World Superbike heads cross-channel and Donington-bound
The 2012 eni FIM Superbike World Championship continues its first European leg of races this coming weekend at the Donington Park circuit in the UK, where it all began back in 1988, the year of the very first round of the production-based series. 25 years and 301 rounds further on, the East Midlands track 180 kms north of London is getting ready to offer even more excitement at what will be the fifth of 14 rounds this season and races number 598 and 599 in its history.
The complicated Monza weekend left the points standings virtually unchanged, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) still in control but with a two-point lead over Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati). With his triumph at the fastest circuit on the calendar Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) is now just six points away from the top slot and ready to make the most of home advantage. Donington is ideal ground for another great race by Sykes, who first emerged on the world scene in 2008 when he finished second on a Suzuki as a wild-card rider behind the three-times champion Troy Bayliss.
Biaggi has never won at Donington but he does have a 50% podium record, four times out of eight. His compatriot Marco Melandri, currently fourth in the table 25 points behind the leader, has gone better in the UK, taking his first win in Superbike last year and sharing the day with Carlos Checa.
In 2011 the Spaniard picked up the most points (45 out of 50 with a win and a second place) on a Ducati, a bike that in all of its different versions has won at Donington 17 times in 38 races. Another rider to keep an eye on will be Jonathan Rea, fifth in the points table but 27.5 points behind Biaggi: the spectacular northern Irishman has never been on the podium at Donington while Honda have not won a race here since 2008 when Ryuichi Kiyonari scored the double in a wet race.
The numerous UK fans expected to pack into Donington will also be cheering on their local hero Leon Haslam, the BMW Motorrad man who hails from just down the road near Derby. Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati), who scored his first win in the wet at Assen but then had to take a rain check from pole at Monza due to a problem in the warm-up lap, is also sure to be back on the ball this weekend.
It will also be a home round for the Crescent FIXI Suzuki team, which will line up with Leon Camier, podium finisher in 2011 with Aprilia and American John Hopkins who will probably not be in perfect form after picking up a broken bone in his foot at Monza. With the possibility of utilizing reference data accumulated in recent editions of the BSB championship, the Suzuki GSX-R might be in with a chance of gate-crashing the WSB regulars’ party.
Good news comes on the weather front, with a sunny weekend on the cards: after the rain that has ruined the last two rounds at Assen and Monza, the British crowd will be hoping for some true Superbike action at their home event.

Urijah Faber gets Interim Title bout at UFC 148, Dominick Cruz to stay on as "Ultimate Fighter:Live" coach

Appearing on UFC Tonight on Fuel TV on Tuesday, UFC President Dana White cleared up some of the questions left in the wake of Monday's news that Dominick Cruz had suffered a serious knee injury, taking him out of his UFC 148 title bout with Urijah Faber.
First up, White confirmed that Faber will indeed remain on the UFC 148 card, and he'll fight for an Interim Bantamweight Championship. However, White revealed that no opponent has yet been determined as they try to determine the best name for that fight.
Next up was the question of whether or not Cruz would be kept on as coach for the remainder of The Ultimate Fighter. Two of the fighters on his team said during a conference call on Tuesday that they hoped he would stay on, and that is indeed the route the UFC will take. So Cruz will continue coaching his team as the final month of "TUF: Live" plays out on FX, then will likely head home to work on recovering from his knee injury.
Penick's Analysis: With Renan Barao already on the UFC 148 card, it makes the most sense to move him up to face Faber. That said, because Michael McDonald just knocked out former Champion Miguel Torres, the UFC may be inclined to bring him in for the shot, and that internal debate is likely playing out right now as they attempt to figure out which way they're going to go with that fight.

WSBK: Race 1 at Monza Cancelled for Safety Concerns
Race 1 for World Superbike at Monza proved to be an interesting affair this Sunday, as the race was ultimately cancelled for safety reasons. Starting normally under dry conditions, riders took to the track on slicks, only to have the race red-flagged two laps after its start. 2012 WSBK Monza Weekend Round Up: Pirelli Wets
Pirelli brought their tyres to Monza, knowing rain was a possibility. The tyres they brought were the best they could make with the science the racing economy can fund. Wet weather tyres need to displace water and allow bikes to grip in the wet and get their power down while allowing them to brake. What they are not designed to do is sustained stretches of immense speed on abrasive dry tarmac. If you watch their video, you get some idea of the punishment Monza gives rubber.
Monza is a unique track and one that punishes tyres in unique ways, as was seen when multiple wet tyres on different bikes were delaminated during Superpole. This wasn't the characteristics of one bike, or an overzealous rider that couldn't handle the tyres, this was a feature of the track and the weather clashing. Three 300kmh sections of track require one sort of tyre and standing water requires another. When riders were telling us that wet tyres would only last three laps on a Superbike, it was clear that if the rain came down, it would be impossible to race.

2012 Monza World Supersport FP1 - Lowes a step ahead of the rest.
After a red flag on the first out lap delayed a proper start, Sam Lowes and Broc Parkes settled into the top two places, joined by Jules Cluzel's fast CBR600 and Kenan Sofuoglu on the Kawasaki in the early part of the session. Sam Lowes was the first rider into the 1'49s, then the first into the 1'48s, where he was eventually joined by Fabien Foret and Broc Parkes. Last year's pole position was an astounding 1'47.809 by Chaz Davies, but tellingly, Sam Lowes was in second place, having to wait until Saturday before he could set a 1'48 lap; a 1'48.051. These are the yardsticks for this weekend's qualifying.
