Ducati Completes Test At Mugello - Electronics, Engine And Swingarm Key Changes

The weather finally smiled on Ducati's testing efforts on Thursday, providing a full day of testing under excellent conditions. After parts of the first two days were lost to rain and a wet track, the sun shone all day Thursday, with the track being too hot, if anything. Though the post-race press release is as free of detailed information as ever, the positive vibe that came through in both the press release and in the responses from various sources at the test is evident. Lap times were not made public, but according to GPOne.com, Valentino Rossi ran a 1'48.62 and Nicky Hayden posted a 1'48.84, on what Troy Bayliss - also there, testing the Panigale Superbike - described as a slow track due to the temperature. That is close to the fastest lap set by Jorge Lorenzo at last year's race on the 800cc Yamaha, but a long way off the 1'47.326 set by Casey Stoner on the 1000cc Honda at the test after last year's race at Mugello.

Weekend warriors: Michael Chandler, Team Faber lead the weekend with big wins

Though the weekend was dominated by the UFC fights on Fox, there were plenty of other fights over the weekend, including this quick knockout Michael Chandler pulled off at Bellator:

In his first fight since beating Eddie Alvarez for the Bellator lightweight title, Chandler needed just 0:56 to TKO Akihiro Gono. After the bout, Gono said he was retiring from his 18-year MMA career that included bouts in Pride, the UFC, Sengoku and Bellator.

In other Bellator action, Bryan Baker earned a trip to the welterweight tourney final with a decision over Ben Saunders. Heavyweight Damian Grabowski decisioned Dave Huckaba in a bout that registered as less-than-exciting, and Ryan Ford TKOed Luis Santos in the second round.

On "The Ultimate Fighter," Urijah Faber won the most important event: the Coaches Challenge. He beat Dominick Cruz in an obstacle course that involved the use of a grenade launcher. Afterwards, Andy Ogle beat Mike Rio with a rear naked choke to give Team Faber five fighters in the quarterfinals. Next week, James Vick will face Joe Proctor and Justin Lawrence will take on Michael Chiesa in the first quarterfinal bouts.

At Super Fight League, (go ahead and sing the song) James Thompson beat Bobby Lashley in a unanimous decision. Zelg Galesic scored the weekend's memorable moment with a flying knee knockout of Doug Marshall.

What was your favorite bout of the weekend? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Cowboy Cerrone Looking for a Fight in Denver

Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone got back in the win column last night in a big way, putting on one of the best performances of his career by absolutely dominating Jeremy Stephens from the first bell to the last. Instead of an opponent, the 29-year-old lightweight is calling out a city for his next fight: his hometown of Denver, Colorado.

Rossi, Hayden, Ninth and Tenth in French GP Free Practice

Valentino Rossi Le Mans 2012

Unfavourable weather forecasts notwithstanding, the first day of the French Grand Prix race weekend gave the two Ducati Team riders the opportunity to complete both free practice sessions on a dry circuit.

Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden finished the day in ninth and tenth places, respectively, with both riders being affected by lack of grip, which prevented them from taking full advantage of the bike’s power.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 9th (1:35.112)
“This afternoon we tried some bike settings that were quite varied, and we’re trying to understand what the right direction is for finding more grip on corner exits. So far, particularly when the tyre starts to wear, we’re losing a lot compared to the others. Our gap to the front is pretty large, and although the gaps in our group are quite small, there’s more time between us and seventh place than there was in Portugal. We’ll have to try to do better. We’re trying some different things and we’re working hard, so we’ll see how we do tomorrow.”

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 10th (1:35.132)
“It wasn’t an easy day. The weather was a bit cold, but luckily it was dry. I struggled a little bit everywhere. Grip on the edge wasn’t very good, and any time I would get going okay, I would have a hard time stopping the bike and run wide on entry. I haven’t had that problem much this year, and when you push wide, it also hurts the exit. We tried a couple of things but never really found a really good direction. We tried the hard tyre a little this afternoon just to check, because the soft tyre definitely feels like it’s going off a bit, but I wasn’t able to make it work that well. We’ll sit down tonight and have a good think about it and see what to do tomorrow.”

2012 Le Mans MotoGP Thursday Round Up: On Casey Stoner's Retirement

It is hard to upstage Valentino Rossi. It takes something large, significant, to take the limelight away from the nine-time World Champion, and the man who has been the charismatic heart of MotoGP for the best part of 15 years. To do that, you have to "Go big or go home," as British road racer Guy Martin likes to put it.

At Le Mans, Casey Stoner upstaged Rossi. The press conference - usually a rather staid affair, with the usual niceties about the track, each rider's chances at the circuit and a couple of witticisms - started unusually, with Nick Harris, the veteran commentator who leads the official press conferences, saying that Stoner would like to make a statement to the press. Stoner then proceeded to press the big red button that set Twitter, the internet and newswires ablaze. In the process, he did not so much ignite the 2013 MotoGP Silly Season, as douse it in liquid oxygen and set a flame thrower to it.

Stoner's announcement that he will retire at the end of this season has been covered in depth just about everywhere - see transcripts of his statement to the press here, and his detailed responses to questions here - but the question is, what happened to the Australian's denials exactly two weeks ago at Estoril of the stories that emerged in the Spanish press? Was the report in Solo Moto correct, and had Stoner already decided to retire at Jerez, or was Stoner being truthful when he denied any decision had been made. Piecing together the puzzle of what happened over the past few weeks, the following picture emerges.
