L.A. firefighter arrested for fighting MMA bouts while on workman’s comp

Los Angeles firefighter Raphael Davis was arrested for suspicion of insurance fraud after investigators noticed he competed in seven MMA bouts while out on workman's compensation. L.A. Weekly reported that he could see up to five years in jail if he is convicted.

Though officials did not release what sort of injuries kept Davis out of work, logic says it's unlikely that an injury that would keep him from the firehouse would allow him to fight. Davis, who has an overall record of 12-2, went 6-1 while on leave. Two of those fights were for M-1 and another two were for Bellator.

How did Davis not think he was going to be caught? Fights are uploaded to YouTube and other video sites all the time. Wins and losses from most pro events are reported to Sherdog for their invaluable Fight Finder database. It didn't take a great investigator to bust this case wide open. In fact, Brenda Walsh used pretty much the same methods on "Beverly Hills, 90210" when she found a woman suing her family for whiplash Jazzercising in her living room.

Dana White says he's "too upset" to talk about Alistair Overeem situation, letting due process happen with NSAC

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WhiteDana_TB150_15.jpg
UFC President Dana White is fairly open on most subjects when he speaks with the media, but the current situation with Alistair Overeem's positive drug test threatening the UFC 146 main event is something of a sore subject for him.

Speaking with reporters after UFC on Fuel 2 in Sweden on Saturday, White's frustrations bled through as he tried to avoid the subject.

"I will snap and freak out and I don't want to do that," White said when the topic was broached (transcribed by MMAFighting.com). "I don't want to talk about it. I'm too upset about it. Seriously, I can't talk about it."

Still, while he's cleary angry about the situation, he knows Overeem has his day with the Nevada State Athletic Commission later this month, and for now he's just letting the process play out.

"Everybody gets due process," he said. "Alistair Overeem will have his due process with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. We'll see what happens and we'll go from there. When it all goes down, somebody else will speak about this. Not me."

Penick's Analysis: From the tone of the comments I'd venture to guess that White doesn't necessarily believe whatever argument Overeem is going to be presenting to the NSAC. If it is TRT, then as White said initially it would be a situation where he feels Overeem lied to them by saying he was completely clean. If this wasn't disclosed to them previously, it's going to be hard for White or Lorenzo Fertitta to really take Overeem at his word, but they'll still wait for the commission to make an official ruling before making a determination on UFC 146.

Picture of the day: UFC 146 heavyweights gather for drug tests

Six fighters from the all-heavyweight main card of UFC 146 gathered in Las Vegas for a press conference on Tuesday. According to HD Net's Ron Kruck, the Nevada Athletic Commission took advantage of all six being in town by stopping them for a pre-fight drug test.

Roy Nelson (right), who will fight Antonio Silva (left) had a picture snapped with his opponent and heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos as they waited for, as Nelson put it, "results from our pee tests." Dos Santos will fight Alistair Overeem to defend his belt for the first time since winning it from Cain Velasquez.

UFC's Alistair Overeem breaks his silence - sort of - confident bout with JDS at UFC 146 will happen

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

OvereemAlistair_180_27.jpg
Alistair Overeem broke his silence - sort of - on Thursday's edition of MMA Uncensored Live on Spike TV, but he didn't address his current predicament with the Nevada State Athletic Commission or his failed pre-fight drug test for an elevated T/E ratio.

Instead, Overeem talked like someone who was confident he'd be fighting on May 26 in a pre-recorded interview with the show's producer. In the interview, he would only discuss his matchup with Junior dos Santos, and very much seems to believe the fight's happening.

"I am bigger, I am stronger, I am better in the stand-up and I'm better on the ground," he said. "So for me, I don't think about what he is going to do to me. I'm thinking about what I am going to do to him, and I am only thinking about what I am going to do to him. I am going to be ready wherever the fight takes me. I do prefer to strike, I do prefer a knockout over a submission win but I'm going to be ready for anything."

"You know I'm strong, I'm fast, I feel good. I'm going to get this guy, I'm going to beat him. Nothing scares me the most about Junior dos Santos. Everything he's doing, I've seen it before. I'm not worried about it, I've experienced it all. There's no fear, there's only two things – trained and untrained and when I step into the Octagon on May 26 I'm going to be trained."

After his quick segment, hosts Craig Carton, Mike Straka, and Nate Quarry proceeded to not buy any excuse he could present, and compared older and newer photos of Overeem to outright say he's been on performance enhancing drugs during his career.

Frank Mir was then interviewed on the show, and while he's hoping to get himself in line for a title shot if Overeem is out, he's still withholding judgment until Overeem appears in front of the NSAC later this month.

"As of right now I'm still training for Cain," Mir said. "Obviously like everyone else I've seen in the background that there's a possibility that Overeem's not going to be able to make the fight on the 26th and I want to make sure I'm in a situation where I can jump in."

"I'm very much on the point of innocent until proven guilty. If he has a hearing and comes in and speaks, I want to hear what he has to say. All six of us were tested that day that were on that stage, he had some complications with his test obviously; give the man a chance to speak about it."

Penick's Analysis: Overeem's demeanor makes it seem like he believes he'll fight, but I'm still very skeptical that's going to happen. Perhaps I'm not being cynical enough and am of the belief that the commission is not going to let him slide with a TRT defense this close to the fight, but I just don't know right now. He hasn't really given anything in this interview, and the hosts of the show ripped into him right after the interview, but we'll have to see what his explanation will be with the NSAC later this mont.

Marco "Sic" Simoncelli Killed in MotoGP Crash

MotoGP has lost a star: Marco Simoncelli
Friends all over the world are morning the death of Italian Superbike racer Marco Simoncelli, who died in a crash Sunday in the first lap of the MotoGP race in Sepang, Malaysian.

The 24-year-old Honda rider, affectionately known as "Sic" lost control and veered across the track into the path of riders Colin Edwards and Simoncelli's compatriot Valentino Rossi. His helmet was knocked off in the collision that left him face-down and motionless on the asphalt track.

The race at Sepang International Circuit was immediately red-flagged and later cancelled.

Marco died of head, neck and chest injuries, and cardiac arrest at 4:56pm, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011. With only one remaining race in Spain left in the MotoGP Championship, he was in fierce competition for the top position with Casey Stoner, who is now the undisputed 2011 world champion.

Ironically, his career ended at the same track that was the scene of his 250cc world championship victory in 2008.

American Honda team racer, Colin Edwards reportedly suffered a separated shoulder as a result of the crash, when he fell on the track Sunday. Rossi, who rides for Ducati, made only brief contact with the bikes on the track. He was uninjured but emotionally devastated by the loss.

"Sic for me was like a youngest brother. So strong on track and so sweet in the normal life. I will miss him a lot," - Valentino Rossi said in the early hours of Monday morning, Malaysian time via his official Twitter account @ValeYellow46.

The last fatal crash in the world motorcycling championship was last year when Japan's Shoya Tomizawa was killed. MotoGP is the world´s premier motorcycling championship, with a season of 18 Grands Prix in 13 countries bringing together the world´s top motorcycle manufacturers.
