The Sunday Junkie: Nov. 25 edition
This week, The Sunday Junkie got reams of entries on the potential fight between the UFC's middleweight and welterweight champs, which could be in the works after St-Pierre's win over Carlos Condit at UFC 154.
But this week's Canadian winner, "A-shock," from London, Ontario, has some interesting ideas on how to infuse new life into the UFC's reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter."

Jose Aldo on Conor McGregor: 'Nothing stands out'
UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo (24-1) has said talk of him potentially fighting Conor McGregor (16-2) is premature, and even "disrespectful." In a recent MMA Junkie interview, he seemed to maintain that stance, and insisted that he's singularly focused on challenger Chad Mendes and their Oct. 25 fight date.
However, Aldo didn't go so far as to say that he hasn't kept close tabs on McGregor's fights and progress. “I make it a point to observe all fighters in the featherweight category,” he said.
“I’m the champion, and I plan to remain the champion. I do pay attention to any featherweight fight where someone is ranked in the UFC, since that could potentially be my next adversary."
That said, Aldo isn't particularly concerned with what the Irishman brings to the table as a challenger. At least, Aldo doesn't see anything exceptional in the brash newcomer.
"Conor is no different than any other fighter," he said.
“I don’t see anything that stands out."
Like Frankie Edgar, however, Aldo seems to understand that the momentum and promotional push behind McGregor may, for now, be an unstoppable force. "Scarface" understands that, should he get by Mendes in their rematch in Brazil later this month, it's quite possible he'll have to fight the rising star McGregor.
Aldo is fine with that, and said he'll turn his attention to the "Notorious" hype train, next. “After my fight [with Mendes]," Aldo concluded, "I’ll have time to see what the hype’s all about.”

Dana White plans to attend Strikeforce show, disappointed with turn of events
In recent months, when it comes to Strikeforce, the Zuffa president has forced himself to be mum on the topic of the UFC's sibling promotion. "I don't have anything to do with them" was a common response when reporters wanted to get his take on Strikeforce.
White recently, though, admitted he's disappointed with how things have turned out for the promotion.
The peace and accomplishment behind Charles Rosa's UFC debut
Only UFC fighters themselves know what they feel as they walk into the cage, glove up and fight one another. One can only imagine that it has to be a daunting sense.
First time “Octagon jitters” are almost legendary among debuting UFC combatants. The lights, cameras, large arena, and quite conscious sense of how what’s about to happen is both an incredible career opportunity, after years of work and dedication, as well as perhaps the most dangerous and high-level fight you’ve ever been in, can doubtless make for an interesting brew of nerves for most fighters.
Maybe featherweight Charles Rosa (9-1) felt all of that, heavily, as he stepped into the cage for the first time on October 4 and fought top 10 fighter Dennis Siver (22-9). After all, Rosa had been thisclose to getting a UFC contract for some time, now, as a top prospect.
And when he finally got the call, it was to fight on short notice against a much more experienced fighter in Siver, on another continent, and after cutting nearly 30 pounds in one week. If Rosa felt the “Octagon jitters,” he sure didn’t show it.
For three rounds, Rosa looked to be not just a top-level UFC fighter, but someone who was so at home in the Octagon, that he enjoyed every second of his close battle to Siver.
Rosa lost a close decision, but earned a performance bonus check and put the division on notice that he was for real. Perhaps he was able to look so comfortable, and even happy, while fighting a Hercules look-a-like on short notice because of how far he’d gone to get there.
Rosa, at just 28 years old, is a young man. He has already, however, lived plenty, and persevered through a lot already.
In fact, MMA may have very well helped him save his own life.
Ultimate Rehab
Charles Rosa is from the Boston area, yet he began his fight training down in South Florida. When we spoke with the featherweight some months ago, while he was still fighting on regional circuits and hoping to get a call up to the major leagues of MMA, Rosa revealed that it wasn’t training that initially brought him to Florida from Massachusetts years ago, but rather a drug rehabilitation program.
Rosa had experienced things many other young people his age had – a sense of aimlessness, coupled with frustration and anger – after losing both his first athletic love in hockey, and a beloved brother. Charles wasn’t doing a whole lot up North, and was eventually compelled to go to rehab.
Florida, he hoped, would be a fresh start. It became just that, thanks to a new sport for the man who would go on to be called, “The Boston Strangler.”
“I was on the bus one day, heading to the facility and I saw a guy with a gym bag,” Rosa recalled, to us.
“I recognized it as a fight gym bag, and I asked him where he trained. He told me, and I decided to go check it out.”
Rosa had an uncle who boxed, and thought of himself as a tough guy, though he had little in the way of formal training. Still, when he walked into American Top Team black belt, and UFC veteran Charles “Chainsaw” McCarthy’s gym for the first time, he sought out as much action as possible.
First, he unintentionally insulted Cole Miller by challenging him to spar. Miller obliged him and battered the rookie around a bit.
Most importantly, however, Rosa came back the next day. And the next, and the next day after that.
“I thought I was tough, and I was expecting them to say, ‘good job,’ or something like that. But nobody said anything, so I kept coming back and training more,” he said.
Eventually, Rosa’s diligent attendance in class did get McCarthy’s attention, and he sat the newbie down for a talk. “He told me that he thought I could be good, if I trained hard,” Rosa recounted.
“When I first walked in, I knew nothing about MMA, so I didn’t know who all the guys around me were. Eventually, I learned that a lot of them were some of the best fighters in the world. I realized who I was working with. These were world-class guys and I was surviving with them, on just guts.”
Rosa took McCarthy’s talk seriously, and trained harder than ever, with the hopes of landing his own MMA debut, sooner than later. McCarthy initially rebuffed Rosa’s many attempts to have a fight booked, but there was a reason.
“Every week I’d come in and ask, ‘do you have a fight for me?’ And he would say, ‘not yet, not yet.’ Later, he told me that he had a plan for me,” Rosa said.
“They thought I could become a world champion one day. So, they wanted to take things seriously, slowly, and build a career.”
The planning and deliberation paid off for Rosa because once he made his pro debut, in 2012, he would rattle off nine straight wins over the next two years. More than that, Rosa had gotten clean and found a new calling.
“MMA kind of replaced hockey for me, I think,” he told us.
“This was something new that I loved, and got good at.”
To be sure, Rosa had a lot on the line when he made his UFC debut a week ago against Siver. More than that, perhaps, he was exactly where he wanted to be, and so he was able to look so fluid and confident against a savvy veteran, many years and battles his elder.
“I don’t think I could do a regular, nine to five job,” he told us.
“[MMA] fits my personality and temperament well. This is what I’m supposed to do.”

Conor McGregor talks about fighting Jose Aldo vs Chad Mendes 2 winner

Fighters seek primal, truer challenge at Battlegrounds MMA
Like most high-level professional MMA fighters, Brock Larson, (37-8) can often spend his training camps obsessing about a coming opponent. In these days of specialized camps, coaches watch tons of opponent film and tailor training towards beating that one guy, on that one night.
But, as he prepared for who knows what (or who) as a participant of the Battlegrounds MMA 8-man one night tournament, which takes place tonight in Tulsa, Larsen was involved in a more basic, truer training camp. Like the other seven participants in the tournament, Larson hopes to fight and win three times in order to be the evening’s champion.
Because the brackets were not made until after weigh-ins on Thursday night, Larson and his fellow welterweight tournament competitors had no idea who they’d face at any point in the competition. This type of challenge is almost of unheard of in modern MMA, and quite daunting for any fighter.
Fortunately for Larson, his career extends much further back than “modern MMA,” and he’s the veteran of a number of tournaments where he fought and beat multiple men in a single night. Like July 23, 2005 in a place called Hayward, WI, on an Extreme Challenge card where Larson beat Ryan McGivern, Ryan Jensen, and DeMarques Johnson in succession.
Or, on March 12, 2004, when Larson submitted Brian Maceachern with an arm bar, took a breather, and then stepped back in to submit Alex Gasson with another arm bar at the International Cage Combat trials in Minnesota.
“Back in the day, there wasn’t much film on anybody so you just kind of focused on what you were good at, during training,” Larson remembers and tells Cagewriter during a break in training several weeks ago.
“Now a days there’s a risk of us over analyzing things. It’s kinda refreshing to have been in training and work on what I’m good at, and work on my own weaknesses instead of trying to replicate another specific opponent.”
For Jesse Taylor (27-10), another Battlegrounds welterweight tournament participant, the challenge of something like a one night tournament is mostly psychological. “It’s a psychological game,” he says.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m training hard. But there are things you can’t train for and that’s heart and the mental side to fighting. You’ve got to have a bad-ass mental game if you’re looking to fight and win three times in one night – which, of course, is my goal. I enjoy that type of fighting. It’s old-school, and a throw back.”
Battlegrounds MMA executive and former MMA fighter and Olympic gold medalist Kenny Monday is quite familiar with competing in tournaments from his lifetime of wrestling, and he agrees that these welterweights face particularly mental obstacles. “In tournaments, confidence and being mentally strong are so crucial,” he says.
“You don’t know who you’ll come up against so you’ve got to be certain in your own preparation and abilities.”
On the physical side, both Larson and Taylor have adjusted the way they train to hopefully be prepared for the toll fighting multiple times in one night will put on their bodies. At home in Minnesota, Larson takes time each week to mimic fight night.
“We’ve done things a lil bit different this time,” he explains.
“Twice a week I kind of go through the tournament. I’m doing three, five-minute rounds, then I’ll rest for ten minutes, and then hit it again. I do that a total of three times with fresh guys in on me every round.”
Across the country, Taylor utilized his long days of training and driving from gym to gym in Southern California to help him get ready for the grueling tournament, tonight. “It’s just been a lot of old-fashioned training,” he said.
“I’ve just thought about fighting for all that much time. It’s basically like we’ve had to get ready to fight all day long. I’m getting a lot of sparring rounds in. I have to be careful doing it, but we do a lot.
“There are three days a week where I’m sparring all day. I go up to Team Quest to spar in the morning, then I have a little break, and drive back down to San Diego and spar more at The Arena from 4:00pm to 8:30pm. It’s perfect for what I’m going to be doing in the tournament.
Although tonight’s tournament may just be another day in the office for professionals like Taylor and Larson, in many ways, doing what they do for a living, both men seem keenly aware that this is something special. Accordingly, they each have particular reasons for taking part in the 8-man tournament.
“I think it is an interesting twist for me in the later part of my career,” Larson says.
“I did [tournaments] a lot when I first started. I thought, heck, I did this when I was 27, might as well do it again when I’m 37 (laughs). The guys in this tournament are pretty tough, so that makes it even more exciting.
“At this point in my career, I’m looking for new challenges. I’m looking for some fun stuff.”
The younger Taylor won’t have the same full-circle experience as Larson, but he can’t wait to make it is own. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like doing a tournament,” he says.
“It’s definitely something on my ‘bucket list.’ It’s going to be a really cool story to tell my grand kids (laughs). I’m looking forward to it…I’m just doing this for the challenge.”

Eduardo Dantas: 'If I fight anybody, I'll kill them'
Eduardo Dantas (16-3) isn't bothered by all the trash talk from his opponent Joe Warren (11-3) for Friday's Bellator bantamweight title unification bout in Thackerville, OK (airing on Spike TV). Really, he isn't.
The 37 year-old former world champion wrestler Warren has called the 25 year-old Dantas "a kid," for example. "He can talk anything he wants," Dantas tells us Wed. afternoon.
"Yes, I'm younger. I'm also much more fast, and much more aggressive because I'm young."
The Brazilian champ also isn't upset that Bellator decided to create an interim title - which Warren won - even though it has only been about six months since he last fought and won. Truly, he's happy for the promotion and for Warren.
"It doesn't make a big difference to me," Dantas says, unconvincingly.
"Everyone knows I'm the champ. To me, Bellator gave him a belt because he's famous, so they could take pictures with him holding it."
Ahh, yes. Those pictures of Warren holding his interim belt.
Dantas has repeatedly mentioned those pictures in this and other conversations. That doesn't mean seeing those shots have given the Nova Uniao fighter any added motivation, of course.
"No," Dantas begins.
"I think it is good for [Warren]. He's an old guy so it is goof for him to have a belt. He may be happy right now, but on Friday, he won't be."
No doubt, part of Dantas' clever curtness is due to the fact that we're bothering him as he cuts weight, as well as to Warren's pre-fight hype. However, the calm in the voice of "Dudu" is likely the result of pure confidence, forged on the Nova Uniao mats while sparring with the likes of UFC champions Jose Aldo and Renan Barao.
Many top fighters outside of the UFC wonder how they would stack up against the elite of the world's top MMA promotion. After training with the UFC's best, day in and day out, Dantas doesn't appear to have any doubt about himself.
"It doesn't matter where guys fight," he concludes.
"If I fight any body, I kill them."

Frankie Edgar says Conor McGregor push is no surprise
Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (17-4-1) is set to face Cub Swanson (21-5) next month in what looked like a No. 1 contender's fight until UFC president Dana White all but dismissed the pair as potential repeat opponents for title-holder Jose Aldo (24-1), and lined up Conor McGregor as the likely next title challenger if the champ gets past Chad Mendes (16-1) later this month. Edgar lost a decision to Aldo in 2013, and Swanson was quickly KO'd by "Scarface" back in 2009.
Since that time, Swanson has won six straight, and Edgar has won two in a row. McGregor has won his first four UFC fights and became a fast global star in the promotion.
It's because of that rapid rise to fame that Edgar understands White and the UFC's motivation in pushing the brash Irishman ahead of the title challenger's pack.
"It doesn't surprise me," Edgar told ESPN.com in a recent interview. "As a promoter, it's probably the smart thing to do. He's got a lot of buzz going. Why have him lose before they can make money on that fight?"
Of course, Edgar wants another crack at Aldo and the featherweight title, should he get past Swanson on Nov. 22. Don't expect "The Answer" to do much more than get back to work if he doesn't get the opportunity, however.
"I do want to fight for the title after I beat Cub, but if I have to fight somebody else, what am I going to do?" he asked. "I can't sit around and feel sorry for myself. I have to go to work and get it done."
As for how he thinks he himself would fare against the "Notorious" McGregor, Edgar was succinct. I know I match up well against him," he said.
Would you rather see McGregor face the winner of Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes II, instead of having Edgar or Swanson vie for the featherweight title? Let us know in the comments section!

UFC's Mark Hunt: 'I'm better than ever before'
UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt (10-8) has lost only once in his last seven outings, and positioned himself for a shot at the world title at 40 years of age. The "Super Samoan" originally made his name as a world K-1 kickboxing champion, nearly 15 years ago, but he says he's much better now than he's ever been before.
“I’m a way better fighter now,” he said in a recent interview.
“I’m dedicating far more time to the sport, to my training, my preparation, than I ever did back then...This is the second sport that I’ve reached the top. I was the only guy from outside Europe to have won a KI and now I’m going to be the first guy from this part of the world to win a UFC title.”
Hunt last fought and won via KO in late September against Roy Nelson. UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (13-1) defends his belt Nov. 15 against Fabricio Werdum (18-5-1), in Mexico City.
The timing seems right for Hunt, at this point, and he looks poised to be the next compelling challenger for UFC heavyweight gold. The native New Zealander may be older than his opponents with less overall MMA fights than most of them, but he's fought nothing but top competition since moving from kickboxing to MMA, and says no man daunts him.
“There isn’t a fighter anywhere who can intimidate me now," he continued.
“There are no other factors that cause me stress when I get inside the Octagon. I guess that’s an advantage of getting older.”

UFC’s John Dodson out for a year with injured ACL
Chad Mendes on UFC champ Jose Aldo: 'I'm in his head'
UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (24-1) claims he shoved #1 contender Chad Mendes (16-1) at a media event simply to promote their Oct. 25 title rematch, but the challenger believes there's another reason. "I think that’s bull," Mendes said recently.
"[Aldo] lost his temper, he lost his cool and that’s never happened before. So he’s trying to backtrack and cover that up, like, we were just trying to sell the fight. If that was the case, if you were trying to sell the fight, you wouldn’t come out and say that afterwards. That was him backpedaling for sure."
Mendes may have lost via dramatic first round KO at the hands of Aldo the first time they met, but the Team Alpha Male fighter insists he's the one with the psychological advantage heading into the rematch. "For me it’s basically me thinking I’m in his head, man," he continued.
"We’ve never seen Aldo do this with any opponent. I think he feels threatened in his head, which is right where I want to be. When you get into a stare-off and the guy shoves you or pushes you, it’s kind of funny to me. That’s our job, and that’s what we’re supposed to do. If you don’t want to be there, don’t do the damn stare down. It’s just funny to me to see him get frustrated and lose his cool."
Do you think either fighter is in the other's head? Let us know in the comments section!

Chan Sung Jung out of MMA for two more years to complete military service
Top UFC featherweight contender, and former world title challenger Chan Sung Jung will step away from MMA competition for the next two years in order to fulfill the mandatory military service requirements of his native South Korea, according to reports. The 27 year-old has already not fought in over a year - since losing a competitive and gutsy bout to champion Jose Aldo in Aug. 2013 at UFC 163 - to injuries.
The fan-favorite was set to return to action this month, but he was injured again this past summer and was forced to pull out. Now, "The Korean Zombie," is set to lose two more years from the prime of his career.
According to reports, Jung posted the announcement Monday on his official Facebook page, in Korean. Cagewriter contacted the UFC for comment, but they had none at time of publication.
Our partners over at MMA Fighting followed up Jung's manager Brian Rhee, who confirmed the reports. "He feels bad for his fans and thankful to the UFC, Dana and the Ferttitas for letting him be a professional fighter," Rhee said.
"He's going to rehab, train and comeback stronger than ever after the end of the 2 years."
According to CBS News, South Korean "able-bodied men" must serve in the nation's military for at least 26 months before reaching the age of 30. South Korea, of course, borders a brutal dictatorship to the North.
North Korea has over a million troops, and South Korea reportedly has a military just over 600,000 large. Jung's birthday is listed as March 17, 1987, which means he is just at the deadline for when he could begin his military service and still abide by South Korean conscription law.
The aggressive fighter has become beloved across the world for his non-stop and skilled style. Before losing to Aldo, Jung had won and finished three straight UFC fights.
Jung's life is set to change rapidly, and in more ways than one, this month. The fighter will not only reportedly begin his military service Oct. 20, he and his wife are also expecting their first child this very week.

Bobby Lashley: Separating fact from fiction
You look at a hulking pro wrestler like Bobby Lashley, and the tendency is to think you know the type. Of course, Lashley (11-2) isn’t just a pro wrestling entertainer – he’s also an MMA fighter with a long and healthy career.
Hearing from Lashley the day before his Bellator bout tonight in Kansas against undefeated Karl Etherington (9-0), the former WWE star says there’s quite a bit fans don’t know about him. A sampling:
Lashley is a single dad.
“I don’t have the time to rest between workouts like many fighters do, because I’ve got to take my kids to the park, or the circuit, or the doctor. It’s great, but it takes a lot of my time,” he says.
Lashley is a vegetarian. Whoah.
Yeah, he’s got muscles, but he isn’t nearly as big as you may have thought.
“They announce me in pro wrestling at over 300 pounds and I just shake my head. People ask me, ‘how do you go from 300 pounds down to heavyweight to fight in MMA?’ I’m like, ‘dude, I’m no where near 300 pounds.’
The fighter sticks around 240 pounds, he says. And, despite the bad rep big muscles often have in functional sports like MMA, the cerebral fighter says he trains the right way, for both pro wrestling performance, and competition.
“I just look really big because I’m pretty lean, and I have a lot of definition in my body,” he explains.
“But that’s because I know exactly what I’m doing. I eat very specifically, and train very specifically, so that I can have endurance and size.”
Here’s another point of clarification for Lashley – he loves MMA. Like, really.
Whenever a celebrity professional wrestler gives MMA a shot, there’s almost always just as much skepticism about their commitment, as there is excitement. Lashley was a stand-out amateur wrestler before getting into the sports entertainment game, however, and says he loves the return to hard training that MMA has given him.
And Lashley has proven to not be a flash in the pan, and shown a willingness to work past set-backs in MMA. If his near six-year career, spanning many different promotions hasn’t proven that, he says that opening his own MMA gym should.
“Getting into MMA was definitely a transition period,” he admits.
“It took time to get used to it. But, I also loved it right away, because I loved the training. I love to train hard. That’s why I opened my own gym.”
Lashley appears to be involved in MMA for just that reason – the love of it. He believes that, at 38, he’ll have more longevity in pro wrestling but he’s game for one last push as a competitor.
“I think my longevity will be more in pro wrestling,” he says.
“Would I like another 5-6 years in MMA? Sure. But that’s probably not going to be possible. That’s why I tell people that I think this might be the last run. I think I have one more run in me.”

10/7 NIGHTTIME UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site tonight:
-WSOF executive Ali Abdelaziz says he thinks the WSOF 15 card will be better and bigger than the UFC 180 and Bellator 131 events on the same Nov. 15 date. That's despite being the smallest organization of the three with the least television viewership and exposure. Head to the mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser for his comments along with further thoughts.
-The UFC has made the list of Forbes' Fab 40, where they list the top ten in “brand value” in four separate categories. The UFC came in at No. 10 on the “business” brand value, as the UFC name brings them an added value of $440 million. Get more on their spot on the list with further thoughts on the numbers on the mobile site.
-Rick Story pulled off an upset over Gunnar Nelson on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 54 despite suffering a significant injury during the course of the bout. Head to the mobile site to see the x-ray of his broken ankle, along with additional thoughts on him fighting through it to pick up that win.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

TJ Grant says there's no time table for UFC return
TJ Grant (21-5) has won five straight fights, including his last two by nasty stoppages, but he also hasn’t fought in about a year and a half. While training for a UFC title bout, Grant sustained a concussion.
That injury, and the after-effects, have kept the powerful wrestler out of competition since May, 2013. In a recent interview, Grant says that his recovery is coming along, but that he has also not begun sparring again or worked out a time table for when he’ll fight again.
"There’s no time table,” Grant told MMA Junkie.
“I can work out at high intensity, I just don’t spar and stuff like that. We’ll see what happens. I’m just doing what I can and not getting too far away from the sport. Still somehow stay involved in it, watch it and keep my body in good shape. That’s really all I can do.”
The lay-off has been hard on Grant, but he remains optimistic. “It’s definitely been difficult,” he admitted.
“The whole year’s been difficult. Being a professional fighter, you need to be at another level and I’m optimistic going forward that I’ll get better.”
Grant went on to explain that, though he is physically fit to fight, he is still concerned about his long-term brain health. That’s why he’s being careful about his come back.
“I could fight tomorrow - I just know it wouldn’t be good for my long-term health,” he said.
Grant is a hard working and exciting fighter, and we wish him all the best during his recover. We’re glad to hear that he’s taking a cautious path back to the cage in order to protect his health.
Hopefully his sponsors and the UFC are continuing to support him so he can pay the bills and work towards a return.
