WALKER: Team Curran MMA Training Blog Week 3

This past week has been my most difficult one so far in the gym. Suffering injuries in general sucks, but it's even more difficult when you're trying to learn mixed martial arts. Unfortunately I suffered a broken toe this past week, and it will keep me out of Muay Thai until at least next Monday. It's not fun limping around the house in constant pain, but if I said that a little bit of pain wasn't worth the good that I'm doing by body and the fun that I'm having I'd be a liar. Sure, the soreness comes and goes, and the throb in my right foot is constantly annoying me and affecting my general comfort, but I'm down a total of 18 pounds since beginning at the gym. That's an average of four and a half pounds per week, not too shabby if I may say so myself.

The treadmill is still easy for me to grapple with for an hour, I hop on and plug in my head phones and continue to raise the speed until I get to the mid 3's (miles per hour) and keep moving until the hour and the five minute cool down are over. I am luckily still able to participate in jiu-jitsu should I see fit, so it will keep me entertained until my toe gets the ok from a doctor to start kicking people and pads again. I set a record high yesterday, broken toe and all, burning nearly 600 calories on the treadmill, which sets a nice personal goal for when I return to the gym tonight, however the soreness from not making it to the gym all weekend is certainly setting in. Taking a 48 hour layoff from working out and then going back at full blast right away probably wasn't the best idea, but it sure felt good to hop on that scale and see a lower number than last time. It's also been cool to watch Mark Hominick doing some pad work with Jeff Curran – two of the greats working together to succeed.

Most of my past week was spent doing some work for Brian Butler and Suckerpunch Entertainment, filming some training for them to put together in videos, which was actually pretty cool; getting right up next to the cage during sparring and grappling was about as real as it gets. Unfortunately the video quality wound up being too low resolution for use, but I still had a good time helping out some of the people I highly respect in this business. Many fighters are preparing for upcoming fights at the gym, Joey Diehl and Vince Ramos will be fighting for XFO on April 13th here in Chicago, Felice Herrig will be fighting for XFC in Tennessee also on April 13th, and Jeff Curran will of course be fighting Johnny Eduardo at UFC on Fuel 3. So being able to see how they prepare really shows me that the amount of work they're putting into a training camp is more than I do in a month of classes and working out. It's a grueling pace that they have to keep in order to be prepared for each and every fight.

So there hasn't been much else to report, but my conclusion is going to be a forewarning for all of you that this may be my last training blog for a couple of weeks. My wife is due to give birth approximately next Tuesday, which means pretty much any day here, and once she gives birth I will be taking a couple of weeks off from the gym to help her recuperate and get to know my new bundle of joy. If she makes it past her due date, you will be seeing week four this time next week, if not – you'll be seeing week four sometime towards the end of April. I will be continuing my training blog until you guys get sick of it, and in the meantime I have a couple more columns coming forth this week. Hope you all have a safe week, and a Happy Easter!
