Georgi Karakhanyan: Fighting lions
Georgi Karakhanyan is in Las Vegas to defend his WSOF featherweight title against Rick Glenn Saturday night at WSOF 10, but at the moment, the Moscow-born fighter is focused on the Russia vs. South Korea World Cup game that he’s watching. There’s weight to cut but there’s also a game to win.
“I always follow the Russian team,” he says nervously as his squad goes through a tense moment in the game against South Korea.
“I want them to do good and they still might advance to the next round. But, I chose Germany and Argentina as favorites to win. Argentina hasn’t performed the way I thought but Germany is extremely strong, as has been Holland.”
Georgi’s interest in his national team and futbol overall, extends a bit further than even the average rabid soccer fan, though. Before he ever got into the fight game, Karakhanyan was a professional soccer player.
He aspired to greatness on the turf as a teenage player but circumstances outside of his control, as well as his own sense of right and wrong, served as roadblocks in the Russian’s brief professional soccer career. When Karakhanyan was seventeen, he played for a pro team in San Diego until the organization went out of business.
From there, Georgi made a team in Mexico but his elation at being picked up soon dissipated when they asked him to do some legally questionable things in order to play for them.
“I made the team but unfortunately, they wanted me to do some stuff I couldn’t do. They wanted me to sign under a different name than was on my passport,” he explains.
So, Georgi came back to the States, a bit disillusioned. His pro sports dreams seemed out of reach and all of the sudden he was just another teenager behind on his high school credits.
It was a lot for the immigrant to go through. Just seven years prior, he changed countries and hemispheres, moving from Moscow to Southern California. Then, his soccer dreams took him to yet another country and spit him back out before he could understand what was going on.
Georgi simply buckled down, got some construction gigs and threw himself into his work, to make ends meet. While working construction, Karakhanyan was introduced to the sport that he would eventually become a champion in.
“A friend of mine did Jiu Jitsu and told me I should try it,” he remembers.
“So, I did. I signed up for classes and then, six months later, without any stand-up training, they asked me if I wanted to take a fight because someone was out with an injury. I asked if it was an amateur fight or professional and they said it was a pro one. It was a King of the Cage event. Man, I fought but looked very sloppy (laughs). Just walking down to the cage I gassed out because I had so much adrenaline. I was lucky enough to win by guillotine, which was the only move I knew.”
Georgie liked the feeling of fighting MMA, so kept it up in between working twelve-hour shifts in construction. He says that he never considered a career in the sport as a possibility until his coaches told him ne needed to focus on it more.
“Yeah, I never thought of it but after my fifth fight, my coaches told me that I had potential and that I should focus on that. It sometimes got hard doing my shifts and then coming and training. They said I should commit to MMA and really give it a try, full-time,” he says.
The move paid off, as Karakhanyan’s record improved and he fought for bigger promotions. At present, the 145 pounder has not lost in over three years, culminating in a title win over Lance Palmer last December at WSOF 7.
Since winning the belt, Georgie’s life has changed a bit. He’s sponsored by Reebok and appears on national television.
The soccer player-turned fighter has already gone further than he ever thought possible but he insists that his mentality hasn’t changed. There’s too much left to accomplish to become complacent.
“My work ethic has probably changed in that now I train way harder,” he says.
I know all the guys I fight want to be where I’m at. I can’t train when I want to train, I can’t take off when my body is sore. It’s like you’re on top and all these hungry lions are trying to eat you and take your place. So, you’ve got to train hard. You’ve got to be on top of your game because when you stop training hard, that’s when they get you.”

Jose Aldo on fence grab: 'It didn't change first Mendes fight'
Two and a half years ago, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo knocked out Chad Mendes in the last second of round one in his home country of Brazil and produced one of the most thrilling fight-endings in UFC history. The knockout, however, immediately followed the champion defending a take down attempt by Mendes, in part, by illegally grabbing onto the chain link fence wall.
As such, critics of Aldo have put a mental asterisk next to that win for the Brazilian. Now that Aldo and Mendes are set to rematch in August, talk of their first fight's ending came up recently.
When asked by MMA Fighting if he believes his cage-grabbing played a big role in his win over Mendes, "Scarface" dismissed the idea. "I don't see a problem. People always find things to say," he said.
"Every fighter holds the fence once. It happens. I held it once but he took me down three times and I came right back up. It didn't change the fight. I don't care if he's talking or if anyone else is talking. The important thing is that I know what I'm capable of."
As Aldo heads into his training camp to prepare for Mendes, he went on to say that he considers it a new fight altogether, and expects to have to evolve in order to get the win he plans for. Do you think the fence-grab played a big part in Aldo's win over Mendes, and how do you see the rematch going down?

Dana White gives Ross Pearson win bonus despite controversial loss
Judges in New Mexico may have decided that Ross Pearson lost his UFC Fight Night bout to Diego Sanchez last Saturday, but the British fighter will still be paid as if he won. UFC.com reports that UFC president Dana White has decided to give Pearson the $30,000 he would have earned if he'd been given the decision win instead of Sanchez
UFC fighter contracts are often structured so that they earn "show" money for simply fighting. If they win, however, they are often awarded "win" bonuses, usually doubling their "show" money.
Sanchez won a split decision over Pearson in his home town of Albuquerque after being completely nullified for three rounds. One judge scored the fight 30-27 for Sanchez, meaning that he scored the second stanza - during which Pearson cut Sanchez on the face with strikes, dropped him with a punch and took him down with a sweep - for Sanchez.
"Diego lost that fight," White reasoned.
"The judge who judged that fight should never be judging fights again. He never should be judging fights of this caliber, he needs to go back down into the amateurs and really learn how to judge a fight... First of all, you gave every round to Diego, who got dropped in the second round. It was a knockdown, how does Diego win that round? It's not possible. I don't know how you can vote against him, but it goes to show that you're never safe. That's as bad as it gets."
Pearson has also appealed to the New Mexico athletic commission to overturn the inexplicable decision. Are you happy that Pearson will at least not miss out on his win bonus?

Rory MacDonald impresses with win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 174
Rory MacDonald is known almost as much for his stoic, monotone demeanor and manner of speaking as he is for his fighting skills but after dominating Tyron Woodley at UFC 174 in his home town of Vancouver, "Ares" was smiling and elated. "It's amazing," he told interviewer Joe Rogan after scores of 30-27, all-around, were announced in his favor.
The 24 year old contender had good reason to smile. Woodley was as feared as anyone in the division coming into the fight against MacDonald, having violently stopped his last two opponents inside the distance, but the young Canadian neutralized the St. Louis wrestler's game for three rounds straight.
Woodley came on strong early on with punches, knees and take down attempts but MacDonald managed to deftly defend just about everything thrown his way. After that, Woodley seemed to be out of ideas for most of the rest of the fight, allowing himself to be backed against the cage and simply react to MacDonald's offense.
For his part, the Georges St. Pierre protege mounted a tactical but aggressive attack, pumping a jab to the head and gut of Woodley and throwing effective multi-punch combos for two rounds. In the third, MacDonald scored his own take down and put a hurting on Woodley with strikes.
Woodley lasted until the final horn and fought hard the whole way, but it was clear at the end who deserves the next shot at the UFC's welterweight title, after the winner of Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown's bout next month.
"I think I'm ready," MacDonald said of a potential title bout.
"The belt will be mine."
Only time will tell if MacDonald will wait for a title shot from the sidelines or if he may fight once more before possibly getting a crack at the world title he covets.

6/13 MORNING UPDATE: White says Bellator didn't hit 100K PPV buys; Dillashaw open to Barao rematch or Assuncao rematch next; episode 4 of "UFC 174 Embedded"; Woodley-MacDonald poll results
| |
FRIDAY 6/13 MORNING UPDATE
If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site this morning:
-Dana White disputed the reported number for Bellator 120, saying it didn't do 100,000 buys. He claims to know what it actually did, and that it wasn't that high. He also says the UFC going head to head with them in the same state on Sept. 5 is coincidental, and that he doesn't care at all about Bellator and what they're doing. See his comments with further analysis in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-UFC Bantamweight Champion T.J. Dillashaw talked this week about both Renan Barao and Raphael Assuncao as potential challengers. With Barao's winning streak into their fight, Dillashaw thinks he would be a fine choice for his next fight despite how one sided the win was, and he thinks he beat Assuncao in their first fight so he wants that rematch as well. Catch his comments with further thoughts in the main listing.
-A new episode of “UFC 174 Embedded” is up, with a look at EA UFC, and several guys at the open workouts. Check it out in the main listing.
-Our morning poll today asked for predictions on the Rory MacDonald vs. Tyron Woodley fight at UFC 174. Woodley via TKO is the top response right now, with 46% of the vote. MacDonald by decision is next at 28%, and both are sensible predictions. It might wind up being one or the other, though a Woodley decision is up there as well. Get your votes in now.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

UFC champion Jon Jones and his newfound power
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is emerging as one of the very biggest stars in MMA history. The youngest UFC champion ever has been (mostly) dominant in the cage, has his own Nike sneaker and graces the covers of major magazines.
All those things are parts of Jones’ stardom that his promoter, the UFC, likely appreciates because they gain from them as well. Of course, the most significant component of stardom to a rising athlete and fighter is power in the form of control.
It’s that portion of Jones’ stardom that the UFC does not appear to be enamored with, at present.
For decades, there have been items that many boxing champs have exercised increased control over as their own stars rise. Power to demand higher wages, control over fight venues, fight dates and, to a degree, fight opponents, for example.
Such power and control has thus far been rare in MMA fighters, however. The sport is young and controlled by one major promoter – the UFC.
Plenty other promotions have tried to challenge the UFC. For years, the Japanese Pride organization was top-dog in MMA, until the UFC’s parent company bought the promotion once it began to struggle.
The UFC also faced competition from the likes of EliteXC (who had a network television deal years before the UFC got their own), Affliction, the IFL (which was publicly traded on Wall Street) and Strikeforce. The UFC did and does the work of MMA promotion much better than anyone else and ended up wiping everyone else out in some form or another.
Sure, the UFC still faces competition from organizations like Bellator, who struck a deal with former UFC partner Viacom, but the Nevada-based promotion still reigns supreme in MMA. All that is to say, for most MMA fighters, the UFC is the place to be.
UFC Champion Jon Jones responding to criticism on Twitter about his not yet signing to rematch Alexander Gustafsson:
Let's make the distinction between bad business and bad press
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) May 30, 2014 Only champions of the UFC are truly recognized as “world” champions and the promotion, by in large, pays better than other organizations.
In exchange for the money, stage and recognition that the UFC has offered its fighters, it has mostly gotten back near complete compliance from most of its athletes on most major issues. Fighters often step up to fight on short notice, sometimes with little regard for weight class, when the UFC asks.
Oftentimes, contract extensions (for the most part, binding on the fighter side much more so than on the promoter side) are usually sought after by UFC fighters to get some illusion of job security and are treated as an afterthought for champions. Fighters in the UFC fight whom, when and where the promotion wants them to, with relatively few exceptions.
For fans, this makes for great content. The UFC is able to put together sought-after matchups that many boxing promoters could only dream of because of conflicting promoter, television and casino deals.
One such dream matchup is a rematch between Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. The Swede contender pushed Jones to the brink last September in possibly the greatest UFC title fight in history.
The fight was incredibly difficult to score, included immeasurable drama, had many questioning the judges’ decision and everyone clamoring for more. Everyone, it seemed, except for Jones himself.
The UFC rightly pushed for an immediate rematch between Gustafsson and Jones. The champion, however, showed little interest in the fight and instead chose to take on Glover Teixiera.
That right there was a relative anomaly in the UFC – even promotional champions have historically deferred to the organization’s matchmakers. Jones went even further than dictating who he would fight next, however, by deciding when he would fight him.
The UFC and its president Dana White appeared completely unprepared for (and increasingly irritated at) Jones to not accept the first date they proposed. Instead, the champion chose to push back the date a bit from what the UFC wanted.
The UFC, so used to having fighters go along with their plans, announced plans for the Jones vs. Teixeira to take place on dates before the champion had evidently even agreed to a time. As a result, the UFC had to shuffle things around a couple times to accommodate Jones.
And now Jones is flummoxing White and the UFC once more. After Jones took out Teixeira and Gustafsson won a fight against Jimi Manuwa, everyone once more agreed that it was time for the champ and the Swedish contender to rematch.
The UFC went ahead and announced their plans to book the fight for August, Gustafsson signed on and the MMA world looked ahead to what we all assume will be an epic second battle. Once more, however, the UFC got ahead of its champion and is now paying for it.
Having learned their lesson the hard way in the past when sitting-champions defended their belts on the last fights of a contract and then walked away from the promotion, the UFC now makes sure that champions have more than one fight left on their contract before having them defend their belt. So, the UFC is in negotiations with Jones’ management to extend his contract and to sign to fight Gustafsson.
Assuming that Jones would go along with whatever they wanted, the UFC of course did not bother to first come to terms on an extension and bout agreement with Jones before announcing their plans to have him rematch Gustafsson in August. Now, Dana White is once again aggravated at Jones and putting pressure on the champ, through PR means, to sign their contract.
Despite the fact that Jones has been perhaps the most active top contender and champion the UFC has ever had (fighting on short notice, fighting former friends, fighting with injuries, fighting quite often, etc.) one of White’s favorite pasttimes in the past two years is to vilify Bones and his team. When Dan Henderson injured himself shortly before a scheduled title bout against Jones at UFC 151 and withheld the information in hopes of still competing, and then eventually dropped out of the fight, the UFC expected Jones to change opponents and fight Henderson’s friend and teammate Chael Sonnen.
When he refused to fight Sonnen on such short notice, White deflected attention from the fact that – without Jones in the main event – the card was too weak to make money by blaming the champion for the UFC's decision to cancel the event. Jones would go on to easily beat Sonnen at a later event, on his own time.
Now, White is once more trying to deflect attention away from the promotion not doing its due diligence and signing fighters to fight before they announce plans for them to fight by putting the spotlight on Jones and faulting him for a supposed delay in the Gustafsson rematch being inked.
Speaking to media in Berlin this past weekend about Jones not having yet signed to fight Gustafsson again, White said, "I don't like it. I don't like it at all."
We're sure he does not. Jones himself has also made it clear through comments to fans on Twitter that he doesn't appreciate the UFC effectively announcing fights and dates for him before he's agreed to them.
Who knows what Jones and his management are specifically asking for in order to extend his contract with the UFC and to fight his toughest opponent to date once more? We do know, however, that the champ fought just five weeks ago.
Perhaps he doesn’t want to jump right back into an arduous training camp in order to fight again as soon as August. Perhaps Jones and his management realize that the UFC made tactical negotiation errors in so publicly declaring their desire – Jones fighting Gustafsson in August – right before heading into contract negotiations and are (gasp) trying to use that as leverage to get better terms for themselves.
At the end of the day, it’s the responsibility of the promoter to make the fights happen. If a promoter wants a professional fighter to fight somebody, they have to pay him or her to fight.
With Jon Jones, the UFC seems to simply be stuck in negotiations with less leverage and less fighter complicity than they are used to. Clearly, Jones isn’t afraid to fight Gustafsson - he’s already done it once before.
It’s also clear that Jones isn’t too eager to rematch the Swede. If the UFC wants him to, then, they’ll likely just have to pay him a lot more to do it.
Sounds about right.

6/12 MORNING UPDATE: Bellator announces "World Title Shot Pool" for former tourney winners; High comments on reactions from UFC on he and Sonnen; fights set for UFC in Maine; Sonnen poll results
| |
THURSDAY 6/12 MORNING UPDATE
-Bellator has announced a big shift to their title shot procedure. Once a fighter wins a tournament, they're then a part of Bellator's “World Title Shot Pool,” which means they won't necessarily have to go through another tournament in order to get another title fight. Instead, some may only need to pick up another win or two in order to move into contention. It's a smart loosening of their own self-imposed rules, which allows them to make some of the matchmaking moves they've already been making without the hypocrisy some of those moves made. See more on the situation with quotes from Bjorn Rebney and further analysis in the main listing at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.
-Following his UFC release, Jason High kind of summed up the ridiculous difference in the reactions UFC gave his situation at UFC Fight Night 42, and that given to Chael Sonnen for a failed drug test this week. In a post on Twitter, High simply wrote “Push steroids, not referees #noted”. Further thoughts in the main listing.
-The UFC's first trip to Maine this August has its first two fights, as Tim Boetsch will take on Brad Tavares, while Shawn Jordan will meet Jack May. More info on those fighters in the main listing.
-Our morning poll asked readers whether or not they expect Chael Sonnen to actually stay retired after his announcement on Wednesday. Perhaps surprisingly, 54% think he's done for good because he says he needs to keep using those therapies for his health; 22% think he'll be back by next year, while 24% think it depends on what happens with the Nevada Athletic Commission.
We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. Coker Wants To See Melendez Vs. Alvarez
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker spoke about current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez and who fans can expect to see him defend the title against next last week:<Br><Br>
"With Gilbert, we're going to take a look at what Pat Healy does next. We don't know who he's fighting next (it's Hirota now) but we're going to definitely put him in there with someone tough to see how he does. By the time Gilbert fights again, either we're going to sign somebody to come in and fight him or we're going to take another look at Pat and see if he's the right guy."<br><Br>
Coker was also questioned about the possibility of bringing in Eddie Alvarez who will be a free agent in the coming months:<Br><Br>
"Come on over to Strikeforce, (Eddie Alvarez), let's do the Melendez fight. That would be fantastic. I think that he's a guy who is extremely talented that we would love to have in Strikeforce to fight Gilbert. It would be great. ... If he is a free agent and he is really free of any contractual relations, make the call. Eddie, come on down, let's put the Melendez fight together."<Br><Br>
