Today, the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) MMA promotion and the NBC Sports Group announced that they had reached a multi-year agreement that will extend and expand the major network's involvement with the sport. WSOF has partnered with NBC for the past year and a half, with its events largely airing on NBC cable networks.
Under the new deal, however, WSOF events will air on the main NBC broadcast network. The first-ever live NBC MMA broadcast will be of the July 5 WSOF 11 card, featuring a main event between undefeated lightweights Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell.
NBC will then televise WSOF's year-end card on Dec. 27. In all, 14 WSOF events will be televised somewhere in the NBC Sports Group universe in 2014.
Retired fighter and WSOF president Ray Sefo, speaking with Cagewriter about the announcement Tuesday afternoon from New Zealand, said that getting his fight cards on "big" NBC was always the goal for the promotion. "Absolutely. We always wanted to get on the biggest platform there is," he said.
"When negotiations began and we were going back and forth, that become a possibility. From day one we had wanted that but we didn't have any history as a promotion at the time, in terms of putting on shows so we really had to convince [NBC] that we were capable of putting one of the best shows in the world, on... Obviously, we’ve proven ourselves as a fight league to get this contract extended is huge for us huge for our fighters."
NBC's president of programming Jon Miller echoed Sefo's sentiments in a statement, saying that he and the network were "excited to broaden" their partnership with the fledgling MMA organization.

Diego Sanchez may soon have his first fight in more than a year. 
UFC lightweight James Krause targeted former WEC champion Jamie Varner's lead, lower leg from the start of their UFC 173 main card bout Saturday night and it paid off with a TKO win after the first round. Varner absorbed a few leg kicks to his ankle before collapsing to the ground.
Varner appeared to lose the ability to stabilize himself on his feet due to what both he and UFC president Dana White would later say was his broken ankle. Despite the injury, Varner fought on through the first round, falling over and over, but swinging hard for the knockout during whatever fleeting moments he was able to stand on his feet.

At that point, Varner told the referee that his ankle was broken and the fight was soon after stopped.
Krause has now won eight out of his last nine fights. Varner has lost three straight and four out his last five.

Fans are invited to pre-event festivities for the next major UFC event, UFC on FOX 5. 
Erick Silva is recognized as one of the very best young welterweights in the UFC but has had mixed results in his past six fights, going 3-3. So, when he got the offer to face the surging Matt Brown, who has ridden a six-fight win streak to the top of the rankings, the Brazilian didn’t hesitate to accept.
“I accepted right away,” Silva tells Cagewriter.
“After my last fight [a KO win over Takenori Sato in February], it was one of the first times when I just kept training. I was already motivated to fight again when my manager called and told me about the offer to fight Brown.”
Brown was originally scheduled to fight former champion Carlos Condit in March before an injured back forced him out of the contest. Now, in his return bout, he’ll take on Silva. “The Immortal” has admitted that someone like Silva – who is as good as anyone in the world, but also doesn’t have name recognition yet – wasn’t his top choice to fight next.
Brown isn’t in the habit of turning down fights, either, however, and so he too was happy to get back into the Octagon. Silva doesn’t act as if he’s insulted by Brown’s words.
The black belt likes the matchup for himself and believes he and Brown’s similar styles will make for an exciting fight. “It’s ok that he’s disappointed to fight me,” Silva says.
“Every fighter expects to fight someone with a better ranking. It’s normal that he was disappointed but I’m really happy that he accepted it because it will be a great fight. We are both aggressive fighters and no matter the result, the audience will have a great time.”
“Indio” hopes to have a great time himself, of course. Should Silva managed to stop Brown’s momentum, he will deserve a top ten ranking.
Silva admits that beating Brown would be a boon to his career and ranking, but also clarifies that he fights for himself, not for titles. “Of course, this is an idea in my head because if I beat a higher-ranked guy, it puts me in great position to for the title. But, I’m really calm right now,” he says.
“My main focus is the fight with Matt Brown. It doesn’t matter if I fight for a belt or not, I just have to win.”
Winning may be especially hard for Silva because he’ll be fighting on Brown’s home court, so to speak, in Ohio. Silva himself has fought for the UFC in his native Brazil against visitors so he understands the ins and outs of home field advantage.
That said, he knows that he’ll feel right at home inside the cage once the door closes, no matter what city or country he’s in. “I’m cool with that,” Silva says of fighting near Brown’s home.
“The audience can influence things and I know people will be cheering for Matt Brown. But, when the door is closed, there will only be two fighters in there and everybody else doesn’t matter. “

The results of Vitor Belfort’s surprise February drug test will not remain secret for much longer. The number one middleweight contender has not fought in the United States since 2011 but after the UFC made it clear that they would try to match up “The Phenom” with champion Chris Weidman in Las Vegas in the coming months, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) surprised the fighter with a drug test in February.
The results of that test, which presumably tested to see if Belfort’s testosterone levels were within normal and allowable levels, in addition to testing for banned substances, have so far been kept secret. Belfort’s June 17 licensing hearing, however, will reveal the results, according to NSAC executive director Bob Bennett.
“The test results will be made public, yes,” Bennett tells Cagewriter.
“If Mr. Belfort appears at his hearing, which I’m sure he will, the commissioners will get to question him about any topics they want and I’m sure that will come up.”
Belfort submitted to the surprise test back in February but has refused to release the results. Belfort did not have a current license to fight in Nevada at the time and the NSAC said that it could only release the results itself once Belfort applied for a license.
After seeing the results, and after the NSAC banned the use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which Belfort has used for years, the Brazilian opted to not apply for a fighter’s license in the state and was removed from the scheduled May title fight against Weidman by the UFC.
This all became immediately material once more when the UFC opted to remove Wanderlei Silva from his scheduled July 5 Vegas fight against Chael Sonnen because of reported recent issues the “The Axe Murderer” himself has had with the NSAC and replace him with Belfort. The NSAC is allowed to test all licensed athletes year-round; they just rarely do because of budget constraints.
The NSAC is also allowed to offer voluntary tests to non-licensed fighters, year-round, as they did with Belfort. Fighters can refuse voluntary drug tests by the NSAC, but they can then be expected to have that refusal come up and be considered in a hearing should they ever apply for a license in Nevada.
Belfort may not have been licensed in Nevada at the time of his surprise test last winter, but his promoter had plans to have him fight in the state soon. Additionally, Belfort tested positive for a banned steroid back in 2006.
Belfort’s doctors say that he suffers from hypogonadism, a condition where his body does not naturally produce normal levels of testosterone. So, international commissions have granted him therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) to undergo TRT in recent years.
However, past steroid abuse has often been linked to hypogonadism and so since Belfort was a known steroid user from his failed test in 2006, it seemed unlikely that he’d receive a TUE for the therapy from more respected and established athletic commissions in the U.S. The thinking goes that Belfort, a phenomenal athlete who has competed in MMA at the highest levels since his teens, was not born with hypogonadism – he may have developed it as a result of past steroid use, which caused his body to stop naturally producing testosterone given the presence of artificial ‘t’ being pumped into his body.
Fighters who were granted TUEs for TRT use were still required to stay within testosterone to epitestosterone ratio levels designated as normal by the NSAC all year round, not just on nights of fights. However, the NSAC rarely tested fighters out of competition to see if they were truly maintaining normal testosterone levels or to determine if they were abusing TRT and conducting training camps with elevated levels before cycling off or to a lower level of therapy in order to be within the allowed range by fight night.
Belfort himself has openly said that he believes “everyone is using during the camp,” but simply cycle off in order to beat fight night tests. Since submitting to his surprise test in February, fans have wondered if the reason Belfort then decided not to release the results and then pull out of a title fight was because he had failed the test in some way.
Was Belfort once more caught with a banned substance in his system? Was he perhaps caught training with elevated levels of testosterone due to his TRT use at the time?
Or, did Belfort keep the test results secret and pull out of a title fight for other reasons and he, in fact, had passed the surprise test? To this day, very few know the answer to that.
That will change June 17 at his licensing hearing in Nevada.

The question was an afterthought. Will Brooks was days away from returning to Bellator for a warm-up fight before taking on either Eddie Alvarez or Michael Chandler for the lightweight title at a later date.
Alvarez and Chandler were set to face-off on the same Bellator 120 card Brooks was on the undercard of. Having won the lightweight tournament, Brooks had earned a title shot but had it delayed to satisfy the promotion's desire to see a trilogy bout between the champion Alvarez and Chandler.
We asked Brooks who he'd rather fight and instead of giving a variation of the standard fighter answer of, "I don't care. I'll be ready for whomever," Brooks pointedly targeted Chandler - and, by extension, the entire Bellator promotion. “I think I have everything it takes to beat Chandler. I really want to create some change. Bellator does a good job of promoting a handful of guys, a handful of favorites,” Brooks told us.
He then went on to call out the promoter for selectively promoting certain guys over others saying that he and the fans were tired of it. Brooks, of course, would end up getting his wish when he filled-in for the injured Alvarez, and fought Chandler at Bellator 120.
Brooks shocked the world by beating Chandler in a tough fight. All of the sudden, Bellator went from having an apparently discontented contender calling them on their promotional inconsistencies and shenanigans to having one of their champions do so.
The thing is, though, that Brooks says he doesn't actually have a problem with Bellator. "I don’t have any issue with Bellator or [CEO] Bjorn [Rebney]," the fighter tells Cagewriter this week.
"They’ve done me solid, taken care of me financially, in terms of making sure I’m always fighting or giving me a couple extra tickets to events. So, I just want to clear that up."
That the fighter has no complaints about his own personal treatment does not mean that he hasn't observed things that bother him, however. "What I was trying to do was speak as a fan and say that, from a fan’s point of view, I personally believe that there are some changes that need to be made in the organization," he explains.
"Changes in the way the tournament gets backed up sometimes, or at least the guys who win them. Changes as far as how some guys get promoted and how some guys are being paid. Me being a fan of the sport and seeing Bellator as an organization that has an ability to get bigger than what it is, I just want it to reach that level. Like with the UFC before it got large – fans could look at it, and say, ‘if the UFC made such and such changes, it could get big.' Same thing with the MLB or NFL at one point in time."
Don't think for a second that Brooks is trying to backpedal from his criticism of Bellator Brooks is simply trying to paint a nuanced picture - one where he is happy but still has irritations about how his bosses have treated others.
"Yeah, I would call it an irritation," he agrees.
"Even though the organization has not treated me poorly, directly, there is an irritation about some things. I mean, you could be working at a job and everything is great but you still see a couple things that could change so you put something in the suggestion box. It doesn’t mean that you hate your job, just that there are some things that need to change."
For example?
"The way certain guys are promoted and others ignored, the way the tournament gets backed up. It’s very difficult to be a part of that and watch it. They may not be treating me poorly but a lot of those guys are still my teammates and friends and I want the best for those who I call friends and teammates."
Brooks claims that no one from Bellator has come to him or his management to discuss his comments, one way or another. "I think that they understand that I'm not attacking them," he says.
That said, Brooks would still speak out even if there was a threat of black-listing or being subjugated to the same poor treatment he says other fighters in Bellator have been as retaliation for his critical comments. "I understand why some fighters keep their mouths shut but the way I see it – if I don’t step up and say things, I can’t make things better for myself," he says.
"There are some small changes, some small adjustments that need to be made. I’m not trying to be negative. I feel like if we do some of these small things differently, it will mean more fans of different fighters and eventually more revenue for everyone – even Bjorn and the refs and the event planners, the guys who organize flights for fighters. Everybody."
The 27 year-old champion out of Illinois may have big goals in the sport of MMA, but he also has a desire to build a more significant legacy with his life. The American Top Team fighter understands that those who see themselves as a part of history can't be afraid of sacrifice.
"A lot of fighters get afraid of getting black listed or ignored but my life does not revolve around MMA. My life continues after MMA. I’ve been smart with my money and finances and I have friends and family who support me. At the end of the day, that’s all I need. If someone is going to black list me over something I do that is positive, that’s there decision. There’s nothing I can do about it," Brooks philosophizes.
"How else do you create change if you’re not willing to sacrifice something, if you’re afraid to be the guy who gets shot down? Maybe other guys will hear what I say and one of them might say something, too. Then, all of the sudden, there’s another guy and another guy and there’s a chain reaction. What are they going to do then – just shut out every one? If all the fighters are saying something, they can’t all be shut out because the promoters will be hurting themselves. I know that some guys might be afraid to voice their opinion but I’m just thinking what a lot of fighters and a lot of fans are thinking but who are too afraid that someone will put their thumb on their neck."
If fight world observers were shocked at Brooks being able to upset a top-ten opponent like Chandler, we may be downright speechless that the young man is so outspoken and brazen about leading with his moral compass.
Brooks, like many fighters, is tired of athletes not getting what they were promised by their promoter, tired of athletes not getting compensated well-enough for putting their lives on the line week after week in the partial employ of gigantic multi-national companies, tired of unfair favoritism for a select few of well-behaving fighters.
Conventional wisdom would dictate that this is not a time for Will Brooks to make waves. This would be the time that he kept his head down, continue to beat top guys and look to larger opportunities.
At the end of the day, however, Brooks may be more interested in becoming the Curt Flood of MMA rather than the sport's Babe Ruth.
"We have to realze that when all the fighting is done, we still have to look at our legacies and see what we’ve done with our lives," Brooks concludes.
"I want to do something that is game changing. I want people to remember me not just for fighting."

No. 1 UFC women's bantamweight title contender Cat Zingano is finally ready to get back to full MMA training. Zingano announced yesterday through her twitter account that she has been cleared to resume hard training after months of rehab and recovery from a torn ACL.
The 31 year-old undefeated contender last fought and won over a year ago, when she stopped Miesha Tate in the final round of their nasty battle. Zingano's win secured a title shot against bantamweight title-holder Ronda Rousey, but the ACL injury forced her to wait.
The mother also faced more adversity with the death of her husband, Mauricio, early this year. Now that Zingano is physically ready to get back to hard training, it will be interesting to see if she gets the title shot she earned out of the gate, or if it takes another fight first.
Sarah Kaufman took the opportunity of Zingano's announcement to call out the "Alpha Cat."
Kaufman herself is coming off a win, over Leslie Smith, three weeks ago. Shortly after the win, UFC president Dana White dismissed the idea of Zingano fighting Kaufman.
Would you rather see Zingano wait and fight the winner of July's bantamweight title bout between Rousey and Alexis Davis, or take on someone like Kaufman first to see how well her knee will hold up?

UFC president Dana White announced today on Twitter that welterweights Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown will be the main event for the July 26 UFC on FOX card in San Jose and that the winner will get the next shot at champion Johny Hendricks. Brown and Lawler are both coming off of big recent victories and share the blood and guts style of fighting that will likely make this bout a thrilling one.
Brown is the owner of the most impressive win-streak of any contender in the welterweight division, having strung together his seventh straight May 10 against Erik Silva in the exciting UFC Fight Night main event. Lawler dominated Jake Ellenberger this past weekend at UFC 173 before finishing him via TKO.
Before that, Lawler lost a close decision to Johny Hendricks in March in one of the most brutal and exciting UFC title fights in history. Prior to that loss, Lawler had won three straight.
One would imagine that Lawler had done enough to earn a title fight next already, but Hendricks is out of action for a bit because of injuries he went into the Lawler fight with. The July 26 date of their showdown means that neither man will have much, if any rest time before heading back into training camp.
