Silly Season Update: Aoyama Confirmed At BQR, McPhee Gets Permanent Moto3 Ride, Miller To RTG

As the Grand Prix paddock heads to Valencia to assemble for the last race of the year, the rider line ups are starting to be finalized for the 2013 season. The MotoGP line up is drawing very close to completion, with just a few CRT seats remaining to be filled. Today it was confirmed that Hiroshi Aoyama has officially signed to race with the Avintia Blusens team in MotoGP, taking the place of Colombian rider Yonny Hernandez. The move had been anticipated for some time, but a press release was issued today formalizing the situation. Aoyama will line up alongside Hector Barbera in the BQR team, both men continuing to contest a Kawasaki-powered, FTR-built CRT machine in the MotoGP class.

Rossi and Hayden Prepare for Season Finale at Valencia

Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, Phillip Island Race 2012
After a much-deserved weekend off, the Ducati Team heads to Valencia for the season’s fourth race to be held on Spanish soil and, more importantly, the final round of the eighteen-event MotoGP championship.

The team and both of its riders will be looking to make up for last year’s race, at which Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden were both taken out by another rider in the first turn. Since then, the circuit has been resurfaced, so it will be important to see how the tyres perform and to adjust bike setup accordingly. The event invariably attracts a large, passionate crowd, and the stadium-like backdrop makes for an exciting atmosphere.

Following the Valencia finale, the MotoGP riders and teams will enjoy just one day off before they take part in a test at the same track on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Valentino Rossi
“Valencia definitely isn’t one of my favourite circuits, apart from the fact that it’s in Spain, which always has a great atmosphere. It’s a ‘Micky Mouse’ track that’s small for MotoGP and therefore difficult and tricky. There are a bunch of left hand corners, and I normally prefer those that go to the right. Anyway, we’ll see. The asphalt was redone and that should have improved both the grip and the bumps. It will be a strange weekend that should be challenging for a few different reasons, but we’ll do our best.”

Nicky Hayden
“Valencia is a track and a race that I like a lot. It’s the last round of the year, so the atmosphere is good and everyone always seems to have a little something extra. The track has been resurfaced since we were last there, and it was certainly due. We’ll have to see how it is with tyres when we get there, as new surfaces can be hard on rubber. We’ll need something that has good endurance on the left but also retains enough heat on the right. Smoother tracks are normally better for our bike. One thing we need to do better than in recent races is to make bigger improvements with the bike over the course of the weekend. My team has been working so hard all year, and I really want to end the season with a solid race for them.”

Karel Abraham gets a superb start and battles with Rossi and Hayden in the race

Karel Abraham Phillip Island 2012
Czech motorcycle rider Karel Abraham has bagged another finish in the top ten elite in the MotoGP class at the Australian Grand Prix. He finished the race in ninth place, after having battled for much of its duration in a group with Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, both riding more advanced factory machines. Abaja crossed the line fifty-two seconds behind race winner Casey Stoner. Finishing second was Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo – enough to secure his title as World Champion. On behalf of the entire Cardion AB Motoracing team – we congratulate him!

Karel Abraham
“I’m really happy about the race: we’ve finished in the Top 10 yet again – which also means a fair amount of points. On the other hand, I also have to feel a bit frustrated, because it could have worked out a lot better. I had a great start and even got in front of Nicky Hayden, after which I managed to hold my position in the group between Valentino and Hayden. I felt really sure of the bike for the first time in ages, and even thought I could overtake Valentino. But from about the twelfth lap the bike started to play up, Nicky passed me, and both of them started to pull away. Whilst that was a bit of a shame, we can still regard this race as being a really good result.”

Marco Grana, Chief Mechanic Cardion AB Motoracing
“Of course we’re really satisfied with ninth place. Karel put in a really good performance, he rode the seventh fastest time for a single lap, and that’s a fantastic result! For a large part of the race Karel was able to ride in contention with Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, both on factory bikes. Unfortunately, the bike then started to develop a few problems: the rear end started to slide and Karel began to fall behind Valentino. At the moment we have no idea why the motorcycle started behaving differently during the course of the race; the rear tire was still in an OK condition, and yet it was spinning far too much and Karel was losing time when accelerating.  In contrast to Malaysia, where we all felt a bit down after the race, now we are looking forward to Valencia, and we’re confident that we’ll have another good race.”

Guest Blog: Mat Oxley: Jorge Lorenzo – as cool as it gets

MotoMatters.com is delighted to feature the work of iconic MotoGP writer Mat Oxley. Oxley is a former racer, TT winner and highly respected author of biographies of world champions Mick Doohan and Valentino Rossi, and currently writes for Motor Sport Magazine, where he is MotoGP correspondent. We will be featuring sections of Oxley's blogs, posted in full on the Motor Sport Magazine website, over the coming months.

You’ve got to hand it to Jorge Lorenzo.

During 2012 he was the rock in a rough sea. This has been a stormy year of dizzying change in MotoGP: the arrival of CRT bikes, Casey Stoner retiring, Valentino Rossi changing jobs once again and finally the Bridgepoint bombshell. All year, only one thing stayed truly consistent: Lorenzo.

His results at the 16 races he finished on his way to the title were stunning – never outside the top two. First at Qatar, then second, second, first, first, first, second, first, second, second, second, first, second, second, second, second.

That kind of regularity is unique in the modern era and Lorenzo is certainly a unique racer. He has a very individual approach to the sport and he rides in a very special way.

Crutchlow and Dovizioso ready for podium attack in Australia

Cal Crutchlow Phillip Island Qualifying 2012

Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso will start tomorrow's AirAsia Australian Grand Prix from the second row of the grid, with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 riders confident they can both battle for the podium in the penultimate round of the 2012 World Championship.

Still not back to 100% fitness after being struck down by a severe fever and bout of bronchitis heading into this weekend's race at the fast and flowing Phillip Island track, Crutchlow came close to securing a brilliant eighth front row start of the season. In cool, cloudy and windy conditions, the British rider spent the majority of the session concentrating on improving the race set-up of his YZR-M1 machine.

Crutchlow was satisfied with his fast and consistent pace on a used soft Bridgestone rear tyre, which bodes well for a strong challenge in the latter stages of tomorrow's 27-lap race.  Crutchlow managed to set a best time of 1.30.763 that left him just 0.188s behind in-form Dani Pedrosa in third position.

Andrea Dovizioso also tested the endurance of Bridgestone's soft rear tyre option over a long run and he was happy with his speed and consistency.

A lap of 1.31.200 put the Italian inside the top three in the early part of the session. But when he switched to a new soft rear tyre to push for a second successive front row start, he couldn't find the same confident feeling and he secured the final place on the second row in sixth.

Cal Crutchlow 4th 1.30.763 – 26 laps:
‘We made some good improvements to the bike today and fortunately I am feeling better too. I'm still not 100% but I have been resting as much as possible and I am improving each day. It was good to have the bike feeling better today as well, although I wasn't pushing too hard for the whole session. I used an old soft rear tyre that I'd run in this morning's practice just to check my pace at the start of the session. I'm really happy because my times were fast and consistent even when the rear tyre had over 30 laps on it. That bodes well for the race tomorrow and I'm confident if I can run the same pace I'll be in the podium hunt. On a new soft tyre I think I could have gone a bit faster but I got held up. Fourth is still a good result and I'm looking forward to a good battle in t omorrow's race, though based on what we've seen so far, Casey is on another planet and nobody will get close to him.”

Andrea Dovizioso 6th 1.31.200 – 26 laps:
“The session started very well and I was quickly into a fast pace that put me inside the top three. My race pace is around the mid-31s and that should be competitive enough to be battling for a podium tomorrow. The problem came when I tried to improve my time on a new soft rear tyre. Immediately it was sliding around a lot and it didn't have the grip I was expecting. I just didn't have a good feeling and it was impossible to push like I wanted. We need to analyse what might have caused that, so considering I couldn't go any faster on a new soft rear tyre at the end of the session, I'm pretty pleased to still be in the top six. We have improved the bike in every session and I am confident I will be battling for the podium.”
