Bridgepoint Announces MotoGP And World Superbike Series To Be "Brought Together"

Bridgepoint, the private equity organization has today announced that it has brought MotoGP and World Superbike, the two motorcycle racing series it owns, under a single umbrella organization. The reorganization will see Dorna Sports become the parent organization for both series, though Infront will operate as an independent entity and continue to organize World Superbike under its own banner. Infront has also been named as "marketing advisor and global advisor" for both MotoGP and WSBK.

The implications of this announcement are huge, but not immediately clear. The logic behind the move is impeccable: the two series are spending too much of their time competing against each other instead of working together to promote the sport of motorcycle racing. By combining their marketing efforts, the hope is that both series will be made stronger.

Pedrosa back on top with Aragon win

Dani Pedrosa kept his MotoGP title hopes alive with a dominant victory over world championship leader Jorge Lorenzo in Sunday's Aragon Grand Prix.

The race looked to be shaping up to be a repeat of the Brno battle - decided in Pedrosa's favour at the final turn - as the pair broke quickly away from the rest of the field.

But victory was effectively decided when Pedrosa passed Lorenzo on lap 5 of 23, with Lorenzo then losing touch after a near highside on the exit of turn one. Pedrosa won by 6.4s.

Pedrosa's fourth victory of the season has trimmed Lorenzo's title lead - which had mushroomed after Pedrosa's Misano disaster - to 33 points, with four rounds and 100 points remaining.

While the two Spaniards maintained position for much of the race, the fight for third entertained the fans right to the end.

Initially a four-way contest, rookie Stefan Bradl made an early exit when he lost the front of his LCR Honda. That left an all-Yamaha contest between Ben Spies, Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow.

Spies had dropped away as the last lap began, but with Tech 3 riders Dovizioso and Crutchlow still fighting furiously.

Crutchlow's final challenge was a block pass on Dovizioso on the entry to the back straight, but Dovizioso squared-off the turn and rode by the Englishman on the exit to claim his sixth rostrum of the year.

Alvaro Bautista was unable to repeat his Misano podium heroics for Gresini Honda, but made solid progress to rise from twelfth on the grid to sixth, some 14s behind Spies.

Jonathan Rea's second MotoGP appearance, in place of Casey Stoner at Repsol Honda, saw the WSBK star start and finish in seventh place - one position higher than he had managed at Misano.

Factory Ducati team-mates Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi both suffered off-track incidents.

Rossi brushed the side of Rea under-braking at the end of the back straight on the opening lap, sending the Italian down an escape road and leaving him in last place.

The seven time MotoGP champion then worked his way back up the order to eighth at the flag, despite a further off track excursion.

Hayden paid a higher price.

The American suffered a nasty accident when he ran off track at the final turn, possibly after saving a low-side, then couldn't stop and slammed into a tyre barrier - launching the American over the top and onto the road on the other side.

Hayden, who suffered a concussion and fractured hand at Indianapolis, was taken to the Medical Centre for checks where he has later declared 'ok'.

Karel Abraham (Cardion AB), Aleix Espargaro (Aspar CRT), Randy de Puniet (Aspar CRT), Hector Barbera (Pramac), Yonny Hernandez (Avintia CRT), James Ellison (PBM CRT) and Michele Pirro (Gresini CRT) completed the scorers.

MotoGP now heads for flyaway events - in Japan, Malaysia and Australia - before returning to Spain for the Valencia season finale.

Stoner hopes to return for the Motegi round, on October 12-14.

Difficult Race, but Positive Signs for Ducati Team at Aragon

Valentino Rossi Aragon 2012

Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi both had costly off-track excursions in the early stages of the Aragon GP, with the former crashing upon striking a tyre wall and the latter having to fight through the pack after re-entering the circuit and completing the first lap in last place.

Fortunately, there were no serious consequences from the American’s frightening incident, which occurred after exiting the track at same point where he had crashed yesterday. This time, he stayed upright until striking the wall and flying over it. Hayden was initially transported to the circuit medical centre and then to the Hospital de Alcañiz for precautionary checks. He has been released and plans to compete in the next round, the Japanese Grand Prix.

As for Valentino Rossi, he went off the track on the first lap to avoid contact with Jonathan Rea, and after re-entering in last place, he had to work his way forward. The Italian had a good pace for the entire race, making up twelve positions to take the chequered flag in eighth place.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 8th
“It’s a shame about the mistake on the first lap. I was a bit faster than Rea, and when we spread out on the straightaway, and he braked a bit earlier, I went to the right. He couldn’t see me and pushed me close to the curb, and I went straight to avoid him. I should have gone to the inside, not the outside. Without that incident, I think I could have fought with Bautista for sixth place, which was our potential at this track today. In fact, things went better in the race than in practice, when we suffered a lot on acceleration both in the wet and in the dry. We made some changes after the warm-up, and that helped us to lap consistently at a decent pace for the whole race, without using up the tyres too much. This is a positive sign, considering that we were also able to do that at Misano. There’s still much work to do, but it’s also true that for us this was probably the most difficult track among those left on the calendar, so we hope to be more competitive at Motegi in two weeks.”

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) DNF
“I spun the tyre a lot on the start but was able to get past Rossi and Johnny Rea. The rear brake wasn’t working great from about halfway around the lap, maybe because I overheated it. I was trying to keep the group in front of me in sight, but I pushed the front in the last turn. I was able to pick it up, but I came up on that wall really fast. I thought I might hit it headfirst if I jumped off, so I let go right before impact. I’m sorry to tear up the bike, but I’m thankful for great safety equipment and to be okay.”

Bridgestone Press Release: Masao Azuma Discusses Tricky Track Conditions At Misano

Bridgestone issued its customary post-race press release debrief after Misano, in which Bridgestone's chief engineer Masao Azuma discusses how the weather affected the condition of the track and tire choice at Misano:

Misano MotoGP™ debrief with Masao Azuma

Wednesday 19 September 2012
Bridgestone slick compounds available: Front: Soft, Medium, Hard. Rear: Medium, Hard (Asymmetric)
Bridgestone wet tyre compounds available: Hard (Main), Soft (Alternative)

This year’s San Marino and Rimini Grand Prix was won by Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo who continued his excellent record at a circuit where he has never finished off the podium in his MotoGP™ career.

Conditions this year at Misano varied considerably over the race weekend. Friday and Saturday were affected by rain and wind, though a change in the weather on Saturday afternoon ensured that qualifying, morning warm up and the race took place in dry conditions. The limited dry running time before Sunday meant tyre choice for the race was the same for every rider on the grid, with the softer rear and harder front slick being selected by all twenty-one riders lining up on the grid.
