him the win."
5. Paul Heyman: Brock Lesnar fought at 50 percent in the UFC (Aug. 7)
Thanks to his wrasslin' background, Lesnar is one of the most popular fighters to have ever stepped into the Octagon. So when Lesnar's manager/friend Paul Heyman opined that Lesnar was '50, 75 percent' when he fought Alistair Overeem in 2011, it resonated. Heyman didn't completely rule out Lesnar returning to the Octagon, but he did say that the star is happy with his current WWE deal.
6. Paige VanZant set to become youngest woman in UFC history (Aug. 7)
The 'Next Ronda Rousey' label gets slapped on pretty well all young, attractive and talented female MMA fighters and VanZant, 20, is the latest to take up that mantle. After being told she was too young to appear on "The Ultimate Fighter" due to the presence of alcohol in the house, she became the youngest woman to ever fight in the UFC on Nov. 22. Her Octagon debut against Kailin Curran was a seesaw affair that ended with VanZant earning a TKO win at 2:54 of the third round. It was recognized as the Fight of the Night and showed VanZant is much more than a pretty face.
7. Mark Hunt drops 20 pounds, delivers massive KO (Sept. 20)
Hunt has an admitted habit of ballooning up in weight in between fights and he apparently came dangerously close to missing the heavyweight limit of 265 before his fight against Roy Nelson on Sept. 20. Hunt reportedly weighed 284 the day before the weigh-in, but he worked off the weight and came in at 264 officially.
8. Bobby Lashley: Separating fact from fiction (Oct. 24)
Fans love their crossover stars. Our Q&A showed another side of the WWE star/MMA veteran.
9. MMA legend Anderson Silva delivers delusional quote (Jan. 13)
After two equally shocking losses at the hands of UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman – the latter of which produced a devastating broken leg injury that put Silva's career in jeopardy – the Brazilian was seemingly struggling to cope. In a curious interview with Globo, Silva said he didn't think Weidman should consider their Dec. 28, 2013 bout a win because "it was an accident and I'm pretty sure I would have won the fight." He went on to brag about the power of the kick that broke his own leg, which, to borrow a line from former Cagewriter Elias Cepeda, is tantamount to bragging about bruising a guy's fist after he knocked you out cold.
10. Ronda Rousey-Gina Carano – the fight that never happened (July 18)
Fans also love their superfights and a Rousey-Carano matchup is a bout most would embrace in short order. White was confident he could get Carano to sign a contract that'd make it happen, but several months later, the superfight's likelihood is bleak. Rousey is scheduled to fight Cat Zingano on Feb. 28 and Carano opted to book another movie deal that should keep her busy for the foreseeable future. White hasn't closed the door completely, but this quote from September doesn't inspire confidence: “(Carano) is the hardest human being we've ever dealt with. The problem is she allows herself to be handled by these Hollywood (expletive) idiots. In dealing with her people, I don't know if it can be done.”

TJ Dillashaw Will be “Rooting” For Jose Aldo Versus Conor McGregor
TJ Dillashaw relayed not that long ago that he wants to fight Jose Aldo “so bad”, but evidently he’ll be cheering for the UFC featherweight champ when he throws down with Conor McGregor. Since Aldo decisioned Chad Mendes in October, who is Dillashaw’s buddy and teammate, the latter has been extremely open about the fact […]

Conor McGregor wins spectacularly, earns title shot against Jose Aldo
Conor McGregor guaranteed himself a featherweight title shot and a nice paycheck Sunday with his performance in a one-sided rout of Dennis Siver at TD Garden in Boston.
But when McGregor did a flying leap over the cage and raced toward champion Jose Aldo, seated ringside, making threats and shouting epithets, the passion for and the significance of the upcoming title fight increased monumentally.
It now stands as one of the most hotly anticipated fights of the year, one that will draw a massive crowd and guarantee each of them a massive payday.
McGregor was an 11-1 favorite over Siver, but it was like he was an 11,000-1 favorite. He was completely composed and in control and ruthlessly broke Siver down and tore him apart.
The end came at 1:54 of the second round, shortly after McGregor landed a straight left that sent Siver staggering backward onto the canvas. McGregor mounted him and quickly finished it, forcing referee Herb Dean to wave it off.
Siver was cut, his face full of welts and bumps and looked as if he was mugged by a gang of thieves.
McGregor had boasted before the fight that he'd easily outclass Siver and stop him early. He went out and methodically did just that, raking Siver consistently with straight left hands and hurting him with kicks to the legs and body.
His only shortcoming on this night was in coming up a bit short of a win in just two minutes. But he even had an answer for that.
"I'll tell you, I said two minutes, but I meant two rounds," McGregor said, deadpan, in the cage not long after he'd scored the biggest win of his career.
McGregor turned the featherweight division on its head almost from the moment he made his UFC debut on April 6, 2013, when he blew out Marcus Brimage.
He clearly has a quick wit and the gift of gab and an innate sense for promotion.
He was calling himself the best fighter in the division as soon as he joined it, and it was hard to know what to make of him. But with each successive performance, he showed that he is no joke as a fighter.
That is hardly a prediction he'll defeat Aldo, who not only has won 18 bouts in a row over a more than nine-year span, but stands among the greatest mixed martial arts fighters ever.
McGregor hasn't been in with a big, tough, grinding wrestler, and it remains to be seen how he'd do against that sort of fighter. But Aldo is the consummate striker and isn't going to look to take McGregor down, so stylistically, the bout sets up as an intriguing stand-up battle.
Even former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, who has a legitimate claim to the next title shot at Aldo, ahead of McGregor, came away impressed.
Working as an analyst on Fox Sports 1, Edgar said, "McGregor lived up to the hype. He looked phenomenal."
Aldo did his part by the way he handled himself post-fight. Aldo has often come across as a dour and angry man, unapproachable, and always seems to have a chip on his shoulder.
But when McGregor hurled himself over the cage and stood a few feet away, yelling at him like a lunatic, Aldo showed the guts of a burglar. He didn't flinch. He didn't move. He simply stood and smiled.
And while virtually everyone else who had seen McGregor was impressed, Aldo saw things a bit differently.
"That's normal to me," Aldo said. "He's a joker and a court jester to me. All I do is laugh at him."
It will likely be held in May in Las Vegas and figures to have intense interest and a heavy build-up.
McGregor played his win for all it was worth and hurled insults at Aldo once he returned to the cage.
"I'm going to hand him my spit bucket, and then stand back and wait for him to spit shine the belt so it's ready for me to take it," McGregor said.
He'll have to deal with his share of haters because of his outspoken manner. And it's almost certain he'll go into the fight with Aldo as an underdog.
Aldo isn't going to be intimidated and it's going to take a Herculean effort to defeat him.
McGregor, though, proved on Sunday he belongs in the equation as the most deserving choice for Aldo's next challenger.
His critics can run down a list of all the things he hasn't done, but he's won five fights in a row, finishing four, and he's looked increasingly better each time out.
Aldo may shut his mouth for good, and it would be no shock if Aldo won going away.
Aldo is that good; he does that to most men he faces.
But you know what? McGregor is plenty good, too.

Full Jon Jones 1 on 1 Interview – Discuss his drug use, time in rehab, drugs in college
UFC champ Jon Jones enters rehab after testing positive for cocaine
LAS VEGAS – UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones announced Tuesday that he has entered a drug treatment facility.
The announcement came just days after Jones defeated Daniel Cormier on Saturday in the main event of UFC 182 at the MGM Grand Garden in a five-round decision that left many considering him as the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time.
But in a random drug test given to him on Dec. 4 by the Nevada Athletic Commission, Jones tested positive for benzoylecgonine, the main metabolite in cocaine.
The Nevada commission follows the World Anti-Doping Agency code and benzoylecgonine is not banned out-of-competition. As a result, the commission was unable to penalize Jones or prevent him from fighting despite knowing of the positive test.
It conducted a follow-up test later in December that Jones passed. Yahoo Sports was unable to get the exact date of the second test that Jones passed.
Jones released a statement to Yahoo Sports through his attorney acknowledging his problem.
"With the support of my family, I have entered into a drug treatment facility. I want to apologize to my fiancée, my children, as well as my mother, father, and brothers for the mistake that I made. I also want to apologize to the UFC, my coaches, my sponsors and equally important to my fans. I am taking this treatment program very seriously. Therefore, at this time my family and I would appreciate privacy."
The UFC released the following statement in regards to Jones:
“We support UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ decision to enter a drug treatment facility to address his recent issue. While we are disappointed in the failed test, we applaud him for making this decision to enter a drug treatment facility. Jon is a strong, courageous fighter inside the Octagon, and we expect him to fight this issue with the same poise and diligence. We commend him on his decision, and look forward to him emerging from this program a better man as a result.”
Nevada commission chairman Francisco Aguilar said the commission is going to discuss out-of-competition drug tests at its next meeting and whether to break from the WADA code in similar situations.
"I am pleased that Mr. Jones is addressing this issue and seeking help for his problem," Aguilar said.
The test given to Jones was analyzed for anabolic agents, peptide hormones, growth factors and related substances, beta-2 agonists, hormone and metabolic modulators, diuretics and other masking agents, stimulants, narcotics, canabinoids and glucocorticosteroids.

But this week's Canadian winner, "A-shock," from London, Ontario, has some interesting ideas on how to infuse new life into the UFC's reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter."

1/1 NIGHT UPDATE: Roundtable on 2014's Fighter of the Year; Lawler-Hendricks III next; White says UFC getting away from drug testing plans; McGregor to get Aldo with win this month

1/1 NIGHT UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site tonight:
-In a new roundtable tonight, the crew gives their thoughts on who should go down as 2014's “Fighter of the year”. Excerpt from Dan Moore: “I wouldn't normally consider anyone for this award who's had a loss in the previous twelve months, but it's hard to look beyond Robbie Lawler this year. He lost a ridiculously good fight by a slender margin, and then bounced back to secure another title shot with wins over Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown. Finally, he finished off the year by clinching his first ever UFC Title in another very good fight. Honorable mention to T.J. Dillashaw, who's a close runner-up, but my Fighter of the Year goes to Robbie Lawler.” Head to our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for the full roundtable.
-Speaking of Robbie Lawler, his next fight is going to come against Johny Hendricks (again). UFC President Dana White said tonight that's the direction they're heading. Head to the mobile site for more thoughts on that matchup coming next.
-In other Dana White comments from today, he says they're going away from plans to implement year-round drug testing after their legal team erred in the handling of Cung Le's drug test in August. See his comments with further analysis on the move on the mobile site.
-Finally, Conor McGregor will be next for Jose Aldo if he beats Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59 this month. More on that on the mobile site.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we61 have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

UFC's Luke Rockhold: I'm better than Michael Bisping, everywhere
UFC middleweight contender Luke Rockhold (12-2) is confident heading into his UFC Fight Night: Sydney main event contest against Michael Bisping (25-6) Nov. 8. Like, really confident.
By all appearances, he should be. Rockhold has lost only once since 2007 (whereas Bisping has lost half of his last six fights), is a half-decade younger than the British star, and has stopping power on the feet and on the ground.
And, oh yeah, Bisping was recently dominated by a fighter who Rockhold has a win over, in Tim Kennedy. All that said, the American Kickboxing Academy stand out insists that he respects Bisping's abilities, though he can't stand his abbrasive personality.
"There are definitely up-sides to fighting Bisping," Rockhold tells Cagewriter.
"He's well-known, and I have a win over Tim Kennedy, who beat him. But, Bisping is a tough guy. You can't write him off. He's good at everything. He's been able to beat some of the top guys out there because he can expose their weaknesses. Usually, guys have a weaknesses somewhere. He's strong in all three areas - wrestling, stand up striking, and on the ground. Bisping has been able to isolate guys in their weak realm, and beat them."
Despite their war of words, during interviews, conference calls, and on Twitter, Rockhold clearly respects Bisping as a fighter. If surfer-turned-fighter believes Bisping is elite, he's certain that he himself is simply the best in the division, however.
"With me, he's running into a problem," Rockhold explains.
"I'm better than him in every area. I'm one of the most well-rounded fighters out there. I think this is a good stylistic match up for me. I believe that I'm the best fighter in the division, and I can't wait to show everyone how much I've improved, and where I'm at, at this point in my career."
"The Count" seems to relish his role as a villain, and has told all who will listen that his barrage of trash talk is getting to Rockhold. The San Jose fighter maintains that Bisping is sorely mistaken, if he believes that he's unfocused in any way.
"I’m completely focused," he says.
"I keep hear him mentioning that he's getting under my skin. If anything, I think he's the one who is riled up. On all the conference calls, interviews together, and things like that, I've been pretty calm. He keeps getting upset and raising his voice. I think I've been cool, calm and collected. I'm very confident going into this fight. I'm just going to relax and do my thing."

UFC's Fabricio Werdum cares about the belt, not the opponent
UFC heavyweight title challenger Fabricio Werdum (18-5-1) found out early Tuesday evening that the champion Cain Velasquez (13-1) was out of their scheduled Nov. 15 title fight in Mexico City. That, was the (quite) bad news.
The good news, for Werdum, was that he'd still fight for UFC gold. Former K-1 Grand Prix kickboxing world champ Mark Hunt (10-8-1) would replace Velasquez, and he and Werdum would now fight for an interim belt.
The Brazilian - who has been in Mexico preparing for Velasquez for some time already - told Thomas Gerbasi in a recent interview that he's just as primed to fight Hunt as he was to fight the Mexican-American. “The important thing for me is that I’m ready to fight,” Werdum said.
“The object was never Cain Velasquez; it’s always been the belt. Since I got back to the UFC, it’s been about getting the belt and it doesn’t matter from who. I just want the belt and I’m ready to fight anybody. Of course, I’m a little bit sad for Cain and about not fighting him right now, but I’m ready to fight for the belt.”
The 37 year-old has won four straight fights, and seven out of his last eight. In fact, few top heavyweights have been as consistent over the past five years as he has been.
So, as long as he's fighting for a championship, Werdum says he's happy. Of course, he faces a quite different fight against Hunt than he would have against Velasquez.
For more on that matchup, check out our early break down of Werdum vs. Hunt. "Vai Cavalo" understands quite clearly that he and his team will now suddenly have to put together a different approach and strategy, to beat Hunt.
“They’re two completely different fighters,” Werdum said of Velasquez and Hunt.
“We all know that Mark Hunt is a really good striker, so of course I have to change up the game plan a little bit, but I’ve known Mark Hunt since the beginning, since the K-1 days, so I’ve watched and admired him for a long time. We’re going to do a great fight and put on a great show.”
Who's your early pick to walk away with the interim heavyweight belt, Hunt or Werdum? Let us know why in the comments section!

1/7 AFTERNOON UPDATE: NAC says Jones shouldn't have been tested for cocaine; UFC Fight Night 61 shakeup; more
![]() |
1/7 AFTERNOON UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site this afternoon:
-After initially saying that the Nevada commission would be addressing the anomaly of Jon Jones' out of competition drug test, NAC director Bob Bennett has clarified that the commission wasn't supposed to test Jones for cocaine in the first place due to that not being on the banned list out of competition. Head to the mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for more from Bennett on the Jones situation with further analysis.
-Reebok is standing behind Jones after his failed drug test for cocaine, and says they're in full support of him as he enters rehab. More on that on the mobile site now.
-There have been some changes to a couple of events next month. An injury to Glover Teixeria has brought a shift to the UFC Fight Night 61 card, as UFC 184's Frank Mir vs. Bigfoot Silva fight has been shifted into that main event. More on the switch on the mobile site now.
-Four fighters on the UFC 182 card are out of action up to six months, at least according to the Nevada Athletic Commission. Head to the mobile site for the full list of suspensions out of last weekend's event.
-In our morning poll, we asked readers whether Jon Jones deserved further punishment for his positive drug test for cocaine. 39% think he should be stripped of the title outright, 38% believe a fine and/or suspension is in order, and the final 23% don't think anything else is necessary.

Frankie Edgar says Conor McGregor push is no surprise
Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (17-4-1) is set to face Cub Swanson (21-5) next month in what looked like a No. 1 contender's fight until UFC president Dana White all but dismissed the pair as potential repeat opponents for title-holder Jose Aldo (24-1), and lined up Conor McGregor as the likely next title challenger if the champ gets past Chad Mendes (16-1) later this month. Edgar lost a decision to Aldo in 2013, and Swanson was quickly KO'd by "Scarface" back in 2009.
Since that time, Swanson has won six straight, and Edgar has won two in a row. McGregor has won his first four UFC fights and became a fast global star in the promotion.
It's because of that rapid rise to fame that Edgar understands White and the UFC's motivation in pushing the brash Irishman ahead of the title challenger's pack.
"It doesn't surprise me," Edgar told ESPN.com in a recent interview. "As a promoter, it's probably the smart thing to do. He's got a lot of buzz going. Why have him lose before they can make money on that fight?"
Of course, Edgar wants another crack at Aldo and the featherweight title, should he get past Swanson on Nov. 22. Don't expect "The Answer" to do much more than get back to work if he doesn't get the opportunity, however.
"I do want to fight for the title after I beat Cub, but if I have to fight somebody else, what am I going to do?" he asked. "I can't sit around and feel sorry for myself. I have to go to work and get it done."
As for how he thinks he himself would fare against the "Notorious" McGregor, Edgar was succinct. I know I match up well against him," he said.
Would you rather see McGregor face the winner of Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes II, instead of having Edgar or Swanson vie for the featherweight title? Let us know in the comments section!
