Smith and Simeon collect valuable points in Australia

Bradley Smith Phillip Island 2012

The Tech 3 Racing Team ended a gruelling three-week world tour on a positive note after Bradley Smith and Xavier Simeon claimed hard fought top 15 finishes in sunny but cool conditions in the AirAsia Australian Moto2 Grand Prix this afternoon.

Smith kept himself firmly in the hunt for a top six finish in the final World Championship rankings after he guided his Mistral 610 machine to a determined 12th place at the jaw-dropping Phillip Island track.

In front a packed crowd of over 53,000 fans, the 21-year-old was engaged in an exciting figh t with Jordi Torres that went right down to the wire, the Spaniard fending off Smith's relentless offensive to secure 11th by just 0.045s.

Smith now heads to the final round of the 2012 campaign at the Valencia track in Spain still in with a shout of sixth place in the final Championship standings, with the gap to Mika Kallio in sixth reduced to 11-points.

Simeon delivered an equally determined ride to secure his sixth top 15 finish of the season. The Belgian rider slowly built up his confidence after a tumble in this morning's warm-up session and once he found a confident rhythm he was able to keep the battle between Smith and Torres right in his sights.

With top 15 finishes in two out of the last three races, Simeon is now looking forward to ending his time with the Tech 3 Racing Team with a strong performance in the season's final race in Valencia.

Bradley Smith 12th – 108 points:
“That was a tough race and really hard work to finish in the points today. We have experimented with the set-up of the bike a lot all weekend and while we never really got it to where I was completely comfortable and confident, the bike felt good in the race and the Tech 3 Racing Team did another great job. The main issue was a lack of rear grip and that was our problem all weekend. We've got plenty of data to analyse and work on improving in that area for the last race in Valencia, where I'm determined to finish my time in Moto2 with a strong result. With Kallio not finishing as well I still have a chance to finish sixth in the championship. It will be difficult but it definitely gives us a bit more motivation to take into the last race.&rd quo;

Xavier Simeon 14th – 21 points:
“I made a very good start and I recovered some places but this morning's crash at Turn 10 meant I lost some confidence and I wasn't very strong in that part of the track. I lost a few places and I didn't have the best feeling with the front tyre, so it was difficult to push harder with any confidence. I didn't want to make a mistake and I could easily stay in the group so at one stage I was thinking I might be able to fight with Bradley and Torres. But with about six laps to go I encountered a chatter issue with the front tyre and I had to slow down quite a bit and lost my rhythm. It is a shame because I was looking forward to battling with Bradley and Torres right to the end of the race. At least I scored more points and I'm looking forward to the last round in Valencia to finish with a positive result for the Tech 3 Racing Team.”

Herve Poncharal – Team Manager:
“It wasn't an easy weekend for the Tech 3 Racing Team, so to head home with both Bradley and Xavier inside the points is a satisfying way to end this long spell in the Championship. The Moto2 grid didn't have the best weather conditions all weekend, so I think we prepared the best we could and Bradley and Xavier got the maximum potential out of the Mistral 610 machine. Bradley's pace in the second half of the race was fast and constant and I think he would have been in the group battling for fourth if he had a little bit more confidence in the beginning. Xavier had a crash this morning that dented his confidence a little bit but he recovered well and it was a pity he wasn't closer to the fight with Bradley and Torres to try and get a few more points. Both of them rode with a lot of determination and they never gave up, so we can go to the final race in Valencia hoping they will be inside the points again, but hopefully much higher up the rankings.”

Valentino Rossi On Ducati: "Biggest Frustration Is Having Same Problems We Had At Valencia 2010 Test"

Valentino Rossi spoke on Sunday of the frustration he has suffered over the past two years with Ducati. After two years with the iconic Italian factory, the gap to the front runners remains the same, and the problems Rossi noted at the first test in Valencia 2010 are still there. Now, he told the press, his focus is on riding the Yamaha M1 again, to assess just what the damage of his two years at Ducati has been. Whether any of the riders heading to Ducati for 2013 would be able to master the Ducati was still open, Rossi said.

The Italian was philosophical after the race at Phillip Island, having finished a mediocre seventh, some 37 seconds behind the winner at a track where Rossi once won five years in a row. He brushed off the question of whether the result was a bad one or not with a quip. "I expected more! Yesterday, I was 2 seconds behind, 2 seconds for 27 laps, I expect 54 seconds! So was a good race," Rossi joked.

Rossi's previous record at Phillip Island was outstanding, but even after two years on the bike, Rossi said, he still failed to understand how come Casey Stoner was so successful on the Ducati where everyone else failed. "Casey was the only one rider who could be fast with the Ducati," Rossi told reporters. "All the other guys that tried have destroyed, not his career but his mind... So congratulations to Casey. But two years ago, I still don't understand why there is this difference between Stoner and the other Ducati riders, and after two years that I ride the Ducati I still don't understand." Rossi did not believe his time on the Ducati had caused him the same problems, however. When asked if the experience had, in his own words, destroyed his mind, Rossi replied "I don't think so. Especially because I have another chance."

Stoner still untouchable in final session

Share

Casey Stoner continued his absolute dominance of his home MotoGP weekend with another astonishing performance in final practice at Phillip Island. The Honda rider again shrugged off the ankle injury that has limited his recent form and produced a string of ever-faster laps at the head of the field.

Kats Nakasuga To Replace Ben Spies At Valencia

Katsuyuki Nakasuga is to replace Ben Spies in the factory Yamaha team for the final race of the season at Valencia. Spies, who had to undergo surgery on the shoulder he damaged in the race crash in Sepang, has been ruled out of the rest of the season. The race at Phillip Island had come at too short notice for Yamaha to find a substitute for the injured Spies, but the Valencia race allowed them to secure the services of Nakasuga.

The choice of Nakasuga is a safe and very conservative one, but it was always the most probable outcome. Nakasuga is Yamaha's MotoGP test rider, and would have been on hand in Valencia anyway. Nakasuga made an appearance at Motegi this year, where he finished a creditable 9th. Fans had been lobbying for either AMA champion Josh Hayes or former BSB champion Tommy Hill to take the ride. Hayes, in particular, had proven his worth with an impressive outing as a replacement for Colin Edwards at Tech 3 in Valencia last year.

Randy De Puniet Inside Top Ten Day One Australia

Randy De Puniet Phillip Island 2012

The penultimate round of the MotoGP World Championship got underway in Australia today in the absence of the injured Yonny Hernández, replaced by local rider Kris McLaren, and Ben Spies. Casey Stoner came into his home round with injury worries of his own but he showed no signs of discomfort with his badly damaged right ankle as he proved once again that he is the king of Phillip Island, as the local advertising campaign suggests. The Australian may have a weak ankle but he dominated today's proceedings with an iron fist, leaving Dani Pedrosa trailing by 0.8 seconds and Jorge Lorenzo even further adrift, as he aims for his sixth successive victory in his home Grand Prix.

After the tribulations of the last two rounds Randy De Puniet was finally smiling again today as he recovered his feeling with the POWER ELECTRONICS Aspar ART machine. The Frenchman set a strong pace from the outset today and then dropped his times significantly in the afternoon to record and impressive 1'32.674, the tenth fastest time of the day. His team-mate Aleix Espargaró was not as comfortable, meanwhile, and despite being the second fastest CRT on track he was unable to improve his fastest lap (1'33.727) from the morning to the afternoon and he is hoping to make big steps tomorrow.

10th Randy De Puniet 1.32.674 (39 laps):
“I am happy because I have had a good feeling all day today. I went six tenths quicker this afternoon than this morning and managed to gap my team-mate Aleix by a second for the top CRT spot. We have really struggled for a set-up in the last couple of races so we have to be happy to start off a GP like this. I feel strong and I plan to keep going like this for the rest of the weekend. It will be difficult to make up a ten-point gap to Aleix in the championship in just two races but we're going to try. Taking Stoner out of the equation we are close to the top guys and this is not an easy track.”

13th Aleix Espargaró 1.33.727 (31 laps):
“I really struggled to get a feeling today. I could feel something wasn't right with the front wheel this morning and I didn't feel comfortable. The same issues carried over to the afternoon and we tried a different gearbox that I didn't like so the performance was the exact opposite to what we were hoping for. We also had an electrical fault that brought the session to an early end but there is no need to panic – today was the day to try these things so now it is time to analyse everything and try to improve tomorrow.”
